That was cool seeing that American Character spot that opened this video. American Character made some long forgotten licensed action figures and other stuff way back when, including Bonanza figures of all four Cartwrights, plus a Honey West doll, some Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Girl from U.N.C.L.E. stuff, plus other things that were really cool back in the '60s.

Love to watch commercials from my childhood. But I didn't like the sexism in a few commercials at that time. Another thing that used to annoy me, even when I was only 10, were the toy commercials that segregated boys and girls. Boys were supposed to fight and be violent and girls were supposed to look forward to motherhood. How I hated those cutesy commercials for those hard plastic baby dolls, starting with Betsy Wetsy! But the Tressy commercial was cool, because I remember a friend my age who loved her Tressy set. After high school graduation, she studied cosmetology and became a successful beautician. She did a great job on my perm!

I was also 8 in 1965. Ads could be longer, compared to the extremely short attention spans of 2024. You generally knew where you stood as far as gender roles - GI Joe for the boys, Easy-Bake Oven for the girls, and Snickers and Cheerios for everybody! The advertisers and agencies knew exactly what we wanted and hoped for. After Reaganomics set in, the entire landscape transformed--kids' toys and games were advertised primarily on the cable networks such as Nickelodeon. The only thing that was more or less the same was that MUSIC played at least as big a part, if not bigger, in luring people to buy a product. But America lost its sense of humor with the decade of the 1980s. Instead of "Get this! Buy this BECAUSE......" it was "More, more, better ,better, right now." Only the local and regional ads were able to recapture the humorous quality of the 50s and 60s, with a lot more leeway as to what to say and show.
