I been watching Dapper Dan interviews all weekend and each one I learned something different.--74 years young and father born in 1898 slavery ended in 1865!! wow
Actually he isn't. Kanye is saying that he wants his own brand. He is building someone else brand. Kanye is saying that as long as you keep trying to be their partner , you don't get the leverage to have your own. He sold out. His deal is what they have been doing for years. Jordan, Phat farm, Sean John, Rockawear and many others. It doesn't change anything. He sold out. I don't blame him , he's old and wants some recognition , but his deal is not going to lead to anything new because he doesn't own Gucci and anything he makes now, they own. Dapper Dan is a walking history book. He also articulated and explained what Kanye couldn't. Global distribution is what a black luxury brand needs to be successful like Chanel, Gucci, or Louis Vutton.

It is a shame that it took him 50yrs to finally get credit in the fashion game!! He was doing this in his 20's making hit fashion while you were listening to hit records in hip-hop!! He is 74 yrs of age and was before Karl Kani,Sean John,Fubu,Cross Colors!! He is getting his fame now because of his partnership with Gucci,so Gucci is on the band wagon just like everyone else who did not know of Dapper Dan!! Listen to most lyrics in the late 80's and you will hear most artist rapping about him and giving shout outs to him...
Dapper Dan definitely a Legend! Hooped w/Bill when he came to Houston. After the games he sat on the floor of the court and chopped game with everybody, just like one of the fellas. Regular good people he is.
In all fairness didn't Kanye break this same concept down to Sway when he had that viral outburst??? It just sounds more classy when Dapper Dan says the same thing...
HOW you convey a thought actually matters just as much as WHAT you mean. Kanye may have had a good idea to share (which is debatable but let's accept it) but how did he convey his thoughts? He rambled like an idiot and yelled and disrespected Sway and acted like the immature spoiled brat he is, even today, while Dapper Dap actually spoke gracefully, politely and with intelligence. That's child vs adult. That's the difference. And it's a world of a difference.
People hated Jay-Z when he was in the exact same place as Dapper Dan currently is but they won't understand till later. Remember when Jay-Z was moving with labels and working closely with a lot of industry people, they all said he sold out but little did they know he was learning how the shit works to build his own thing and have absolute control of how he moves. Rocafella wasn't a label label in terms of structure and longevity like Roc Nation but Jay knew he'd need to learn how distribution, marketing, building a machine, the thorough business behind universal type companies etc... works. Now you see he's put himself in a strong position to do as he pleases and give back without the threat of being shut out. He's gotten too big for the industry to simply shut him out, it will take a lot of work. Dapper is in the same predicament, he needs to learn how these high end fashion houses work, the ins and outs because there's a difference between a clothing line, fashion line and fashion house company (which he's trying to build and compete with heritage brands). Hopefully he can retain that vision and come out the other side ready to build that fashion house company that will be on the level of Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Burberry, Hermes but first he needs to get his foot in the door which he has and now only time will tell. If he's successful that door will be open for more of us to get into the industry and be on that level. #Legend.
Wrong! Jay Z doesn't own one company! He is still doing 50/50 splits. Even the 40/40 club! Rock Nation is a 50/50 split with Live Nation and he only owns 25%. I can't explain all of business on this thread so please do your homework but Rock Nation is a LLC. That's not a large company , the next level up is Corp./Inc. Don't believe what you hear , don't even take my word , do the research. So if you don't own a company outright , you are not the boss. Even if you own 50% and the other party has 50 , if they have more money they can sell stock and water down your percentage. So he is not in a better place than someone who owns the whole thing. He has to answer to the partner because they are basically the boss. Jay Z is all hype. I like him BTW , but I can see what others that don't understand business deals can't. Watch him sell off Rock Nation to Live Nation. That's why they gave him the deal from the beginning. To use him to get everyone to sign up and then sell them off. They had to do something because rappers were using the internet to bypass record companies. So live Nation has bought up the large venues already and so next part will be , if you want to perform in a large venue , you have to sign with them. When you understand business , you can see the moves being made.
I think Dapper Dan is saying that all these designers we sought after cant really sew or design patterns he made hotter garments than a socalled high fashion house !
