Seems could be wise to skip raw dairy products, for a while at least, and for dairies to sterilize the milking machines between cows. I wonder if supplements that are made from raw dairy of things like lactoferrin which are not present in pasteurized dairy could be affected. Interesting.
Osterholm also recommends avoiding raw milk and raw milk cheeses.
@@kathysharp7551 Because I was wondering about the efficacy of pasteurization on viruses, I found the FDA reporting, "Data from previous studies ... that serve as the underpinnings of the FDA’s current milk supply safety assessment show that pasteurization is very likely to effectively inactivate heat-sensitive viruses, like H5N1, in milk from cows and other species."
Dr. Barb Petersen, Texas veterinarian first reported bird flu in cows in early March.
" At the same time, on almost every farm with sick animals, Petersen said she saw sick people, too.
“We were actively checking on humans,” Petersen said. “I had people who never missed work, miss work.”
Petersen said some workers had symptoms consistent with flu: fever and body aches, stuffy nose or congestion. Some had conjunctivitis, the eye inflammation detected in the Texas dairy worker diagnosed with bird flu.
Dr. Gregory Gray, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, has been taking samples from livestock and people on two Texas farms. On farms with confirmed cattle infections, there have also been reports of mild illnesses among the workers, he said."
Thanks for checking out the video and for sharing! The reports we found said they had tested dozens of these workers for the virus causing infection in the cows and only the single person tested positive. Hopefully it will remain that way, but certainly something to keep a really close eye on!
Actually most Farm Workers are undocumented illegal from Mexico and Central America . And they are not getting tested.
"The reluctance of workers and farmers to allow testing is “greatly hampering” understanding of how the virus spreads, how large the outbreak is now and how quickly it may grow, Gray said."

When I go to that CDC wastewater site, the way I read it is that only 1% (3 sites) were greater than or equal to 80%. That’s far less than what you reported in this video.
You are absolutely correct. We definitely misspoke there. Really appreciate keeping us honest and for pointing this out. 1% met the 80th percentile whereas 230 sites had data that met criteria. Thanks again and apologies for the error!

I stopped taking flu vaccine 2 years ago. Feel fine
Often it is better to be lucky than good. I ignored flu vaccines until early 2000 when a particularly nasty Type A strain made its way through at least the American West. It turned out to be very contagious and extraordinarily intense. For three days I sat in a living room chair, huddled in a heavy coat and rarely becoming conscious. My wife kept a water glass filled beside me so when I "came to" I drank, knowing what would happen if I didn't. When awake I was delirious. When it was over, I had two permanent changes to my sense of taste: artichokes - which I liked before - tasted fantastic, and cilantro - which I never noticed before - tasted like soap.
If we can avoid infection from others we don't need vaccination. Otherwise, we can take our chances. I recently took the second dose (2 of 2) of the shingles vaccine. I had a shingles outbreak once so I know the virus is definitely in me, and I had the first of the two doses earlier so I knew how rough the reaction is, but since shingles can lead to blindness (following weeks of horrible eye pain) or other unwanted long term effects, I toughed it out.

If a bird gets sick and drops dead on some hay, the cow could stick it's nose on it.
A live bird could poop on the cow or in the pasture.
It's not hard to think of ways that cattle and birds interact.
I would like to know if the health of the cattle before being infected, what their diet was like.
They might have been sickly with a Standard American Cow Diet.

No, what you said has a ring of truth b/c I do recall back in the 90's that the UK was talking a lot about "mad cow"
and it was said at that time that the animals were being fed at least in part by horse & cow products that we put
into their food stuffs. Another thought that caught my attention was I had read/heard about Plum Island was to
be relocated into the mid section of the United States which was in the heart of the livestock industry. I found
this to be alarming for a number of reasons & while "Bird Flu" was not on my radar it would fit right in with all
those who were sounding the alarms over the works of Plum Island being moved into the center of the US?

Thank you, Doctor. What about the human to human cases of MERS in Saudi Arabia? WHO made it seem like it's nothing to be concerned about on their website, but is it?
In the current social atmosphere, it is probably best not to stir up social media about something that may not even make it on the radar. That said, MERS is worth the concern in the worldwide pathogen watch.
Cattle Egrets, could play heavily with consistent proximity to pastured cattle. Consider outbreaks relative to these birds.

What's the current impact to infected cattle? Do the animals just appear sick for a while and then recover, or does it have a high mortality rate? I'm aware that the mortality rate is very high in infected birds (chickens etc.).
So in the worst case scenario, H5N1+Omicron(JN.1.7 or KP.2), might lead to about 50% of death rate?
That appears to be 50% off cases that were so serious that people went to the doctor or the emergency room. But as with most infections, the vast majority never get sick enough to seek medical care. So, that 50% might actually only be a small percentage or fraction of a percentage among those who get infected. We simply don't know because we don't have full data.
@@MarmaladeINFP My point is that H5N1 has a 50% fatality rate but cannot transmit from person to person; Omicron, on the other hand, has strong person-to-person transmission characteristics but a low fatality rate. So, if someone were to be infected with both viruses, is it possible for their body to produce a new virus with a 50% fatality rate and easy person-to-person transmission?
Worried it's in cows also because cows are sometimes in farms that also have pigs. And, once it gets into pigs,it is way more likely to mutate to transmit human to human. I may not be using the correct science words here, but basically that is because pigs have both the animal(or bird?) and the human receptors. That's the gist anyway. It's described in Dr. Greger's book How to Survive a Pandemic. And, a fairly recent Osterholm podcast.
We don't know if there has only been one positive or if it has gone human to human because people can't be compelled to test. The family of the man who was infected refused testing. It has been observed that there have been many workers on farms with symptoms buy they wont test.
This is interesting. Let us know if you have a source on this. It would seem that if there was human-to-human spread we would be seeing a lot more symptomatic folks
