  • We're in Whaley Bridge Basin and Colin head's off to explore a chilling plane crash, the abandoned site of the B29 'Over Exposed' air disaster on Bleaklow in the Peak District. We're also enjoying the sights and history of Whaley Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal including the Transhipment Warehouse. Colin updates us on the work to repair Toddbrook Reservoir, which almost collapsed in August 2019 after heavy rain washed away part of the dam wall.

Thank you for honoring the airmen who died in the crash. We had a C130 military plane crash into a major road here in 2018. All 9 onboard died. The markers left on the site in your vlog made me appreciate the simple markers left by people who care here in Savannah. Thank you for the effort y'all make to give us some good history

We all love to have a laugh with both of you but when it’s a story that is no laughing matter you do it so well. Your piece on the Bleaklow air disaster was very moving. You manage to strike exactly the right tone - your choice of music and absence of voiceover in parts, just right. Naming those lost ...... very moving. Your Todbrook reservoir update was excellent too and if anyone reading my comment hasn’t seen your original piece on the reservoir, I would urge them to do so. It’s a superb piece of reporting. I thought the light reflecting on your face at the end of the vlog looked really lovely - I just hope Stockport escaped unscathed! Make full use of that cake shop while you can. 😋

I fully concur with this comment, and would ask, IF a memorial has been placed there ?
I did spot a cross raised, so wondered if this was that memorial.
I wonder if publicity, might cause the site to be damaged from Souvenir hunters, I hope not !
A very poignant, but informative Vlog, thank you both !

I don’t think the vlogs have lost any appeal for being confined to a smaller stretch of canal. Being able to go into more detail about the history and new stories about the area really shows the fractal nature of history. It’s fascinating as you go through lots of places and tell their stories, but even staying in one place, there’s so much to tell!

THANK YOU so much for listing the names of those lost in the plane crash. My two uncles, Canadian, were pilots. One died in training in Saskatchewan, the other died in a crash landing in India near New Delhi. My grandmother lost two sons in two years, devastating the family. What a sad but interesting story. Loving your educational and beautiful vids. hugs from southern Ontario Canada.

Slight fact detour on your journey. Burtonwood was the largest US airbase outside of The United States during WW2. Every American aircraft, used in the war, entered the UK here, either flying in, or shipped in and assembled there. It was also a massive stores and the supplies for the Berlin Airlift in 1948 were flown from there too. There is a local "legend" that Elvis stopped over there when he flew to Europe to do his National Service. I've got a mate who used to brag Elvis was his dad, after his mum attended a dance at the base and got pregnant! But as there is no written proof Elvis was even there, it's only his say so, but he can curl his lip and waggle a hip, so who knows!
Another great vlog. The landscape around you might not have changed much, but the content of the vlogs has been as high as ever. If you do come down the Brdgewater, past Warrington, it would be nice to meet you. Stay safe.

You have so many comments on your vlogs, and quite rightly so. This is the reason I don't comment on your vlogs more often, because either it would get lost in all the other comments, or somebody else has already laid down what I wanted to say.
This is only my third time of commenting. Reserved for exceptional videography. Your approach to the delicate matter of recording a very unfortunate accident 70 years ago, was so good. Well edited, great choice of music, fantastic views via the drone and overall production of that sequence...exceptional. As if that wasn't enough, the update on the Toddbrook disaster was better than any TV company could have done, with all their millennial 'production team' on hand. I salute you sirs.

Colin and Shaun . . . Well, you've outdone yourselves again with another truly captivating video. Perhaps because, I am a Private Pilot, Aircraft Mechanic and an Aviation Nut in general, I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary tribute you did at the crash site of the American B-29 Bomber. It was not lost upon me, that you also paid tribute to those 13 Airmen who gave their lives for our freedom. I had the rare privilege of visiting the Royal Air Force Museum in London and I made sure to let a few of the staff working there know, just how much I appreciated the valiant efforts of the British People who fought bravely and tirelessly to defeat the German War Machine; there is no way we could have won the war without you. I am so impressed with the follow up you did on the Toddbrook Reservoir. Colin, your attention to detail and research are truly to be applauded and admired, you could easily work for the BBC. Thanks guy's for such a wonderful body of work this week and I wish you both all the joy in the world. P.S., so glad to hear your foot is well Shaun ;)

Wonderful, Colin has a particular gift with his video and photography skills to invoke a range of emotions. Thank you Colin for your memorial tribute to the fallen American Heros, which I'm quite certain a large portion of Americans are not aware of this event, bless you, I for one was not aware. Great video as always, looking forward to your next release. Shaun, Otis, and yourself look in good spirits, I wish yall well, Thanks!

As delightful as ever you guys, and interesting too. Thanks too for hiking up to the B29 and listing the dead people. On a different subject, I'm not worried about Otis on the edge of the boat - he seems to have his sea-legs and no doubt he can do doggy-paddle!

Hi Colin, In addition to my earlier comment on this week’s excellent vlog, my partner wondered whether you are aware that the Cromford and High Peak Railway, which you referred to, was originally built on canal principles i.e. level sections of track with wagons pulled by horses and stationary steam engines pulling the wagons up inclines where locks would have been.
The reason it wasn’t constructed as a canal was that the limestone ground in that area was too porous to hold water. It’s lovely to see the ‘then and now’ photos of the area and apologies in advance if you already know all this 🙂.
P.S my partner wasn’t around at the time - he just likes local history!

Great to see the work that's been done on Todbrook since your docuvlog there and find out more about how the water is managed meanwhile. The section with the plane crash was beautifully shot and composed - what a surreal place to be, felt quite reflective watching that bit. Lovely choice of music again this week too, you really do spoil us with your superb content and editing. Here's hoping restrictions ease for you soon and Otis can find something other than geese to watch on your travels! :)

I liked this one alot. The drone footage is very good. It's amazing to see a crashed plane, all together like it is. In the US, people would have taken most of it home for souvenirs over the years. The names of the military service people was a nice tribute and thoughtful. One question, did you guys go and get cake?
