  • Unfortunately, the ‘SS UNITED STATES’ has been evicted from Pier 82 In Philadelphia.
A number of options are being considered, including possibly reefing the ship. A far better alternative to scrapping. The ship as a reef, after extensive remediation, would provide marine habitat for decades and decades, in addition to attracting scuba divers.
As a reef attraction, there would be positive economic impact to the area that would also last for decades. Those impacts thru recreational Sportfishing and scuba diving include marinas, restaurants, tackle stores, dive charter operations, hotels, among others.

@briannv9900 I was invited on by a friend who promoted the ship when it was owned by the late Edward Cantor.

Living in the Philadelphia area I have had the opportunity to watch this ship crumble over the years. It has been horribly mismanaged by opportunists chasing nonsense schemes. It should have joined the ranks of the Olympia and Battleship NJ just 2 miles away as a museum ship. The total bs about insurance and homeland security prohibiting tours is maddening.
I am horrified at the condition of the hull.

Unfortunately, there are some real safety concerns as you move thru the ship. These include broken railings, loose and missing grates and tripping hazards, poor lighting, among other things.
The location of the ship does require going into a controlled area and we had to supply proper ID, prior to being authorized and escorted into and out of the area..

I can only pray she be spared, and somehow given another opportunity to be a museum or ride the oceans waves once again. Thank you for your post.

      Thank you.
Reefing is probably the best case scenario at this point…

Or think of it as a new chapter in the ships history. One that will foster enormous amounts of marine life, as a nursery, for decades.

The conservancy squandered all the money over the years and stripping her of absolutely everything of value and not even painting the exterior hasn't helped her any.shes headed to be a reef or scrap metal.

That's why she was so gutted, because they removed all the asbestos.
