Captive sunfish were shown to adapt really well and trust the humans caring for it in a day. If it were truly stupid it wouldn't have been able to adapt that fast. They have many mutualistic relationships with various fish and seabirds, having the fish clean them from parasites. The fish/birds that clean them get a meal and the sunfish is cleared of any parasites on its skin. It's a win-win, and the fact that sunfish manipulate this is another indicator that they are not stupid. They're pretty smart for utilizing it. They may potentially be used to keep track of jellyfish blooms too, as they are often seen when jellyfish are abundant in the area, as jellyfish are their main food source.
