What is forgotten and important that Abe Keigo Sensei always said that Karate -Do is 70% Spirit and 30% technique and what meant by this that to produce spirit is much harder than to produce technique. I have known Abe Keigo Sensei for over 40 years and trained under him and Kanazawa Hirokazu Soke in Japan and those who make negative comments about these great Masters including Yahara Mikio Sensei and Asai Sensei do not understand Karate Do . www.skif.co.nz
This is wonderful older footage and shows Abe Sensei's excellent technique, teaching skill and patience in helping members. I think this dojo is Ebisu and I'm wondering if this was filmed at the time of the JKA legal battle?
Abe sensei was assisted by both Kanayama and Maeda. This is during the split outside regular instructor class times. Between '91 and '93 the Asai group and the Nakahara group would train side by side. Not sure who the 3 might be rehearsing a demo in the background but they look like they're from the Nakahara group
If you applied these sorts of standards to the old school a lot of them don't look great. Tanaka was not very good technically, Yahara's ankles were too stiff, Asai's kibadachi was weird looking, Kanazawa looks like a brown belt in most of his videos....The best of them technically were Osaka, Kagawa and Kawawada. But collectively, the old JKA instructor training program was a force. Too bad it's all fragmented and blown up. I still think that guys like Kagawa, Yahara, Kanazawa and Asai would be lucky to produce even four really great students at their own shops, whereas together they could have created another generation of great instructors at the JKA.....but that's just me.
This would have been filmed after the training session. What you’re witnessing is the study of martial arts. Budo karate at its finest from both sides of the split. This is budo.
