We use a little mnemonic to remember the "events" occurring on the transverse thoracic plane/sternal angle (T4/T5) and thought I'll share it with you: "RATPLANT"
R = Rib = articulation of 2nd rib's costal cartilage to the sternum
A = Aorta = arch of aorta starts and ends
T = Trachea = Bifurcation of the trachea
P = Pulmonary trunk = Bifurcation of the pulmonary trunk
L = Ligamentum arteriosum = Present between aortic arch and L. pulmonary artery
A = Azygos vein = Azygos v. draining into SVC
N = Nerve, i.e. L. recurrent laryngeal n. = hooking/looping around arch of aorta
T = Thoracic duct = crossing from right to left
