I discovered your channel when I was about in 7th grade! I bought all your Mastering Manga books and pre-ordered your illustration book. You are so helpful and inspired me to follow my passion of drawing comics in general. Thanks to you I am now in college studying animation! I thank you so much for your advice.
ooh i like this idea. i really like changing the eyes for expression as well though, like eyes tend to squint if you are mad or upset, widen when they are surprised, etc. :) i love it when you do a disney drawing!!
I literally just told myself "I'm gonna be a musical artist when I grow up" and then I saw your video and realized what I was about to throw away out of my life. Art.
Yay!! I really identify with Rapunzel due to some specific situations in my past, so it was awesome to see this! The tutorial portion, as always, was extremely helpful and appreciated! Thank you, Sir! I'm excited for the new book!! can't wait to receive it! 👍😊
This is exactly what I was wondering lately! (In actuality, I'm always wondering/worried about this.) Thanks for covering this! It may not be the same for what I'm about to suggest as there may need to be tweaks needed for the eyes as well, but I'd like to suggest doing a "gradient" of emotions, so to speak. (Ex: disappointment vs. sadness vs. devastation; content vs. happy vs. elation; etc.)
Unlike most of your fans and followers, I am only just starting to draw in the Manga style. In fact, I only began two weeks ago. I'm not amazing, but the amount of progress I've made is encouraging. And it's only due to lots of time practicing, and (possibly most importantly) your videos, Mr. Crilley. I would greatly appreciate a video on how to draw a male character with curly hair. I don't know if it is just not something Manga artists do, but I can't find any good videos on it. Thank you for all your help!
This was so good and helpful! I am not use to you doing Disney drawings that often. I think you should draw more Disney and marvel characters in the future if you want to.
I've learned soo much from you over the years if I didn't find your channel I wouldn't have my profile picture XD... jokes aside I'm really thankful for your tutorials I've been here since 2010 on and off watching your videos :)
Angriosity! I have so much angriosity! Wait, Mark posted his next video? Never mind! I'm happy now! I would love to see another of these videos! Expressions are hard, yet important. I picked up a lot of great tips. A second video would be awesome! Also, you should make a pencil with a handmade label or something and dedicate it to being 'The Blushie Pencil' and whenever you need to add blushies, you can take out your trusty Blushie Pencil and draw them on!
Could you make a video about putting more emphasis and changes to the eyes? You've used an example with eyes that don't change much, and I'd be interested to see a more eye-focused video about facial expressions if you decide to do so someday. :)
yeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssss more expressions! teach me your ways Crilley sama lol I've learned a lot from you so far, I'm the one who showed you that kissing picture (with Kirito and Asuna) on facebook
I love this video! I think it would be nice to see a video of facial expressions with the head at different perspectives. For instance, in manga they often do the face from slightly above slightly below, etc. For me, anyway, those are kind of hard to get just right!
Mark, I've been watching your videos for a few years now and I can honestly say that you have become my top favorite youtube artist. I've purchased only 1 of your books (Mastering Manga 1) but I plan on buying several other of your books eventually. If I can have 1 request for you to do...could you do some video game character drawings? Keep up the great work Mark, I look forward to your next video.
Maybe they look a little crooked, but because Rapunzel has her head tilted slightly upwards and to the right, the eyes are probably correct. Plus it's in a Disney style so the "realistic features" are rather exaggerated due to the cartoon style.
Spiritless Wolf I'm gonna give you some information that will fuck you up. look at your own face in the mirror, look at your friends, your neighbors, hell any celebrity. almost everyone's eyes (and any facial features) are uneven, some more than others. everyone is at some degree asymetrical, take a picture of your face head on and reverse the image on your phone. you'll see your face is much different when flipped
The first five drawings Crilley made are fine but the last one I thought was a little bit like a Pablo Picasso painting. Perhaps its the empty space the raised eyebrows provide? Still though he's drawing Disney style, not "realism". @Prince Of Wolves and by right eye you mean her left maybe?
This reminds me a lot of the popular "25 expressions" challenge thing that was floating around the internet a while back. Basically, it was a group of 25 boxes labeled with different emotions and you were supposed to draw the same character with all the different emotions, it really helped me. If anybody here hasn't heard of it, it's well worth checking out!
I just recently started watching you and I already you where a pro at this so I decided to buy all your master manga books and will see if i can donate sometime, you are really helpful and helped me learn to draw my own character
Again, huge help. You've stated before about the eyebrows and yet it's only after this that the penny finally dropped for me xD thanks and great video.
This was quite informative! And although I'm hardly good enough to be called amateur, I have found that it really does all come down to the eyebrows! For some reason your confidence in art has really helped me gain confidence in my own, which us something I've really lacked in the past. So I have to say. Thank you. Thank you a lot, although I still don't know if I'm good enough to be called an artist!
I have been struggling with facial expressions ALL WEEK LONG because i'm finally paying attention to emotions in my characters. this really helped. i like to play with the width of the eyes as well though
This was very helpful! I draw cartoons where the characters are birds, so the main way I show emotion is with eyebrows. I have the most trouble with the sly/skeptical/sarcastic look. I would love it if you did another video about eyebrows!
blushy king you taught me so much i started watching you half a year ago, and ive already watched all your videos. ive tremendously improved in art altogether, i just wish that you could sell some of the art equipment you use to draw. all i have is a hb and 2b pencil with a normal rubber and ruler and sharpener.
Hi Mark! I love your videos, you inspire me a lot and because of you my drawing has improved. My dream is to become a manga artist, and I have learnt a lot about it through your videos. I have a really difficult time drawing lips,so could you please consider doing a video on this if you haven't already? Thanks a lot for making these videos and being an awesome guy!
wow, I loved this video Mark also Mark can you please do a video of a anime or manga girl playing a violin if you don't mind. I really like violin. And thanks for the videos that you be posting every Friday that is so awesome of you I be watching all of them, and I love them all they teach me how to put more detail in my drawings. Thank you so much Mark Crilley. Also I love the blushies. #blushies lol.
Again a great video. How would you call that style, Rapunzel is drawn in? I really like how realistic, yet "simple" it looks. I always struggle starting with manga, because it seems a bit too "off" for my taste, but I rarely find books or tutorials on other styles.
Could you also do a side segment that shows us the body expressions that we would use to help accommodate and intensify the facial expressions we're trying to convey. E.g. someone shiverng, or someon who looks betrayed. +MarkCrilley
Many artists understimate just how important the eyebrows are to conveying emotions.

Thank you so much!! I'm honored :)
You're very welcome! :)

You know what's really good to do?
Listening to one of Mark's Q&A videos while you practice drawing. It's super relaxing.
I literally just told myself "I'm gonna be a musical artist when I grow up" and then I saw your video and realized what I was about to throw away out of my life. Art.
I was about to say: "WHAT - no blushies? I'm disappointed..." but then you added them and I am proud
Yay!! I really identify with Rapunzel due to some specific situations in my past, so it was awesome to see this! The tutorial portion, as always, was extremely helpful and appreciated! Thank you, Sir!
I'm excited for the new book!! can't wait to receive it! 👍😊
WIthout blushies it won´t be the same! :D
Great how only eyebrows and both can do such a huge difference
Definitely one of your best videos yet, so helpful. Thanks again mark crilley!!!
Yes please do more of these!!
every time I watch mark crilley's videos...I'm always amazed at what he can create to amaze us
Thank you!
markcrilley OMG...ur welcome •^• I'm so happy u replied
My art class was learning to draw realistic facial features and we used your tutorial. It was so fun!!!!
Happy Birthday Mark! Thanks for all the inspiration and giving us a place to feel good about our art!
I missex rhis channel. I'm ashamed to have forgotten about it, it's great! You taught me most of what I know! Thanks, Mark!
I've preordered as well. Whoop, whoop!!!
Thank you so much!
Gets to Anger
*INTENSIFIES BLUSHIES*
😂😂😂😂😂😂
huge fan of your videos, planning to start reading your books, see your work come to life
I must say that I find the shape you use for the eye is just as important to showing emotions as the eyebrowns are!
This is the second time I've watched this. Really enjoyed it Mark

Extremely useful. Surprisingly easy. Thanks, Mark.

I just bought the Realism Challenge book and can't wait to dive into the lessons. Thanks for your hard work putting these videos together. :)

Can't wait till your new book comes out! :)
thanks I've had a few ideas, hope to see your comics oneday

Great lesson. The reveal in example #3 was wonderful. I've always gotten a lot from your "# of ways to do " videos.
Thank you Larry :)
Back at it again with amazing art and tips. Thanks markcrilly! This helps a lot! 😊
Angriosity! I have so much angriosity! Wait, Mark posted his next video? Never mind! I'm happy now!

perfect timing Mark, because I need to make a comic for class. I could use this very well.

I got Manga Art! So helpful. It inspired me a lot and improved my drawing skills in general. Thank you Mark!

To me the eyes look like they should be in line but I don't know xD
Spiritless Wolf yeah the right one looks to low DX
Maybe they look a little crooked, but because Rapunzel has her head tilted slightly upwards and to the right, the eyes are probably correct. Plus it's in a Disney style so the "realistic features" are rather exaggerated due to the cartoon style.

Andrew Maksym still looks weird tho right?

Yes the asymmetrical smile is important to that look in my opinion! sly surprised more myschevious look)

Mark, could you make a video in where you show how you make a study of another artist style?
I just recently started watching you and I already you where a pro at this so I decided to buy all your master manga books and will see if i can donate sometime, you are really helpful and helped me learn to draw my own character

Your so good at art
If ypu combine the embarrassed eyebrows and the angry mouth, then you allready have a sad face :)
this really helped me. :)
This was very helpful! I draw cartoons where the characters are birds, so the main way I show emotion is with eyebrows. I have the most trouble with the sly/skeptical/sarcastic look. I would love it if you did another video about eyebrows!
wow. Just wow.
Angriosity, haha
sooo interesting!!!!
People say I say ''Uhh'' a lot whenever I narrate. I came to see if you did it too...and you also do it, a lot. Is it something we should avoid?
This was so helpful thanks
blushy king you taught me so much i started watching you half a year ago, and ive already watched all your videos. ive tremendously improved in art altogether, i just wish that you could sell some of the art equipment you use to draw. all i have is a hb and 2b pencil with a normal rubber and ruler and sharpener.
Thank you so much for watching all my vids! ^_^
Nicely done!

Hi Mark! I love your videos, you inspire me a lot and because of you my drawing has improved. My dream is to become a manga artist, and I have learnt a lot about it through your videos. Great video. Helped me a lot. Thank you.

When will ur next Q and A be I have some good questions I really want to ask
great tutorial! are you planning on making another realistic piece any time soon?
wow, I loved this video Mark
also Mark can you please do a video of a anime or manga girl playing a violin if you don't mind. I really like violin. And thanks for the videos that you be posting every Friday that is so awesome of you I be watching all of them, and I love them all they teach me how to put more detail in my drawings. Thank you so much Mark Crilley. Also I love the blushies. #blushies lol.
everything is better with blushies! sad face included
Again a great video. How would you call that style, Rapunzel is drawn in? I really like how realistic, yet "simple" it looks. I always struggle starting with manga, because it seems a bit too "off" for my taste, but I rarely find books or tutorials on other styles.
You're amazing
Can you please make video on doing foreshortening on multiple ways, please?
mark I'm slightly disappointed you didn't change the eye shapes with each expression, eyes change as much as the brows!
Could you also do a side segment that shows us the body expressions that we would use to help accommodate and intensify the facial expressions we're trying to convey. E.g. someone shiverng, or someon who looks betrayed. +MarkCrilley
You could draw randomized blobs and lines and it'd still be better than anything I could ever do.
Rapunzel, is it you? xD
Seriously, thanks for this vid, very useful :D
0:30 "What I've done here is made a drawing of Rapunzel from Tangled…"
