The music of Incubus has and have always been appealing to some who consider themselves outsiders in society, especially the song "Drive." My middle school years were spent taking into their music and inhaling them like candy, figuratively speaking. That was my anthem and still is. Your overall reaction is adorable and priceless. But having control of your ownership can be difficult as a kid, but the journey is worth the time to build the life you want to create for yourself. I'm 35 now and still exploring everything around me through art and music, regarding my mental health journey. I'm grateful for that. That bus metaphor is brilliant, btw. ❤️

I saw Incubus live only once, it was in my hometown here in germany and it was the middle of summer, they played a quite small and it was PACKED, one of the hottest shows i have ever been to, to the extent of sweat dripping from the quite high ceiling, I initially didnt wanna go that day cause during that time i was in a pretty dark corner of my mind myself and wasnt THAT big of a fan of them back then but i went cause a friend just picked me up and i really really enjoyed the show, the atmosphere was just so uplifiting, during the concert it had rained outside, like..... POURED... the parking lot was flooded about half calf height, all the people tried to avoid the water, not to get their shoes wet, not to fall....etc, you know.... my friend who was the driver was like "damn how do we get to the car...." and i just took my shoes and socks off and danced into the flooded parking lot, slowly people started to do the same like "hey... hes right. its just damn water!"
    one of the best concerts.

I've never been super into Incubus but when I took business law back in college my dissertation was on a legal case involving this band. There was another band in America called Incubus (a death metal band) that formed 5 years before this Incubus, and were making and releasing music before this Incubus and just by happenstance of not hearing about the other Incubus, they were both marketing and releasing music in the same country at the same time under the same name. It eventually went to court, and despite the other Incubus being around first it was determined that they did not have a substantial share of the market, so this Incubus won the right to continue marketing and advertising under the name Incubus. The death metal band changed their name to Opprobrium and are still active to this day.

Another great reaction Amanda. Keep up the great work. I never heard this song but it did hit close to home. Sorry no one ever made you a mixed tape. I can relate because I never had a girlfriend to make a mixed tape for. Luckily in the 80s the metal fans were a very united group so we were all outcasts but we were outcasts together. There is a song that you should listen to, maybe not a reaction song but you should hear it. The song is Panic Attack by Biohazard. They are a NY hardcore band. I learned more about panic attacks from this song than I did going to doctors for almost a decade. If you choose to listen to it, find a version with the lyrics. It gave me an understanding of the symptoms and mental turmoil of a panic attack. Also I ended up in the ER because of a panic attack back in August 92 when I was away at boat mechanic school in Daytona Beach, FL. Back then no one had answers to my questions. Glad to see you so upbeat. Keep fighting the good fight.
OK UPDATE. because of a mix up on the album, 2 song titles got switched. So Panic Attack is listed as Pain and Pain is listed as Panic Attack. So although the song is Panic Attack it is called and listed as Pain. So listen to Pain because the song is actually Panic Attack. Sorry, I know it's confusing.

My brother in-law died by suicide on
April 25 2021. Five months after their mom died of cancer In November 2020. Life forever changed for my family on those days. My wife lost both of the people who have always been there. My children lost a friend in their uncle. Dying from cancer we expect the death but we don’t want to accept it. The thing with suicide is there’s no answers, there’s just a finality that you have to sit with. The should of would of could of is always there. The song that gets me every time is Snuff or Goodbye by Slipknot. It’s an amazing song.

I can remember a time where I was in deep depression...to the point where I questioned if I was going to want to see tomorrow. Later I was diagnosed with social anxiety. I learnt how to over come. I still have my bad habits of being a loner tho. But I can say depression isn't really a issue for me anymore. There is hope if you can get the drive. Doctor told me I was lucky I never picked up a bad addiction like drinking alcohol. But I never cared to start.

Your perspective was so interesting to watch, Amanda. I've not dealt with suicide myself, however I had a friend (who survived) go the full way to swallowing a lethal amount of pills. It was only passing out and being taken to the hospital (and a very intuitive emergency nurse) that saved his life, and he has definitely come out the other side of it.
When I saw the title of this video being a "survivor reacts" and knowing the song very well, I'm not sure what I expected, maybe teary and feeling validated, but instead to see you almost euphoric at the lyrics really changed the "hollywood" image I have in my head of a survivor. It was nice to see you pick up on the imagery and subtlety of the words.
I went and watched a few of your other videos, including your recent filing for divorce (sorry) and your first video the "It gets better" one from 8 years ago. It's hard to believe you're the same person compared to those, it's really inspiring and energising to see someone dealing with some of those dark points coming back out into the light and being this happy.
It sounds like your son has a good mentor in you. I was bullied every day at school and so glad to get home. One of the "cheat codes" to life I found later in my life is "I don't care about the opinions of people I don't care about.". So someone taking issue with my sandwich is instantly someone I don't care about, and the words mean nothing. It's harder when you're younger, everything is big, it's the first time, and bullying is not that easy to shrug off. But once you have this mindset, it's like a layer of armour.
    Lovely video, great work :)

      @MentalAmanda  2 года назад

Thanks for all the support and love! I was bullied for a LONG time as a kid. And let's be real, bullying just wears a different mask now but still is very much a problem in adulthood. Love your intelligent analysis of the lyrics. My interpretation of water over wine would be being “myself, rather than ‘under the influence’”, so being honest with yourself rather than hiding behind a “drug” (in the softest sense). Of course there’s also the interesting angle of DUI with wine too…
I suffered bullying at school from my unusual lunchbox ingredients too. I can empathise with not wanting to repeat that.

There was a big change in my life when I shifted my focus to doing what was best for me. It's not about being selfish. You can't help anyone if you don't take care of yourself. A staff member in a substance abuse program liked to say "Two dead batteries won't start a car." He was mainly talking about early recovery relationships but that applies to so much more.

Stress recently put me in hospital. We recently had a severe storm in the uk and i lost my roof. I began a prolonged and retracted battle with the insurance company who were dragging there heels and possibly not going to cover it. Within days i felt the very real bodily effects of having and immovable stressor that i spoke to my manager about as i knew i wasnt myself and as helpful and understanding they was and i was able to articulate; they could not remove or help in anyway with my stressor. Being at work somedays and further heavy rain just pouring in my home in nothing i could do was unbearable. I also had the risk that many lose roof tiles remained a constant threat to my, my family and neihbours with high winds continuing. Mental health immediatly effect bowel health and gut bacteria leaving us prone to infection and reduced immunity. The gut stops absorbing nutrients and a viscious downward spiral can take hold whereby poor gut health then effects your mental health and a viscous cycle begins. Besides the anxiety ,nausea, vomiting, headaches , stomach cramps and diarioah that i was experiencing on the daily my first next stage symtom manifested as a UTI with all those additional symtoms. Pain grew further with testicular cramps vomiting and complete loss of appetite . I was eating a small amount just to take some painkillers. The pain took me off my legs as being stood or walking upright was unbearable . I was in hell and at this point unable to walk or go to work . Over the next few days i became accutely aware that i had not passed a stool in nearly 15 days. Back and forth to a dr , i had many symtoms yet no diagnosis and they put me on broad spectrum antibiotics and anal suppository along with drinking copiuis amounts of a laxitive and still no movement. The whole digestive system was bloked and no longer working and that was scary. I went into hospital where a ct scan revealed an internal abcess blocking my colon and a perforated bowel. My infection markers were through the roof and and i was not far from sepsis which can be fatal if they cant get the internal infection under control. I was put on a cocktail of antibiotics and luckily for me in a way , when reaching for a call bell to get a nurse i rumptured my own abcess which then drained over the next few days. I was very sick and the time in hospital is a very surreal blur of long days and even longer nights but finally i was on the mend . Luckily i got away with not needing surgery ( the body being a great healer had walled off the perforation ) and it was the last thing they wanted to do with so much infection all ready present. Im much better now and thankfully my roof got fixed. Im usually pretty good at managing both my anxieties and depression and have learnt through painful experience to keep your mental health in good check . This event was an exception to the rule but a huge lesson for anyone to take a slipping mental health seriously as it can take very drastic effects on the body if left unchecked for prolonged amount of time. A great visual that i try live by is we all tend to stack our worries on top of each other( vertically) quickly becoming overwhelmed by the weight of tasks/ situation weighing us down. Remove one and you still have 10 overheard bearing down . Now take those tasks and put them in front of you. Like walls of plasterboard. Now you can punch through them one at a time. Concentrating on moving ahead one step or worry at a time . BUT your moving forward . One foot goes in front of the other. Nothing to it, but to do it! Anyways sorry for the long post but hopefully someone may find this helpful

This song reminds me of a Buddhist story I heard that helped me with fear around decisions, especially hard ones. Im going to loosely quote it.
There was a man who lived in a village near a mountain. This man wanted to climb the mountain, it was his aspiration. So he set out on his journey. Reaching the foot of the mountain he saw travellers coming down the mountain, after their journey. He approached them and asked how it was. The travellers shared their experience in detail. He decided to ask more travellers, spending a week coming back to the mountain daily, asking 100 people. He noticed each experience was slightly different, but they eventually ended up repeating from traveller. The man started walking away as a wise old man approached him and asked him if he was going to climb. The man said he heard every possibility that he didn’t need to climb it, he knows all he needed to know about climbing the mountain. The old man smiled and explained that the man missed the most important part. He missed the experience of actually being there and actually experiencing every hardship, that eventually leads to the beautiful view when you reach the top.

Your reactions are so good that it makes me wonder why you are the only one who does them this way. Why are people even listening to songs if they aren't going to find ways the song's message touches their past and can inform their future? Thank you for being "behind the wheel" and showing us all what we were missing.
Re: water over wine. Yes everything you said. Also, one other meaning is choosing sobriety over intoxication, whether literally escaping an addiction, or (more in keeping with the song's overall message) keeping yourself in a place where you're making your own decisions thoughtfully instead of just going along for the ride.
Let me put in one more vote for Dimash singing SOS; he just rerecorded it this week so now would be a great moment to start down that rabbit hole. And we know how you like all things rabbit. :)

And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
    Only I will remain."
Unto thine own self be true. XX

    The Shadows and the Monsters.
As a man lies in bed, The Shadows inform him that he is a monster who must die in order to cross over. The monsters in his closet invite him to join them. As he starts to reach for the monster's hand, he starts to realize that he was the monster in the closet. Then he heard his father's voice from beyond the grave saying, "You're not a monster, you're my son, and I need you to keep on fighting. So take my hand and live your life, my son." "My Father is always pulling me away from the closet of darkness."

This album was fantastic..."Make Yourself" Such a good message that I never really picked up as a 15 year old. I was a mess. I let the fear drive me...Didnt do things that I wanted to and hurt the one person that's ever mattered to me...Now im sitting here 20 years later a shell of the person I should be. Get Help guys. Im finally doing it now but I've lost the most important part of me...#Fear #Anxiety #itsokaytonotbeokay #Helpisoutthere #Dontwait

Great reaction. Great song. I’ve always taken “water over wine” to be less religious and more worldly (using religious references as a metaphor). Wine is good and flavorful and where the “hive” will naturally gravitate to. But are you willing to settle for water - which in comparison is bland, but necessary - in and effort to break from the hive and be your own individual. Just my personal interpretation.

I think the "Water over wine" part is taken from anti drunk driving messaging from the time. If you choose wine you have to let someone else drive. If you choose water you can drive yourself. You also have the idea of drinking to artificially suppress fear and be briefly carefree, whereas dealing with fear sober can actually work long-term. I think the specific words were also used because they are familiar from Christian stories and they are alliterative, which songwriters love to use.

The need to be needed is a hard thing to navigate. It can push you far away from...something. I don't know how to express the idea.
    Self? Center? Health?
Finding the "core" of your being?
Been on this ride half a century now, think I got a handle on it, mostly.
But I can't put it in the right words.

Also, the lead singer wrote this when he was 14 and has been struggling with depression and addiction. He's doing much better now but damn, this song just really encompasses how I've felt in the past.

Don't blindly trust. Figured that out the hard way. Tell you what my ex fiance used an abused that trust. She was sleeping with her Co worker I was warned what was happening. But I trust her over everyone else. Till she had his kid, then my world was gone. I'm not being a part of this. Last 5 years on my feet were at her side. I tried. Now I'm just that cripple that's always around.
