  • ULi/Uri is an ancient decorative Art of ndị Igbo. It was an art practiced mostly by women in Precolonial times. It was also a non-verbal communication system used as body art, wall art, clothe designs and moldings.
It is believed that Uli is as old as ndị Igbo as the designs have been found on Igbo-ukwu bronzes dating back to the 9th century.
Uli is derived from the Uli plant whose fruits produces the Uli pigment.
Other items used in decorating the art are :
Charcoal, Clay, tree bark, Camwood, Nzu, red oil etc. There is also the use of aka upa to close up cracks.
To decorate a house, the Uli women decorators work in group to achieve it. They sing folks and also initiate communicative designs.
Uli stands out as one of the most popular and esthetic ancient decorative arts. Although this art could have been totally extinct if not for the few comptemporary artists who still feature it in their paintings.
