Another great video Nick! Loved the reaction as soon as you started to pedal. Always appreciate the honest first looks and reviews. Glad to see you were on the skipjacks as well! They look quite energetic.
I have noticed everything you said, primarily the hull slap and storage. I have a Predator for myself and the Ocean Kayak Malibu(same as Salty) for my wife/kids. I sometimes use the OK myself on short trips that I just want to travel light and get to my spots fast. The speed can't be overstated. My Predator leaves 2019/2020 Outbacks in the dust, but the Malibu/Salty makes the Predator feel slow.
I feel like this was a miss step on Old Town. The hull is BTB but the length is all purpose. BTB needs a long boat with a high sharp bow. They designed the bow correctly but shortened the boat, there is no where to store fish. Its length and drive makes it good for inshore, but the bow kills it for shallow water. I think this boat is for open bays, 2-3+ ft depth, trolling basically the same thing all their other boats are good at just a tad cheaper. I feel like there is no reason to really buy this boat and that it could have been cheaper. I would recommend a topwater 120 pdl. If they were trying to achieve a more budget friendly option, I think it should have been $1599. There is only a $300 difference between the salty and the topwater.
Completely agree with you. I think they missed the mark on this one. It really seems as though it has no advantages from the regular 120 pdl. The storage looks like that would be a huge problem as I store lots of things in my Predator pockets, that alone plus the upgrades in gear tracks will put you back in the price range of the regular 120 pdl. The open front hatch seems like a major downgrade too. If their intention was to make a cheaper option completely then the price needs to drop more in my opinion.
I'm interested in the Salty PDL, and am trying to decide between it and the regular Sportsman PDL 120, so I'm curious why you recommend the regular Sportsman PDL 120. For me, it's not about the price, it's about the hull design. I want something that is all-purpose, including the occasional surf launches. As far as I can tell, other than the hull design, the only difference in features between the Salty and the regular Sportsman PDL, is that the Salty doesn't have the front hatch or two side pockets. So I'd be giving up some storage in exchange for a hull that is faster and more capable of being launched in the surf. I don't really hear of anyone doing surf launches in their regular Sportsman PDL 120, because I don't think that hull is really designed for that. I'm new to kayak fishing, so what else am I missing or should I be considering? Thanks.
Omg it’s totally like a little sports car. At least compared to the AutoPilot which would be the Rolls Royce. The Salty has a strong ground though, very affordable and easy to use by yourself. Your cons are pretty spot ON! I really wouldn’t disagree with any of them. 💯
Good to see more content on these, I've got one of these on the way and your vid confirms my thoughts. Feels like it's going to be my perfect bay/inshore/sometimes offshore kayak. The lack on deck storage doesn't bother me too much, I've got spots for all my tools on my PFD, might be a nuisance in keeping lures I've swapped out though. Front well is going to store my c-tug and I'm going to slap a cooler back in the bag (or the other way around). Can't wait to feel the speed 👍
Good first review... and I understand a number of people questioning the cheap label.... but ... considering this was a review of a Pedal Kayak it was an affordable price... compared to lower costing Paddle kayaks , yes it’s expensive.... below 2 grand with pedals and a 12 foot length, drive warranty, hull warranty .....we’re back to affordable.compared to the competitors....I M H O ..... again ...opinion!
Here are some other capable options: Seastream pdl $1399 3yr hull 1 yr drive, pelican hd $1499 lifetime hull 1yr drive, perception pilot $1799 5yr hull 2yr drive, passport 12 $1599 3yr hull. The warranty is really the only thing the salty has going for it imo.
@@BAFMEDIC The only good contender there is the Passport compare to Old Town and it probably doesn't even have instant reverse. The seat on the salty is wayyyy more comfortable than any of those 3 kayaks plus Lifetime on the hull and 5 years on the PDL is unbeatable. And i forgot, is the fastest of all. IMO , the salty features for less than 2K beats all the cheaper options out there
my new auto pilot 120 just like yours shipped today. Cant wait to get it on the 26th. Mariner Sails shipped batteries today. How do you like the Humminbird 7 mega compared to the Lowrance you had? Cool Kayak your in though!!!
Can you compare this to the sportsmen 106 PDL? Can't decide between the two. Satly is faster but sportsmen has more pockets, hatches and is more stable.
Dont insult our intelligence take the word cheap or cheaper I know you are sponsored y old town but a beginner kayak 2k como on man. What if the beginner dont take up the passion for kayack fishing now he will be stuck with a bad taste of the purchase and the sport in general. 🤦♂️
Yeah, I and many others agree with you. His choice of words was very poor. Big difference between cheap and affordable. Notice be doesn't respond to any negative posts right? In his live video he was asked to compare it to the Hobie Compass. His reply was that it wasn't a fair comparison even though they cost about the same. LOL. He doesn't want to say anything that my that might cost him that Old Town free ride.

Just went and looked at an Old Town PDL last weekend. Saving up my pennies now :-) . Great video as always!
Nice! Hopefully my video helped solidify your decision
@@RXAngler is there another model up next to this model I’ve been thinking about getting it
Thank you for your insights on this model. I am torn between the salty and 120 pdl.
I don’t see you going wrong with either model.

My first kayak was ascend 12t which I paid $499 at the time... That was a cheap beginner kayak
A cheap beginners Kayak is a $250 kayak from Wal Mart. This video is about Pedal driven kayaks not fight with a paddle while you fish kayaks
@@jettercool When this video was first uploaded it had 'cheap beginner kayak' on the tittle, hence the comment. You offended?

Old town has scuooer plugs with one way valves to allow water out and not in.
For all Veterans Old town I believe does a 30-35% on 1 kayak per year
Those fish u call skipjack is what I used to tear up those large tarpons down in south Florida and had very good success with
This is the Rx editor I remember .. good video bro
I was very interested in this kayak when It came out. I they had coast this year so I could of came back 😭
I saw a comment here saying that Nick doesn't reply to negative comments. Replying to hate comments is a total waste of time
Nice video!

Cool kayak, set the hook brother
thanks
Hey brother. Take care and be careful worth Marco coming at you
you and I have a very different definition of "cheap" my friend!
It happens when you live on minimum wages or your a cheap person regardless
Nice rig, Hope the price will reflex the pro and cons you mention but the speed is nice.

i really like the humminbird.
We was out there today too first time it was great
Is it worth it it looks awesome kayak
Starting @12:30 what is that background noise while you are talking? Sounds like my mother in law regurgitating...
Nice work!🐟
Can you compare this to the sportsmen 106 PDL? Can't decide between the two. Satly is faster but sportsmen has more pockets, hatches and is more stable.
I wouldn't say it's more stable than the Salty...The Salty is designed for bigger water
Can you tow someone on a “paddle only” kayak if they paddle while you pedal?
I would say yes...saw one on here tow a sinking kayak to shore in rough conditions.
Hey Nick, thinking about picking this yak up. I’m about 230 pounds. With the seat so high up, did it feel stable?
Yes, very stable
Nick, I am 310, you think this would be a stable kayak for me with the seat height? I have no way of demo-ing it, stores are kind of far.
It should be fine but I highly recommend the topwater 120 pdl instead.
what about the stability ?
Where at the San Luis Pass did you launch?
Just curious how do you target spanish mackerel ?
You get what you pay for..............tools are important to a man.............FULL SEND FISHING!!!!!!!
How are people able to preorder this? They are on a back order till October.
Since when us 2k cheap?! Sorry I didn't get those unemployment funds or get it for "free" either. Smh.
2k plus , cheap. Must be nice.
Word. Gotta take out the pedal drive to be under 1k. Then it's just like any other kayak.
@@profanevisions The pedal drive alone is 1K
