    • @Fotenks
      @Fotenks 3 месяца назад +5

      Yes, and the bag cell phones were not everyman consumer devices, they were mostly used by wealthy elites. It was several years down the line until there were mass market cell phones and many years more until it was commonplace for nearly everyone to have a cell phone. The AVP also only has a marginally better UX than a quest 3 which costs $3000 less. As it sits the AVP is very much a novelty and toy, and good if you want to get into the dev scene early for future devices.

    • @kevinbailey8827
      @kevinbailey8827 3 месяца назад +1

      I think Apple is trying to kill the controller, the way they killed the stylus on iPhones. The way they killed Flash in websites.
      The time to get rid of controllers is at the beginning. Vision Pro has eye-tracking from the start. Quest 3 doesn't have eye tracking. When the Quest 4 comes out with eye tracking, most of the compatible apps will not support eye tracking. Quest 3 has hand tracking but a lot of the apps I use on Quest 3 don't support hand tracking. It's going to be a mess.
      Controllers are a hazard. Several times I've had to pick up pieces of a controller that went flying through the railing and down to the floor below during a vigorous session of Gorilla Tag. The battery cover pops off on the first bounce, and the battery pops out on the second bounce. Some times the wrist strap also comes off, since it's held in place by the battery cover. The kid should have been wearing the wrist strap. I know all responsible Quest 3 users wear the wrist strap every time. It's not that big of a hassle. It's just a little hassle, but worth it. We always wore the wrist strap with the Wii, after that first unfortunate incident with the vase (or poor Aunt Mary), right?

    • @steffendetrick
      @steffendetrick 3 месяца назад

      @@kevinbailey8827 I disagree, but you’re entitled to your opinion. A lot of apps wouldn’t be possible without controllers and controllers to VR isn’t the stylus to a phone, a controller to VR is like a keyboard and mouse to a computer. A controller is a user interface with command inputs. A stylus is a stick you use to touch buttons with. Controllers in VR are also motion controllers, which adds another functionality to the UI. I demoed the vision pro and the latency on the hand tracking is worse than the Quest 3. Which honestly I was looking for that going into the demo because I saw reviews of people playing fruit ninja on the AVP and you can see how bad the latency is. My experience wasn’t terrible, but I also wasn’t playing apps that required me to move my hands fast. I’ve never had issues with controllers flying around, not on my quest 2 or my quest 3. The reason a lot of apps, don’t support hand tracking is because there’s too many inputs on a lot of the Quest games to not have controllers. Not having the controllers as a user interface makes the type of apps you can develop extremely limited. Hand tracking is available on RUclips, your feed, your home screen, the web browser , facebook ect.I use my hand tracking all the time unless I’m playing an game that requires a controller because of things like movement command input and just the overall complexity of some of those games that can’t be done without a controller at this point. I honestly prefer the controllers over the hand tracking for a lot of things. Controllers aren’t going anywhere anytime soon that’s one of the things people are complaining about on the AVP. Apple would first have to put themselves in the position to where they were the dominant force in MR/AR/VR to make industry changes, which definitely isn’t happening with the first generation of the AVP.

    I have the quest 1, 2, 3, psvr, psvr2, and tested the vision pro. The test was very "rollercoaster" like...and wasn't allowed to stray off their predetermined path. With that, I feel a few things:
    1. Q3 is really, really good...especially for the price. I think two things could fix this debate: OLED screens (I want OLED for multimedia) with better pixel count (no screen door), and the same apps for multimedia needs on VP. Give me Disney+, a TRUE netflix with 4k, a TRUE youtube with 4k...you get it.
    2. Vision Pro is nice in many ways and overpriced in a lot. To me, it was very close to being worth the price IF you are a true Heavy mac computer user, especially with the development of 3rd party dual screens coming out (beta now). I stray here because sometimes I feel it is worth it if you are Heavy into mac computers, but still, that price is a lot. Maybe teh cost of an apple display. VP would be better too if it wasn't metal and weighed a lot less, and lost some of the "cool look" and was more functional on the straps. Its heavy and even I, a heavy VR user, 15 mins in was like..huh, I really feel that. I wasn't able to test with the strap and was going to buy it but literally ran out as I was testing at both locations (prebought on app, then went to demo).

    I've learnt this about Apple and it's from the quote you said:
    "The AVP is x7 Price of the Meta Quest 3 which gives 90% of what the AVP does."
    Apple also sells a cleaning cloth for your iPad:
    "The Apple Cleaning Cloth is x5 the cost of a regular screen cleaning cloth which does 99% of what the Apple cleaning cloth does".
    iPad? iPad Pro is x4 price of a regular iPad which does 90% of what the Pro does. Same thing.
    I actually really like Apple products but the pricing is eye-opening to say the least: Yes they do provide excellent quality but the mark up factor means you need to go for the budget buy or previous generation to knock the price down to be reasonable again. I would like a section of GLASSES that provide multiple screens as alternative to AVP perhaps?

    tbh the best thing about this, is that Apple will slowly "normalise" sitting around with a stupid-ass headset on in public. Like they normalised having a pocket computer that can do everything, without looking like a weirdo.
    I know that sounds picky, like "you should be able to just enjoy what you want", but once this gets more popular it's just more comfortable to e.g. be sat in an airport and just disconnect the world for an hour of some TV.

  • @kevinbailey8827

    The thing I miss when using the Quest 3 is the integration with Apple's ecosystem. Quest 3 may give 90% of the experience, but depending on what you want, 90% may not be enough.
    On th other hand, in terms of price, saying that Vision Pro is 7 times the price of Quest 3 misses an important part of Quest 3's value. You can buy one Quest 3 and have the whole family use it (taking turns). Vision Pro is for a single person to use only. It scans your eyes to make sure you're the owner. Guest Mode is okay for demos, but is too cumbersome to use regularly.
    You might only use Apple Vision Pro a couple of hours a day. You might only use Quest 3 a couple of hours a day. But if you have a family, they might be also using Quest 3 while Vision Pro sits on a shelf.

AR/VR is known as MR(Mixed Reality), and has been done for a long while now. Quest 2 does it and you don't need to hold out controllers far out in front of you. Infact, you can hold it behind you and it still works. Quest 3 is better on almost every front except having a lower res display.

      Spatial video on the Quest 3 doesn't seem as "magical" as it does on the Vision Pro. I took some videos with my iPhone 15 at a Six Flags park on Monday. I uploaded them to the Quest 3. It's the first time I've done that and I was disappointed at how "flat" they seemed. You would expect them to seem flat due to how close the two cameras are on an iPhone, but they really pop when I view them on the Vision Pro. Apple is doing something to make them seem more "spatial".
      Also, a video of a carousel, where everything is moving (except the camera) was unacceptably jerky on the Quest 3, but played smoothly on the Vision Pro.
      I hope the Quest developers figure out how to better display spatial videos on their devices. It's a great option for iPhone 15 Pro users who want to enjoy their spatial videos now, but can't justify the cost of a Vision Pro.

    Interesting, their comments about feeling that objects position feel off (and that people feels everything is off and have trouble readjusting their 3D vision). That means that Apple sacrificed accuracy by simply using high-quality cameras and feed them through directly. That also means that Meta's method (using a depth sensor, then combine it with passthrough camera with the depth correcting for the camera offset with respect to where your real eyes sit) is truly going to be the correct method for future VR/AR headsets. Apple wanted to impress with display sharpness, Meta wanted to make sure accuracy and framerate and lack of persistence was executed properly to eliminate discomfort. Meta is the superior technical approach (in terms of raw innovation/technical vision), but Apple polish made them better in the eyes of everyone (for the short term at least, and marketing-wise)

      But the answer to your question is no. The virtual 4k screen on Vision Pro will not look better than (or even as good as) a quality physical 4K monitor.
      If you're looking at the ONE use case that will justify buying a Vision Pro, you're probably not going to find it. Most people who buy it are going to use it for multiple purposes.

    Vision Pro is sort of like an iPad. It's a big iPhone that doesn't even have a phone. It's a small laptop that doesn't even come with a keyboard. The apps it runs aren't as good as the laptop applications. Who would want that?
    It turns out many people want it. And some of those people end up getting something else. Why buy one iPad that the kids will fight over when Amazon practically gives away their Fire tablets? Just get one of those for each kid.
    Apple still owns the Tablet segment.
    Apple doesn't own the headset segment, but we're only a month into the Vision Pro era, and Apple seems to be the one to beat. In the short run, this seems good for Meta, as their Quest 3 is a pretty good product that's much more affordable. Maybe it's good for XReal and some of the others, but they don't get as much mention in reviews of Vision Pro. I guess we'll see in a few years, when Apple has less expensive (but still expensive) options and competitors have options that try to match (or beat) Apple's specs and features.
    Here is my prediction for ten years from now:
    "Spatial computing is ubiquitous, and it's 100% because of Apple. Nothing any of the also-rans did matters in any significant way."
    ...will be the narrative that gets debated on the internet.

    in my opinion it doesn't even matter how great it does what it does. If it's heavy/bulky with an external battery pack, people are never going to use it long-term. I think Apple just felt obligated to release something new since their product lines are stagnating.

    Considering Apple has had 10 years to look at what other companies are doing, the result of what they're coming up with is incredibly underwhelming. There's a reason everyone's comparing it with the Quest 3 because it's basically the same but with top notch (expensive) displays and cameras. And to have so little software ready at launch is just pathetic. Introducing a completely new product that's going to leave people with a bad after taste is the worst thing a company can do. Even if they'd come up with a much better version in 2 years time, the damage has already been done.

    I’m happy with my Vision Pro and hesitated only slightly with the price. I do wxpext the price to rise for higher end versions as it did for the iPhone. But I imagine people will be happier to buy at the higher prices in a few years ($4 to $6K) simply because the features will be so much more expanded out by then.

  • @michaelbabiuk8758
    @michaelbabiuk8758 3 месяца назад +5

    Coincidence? By that I mean I visited my local Apple Store today with my eye glass prescription in order to determine if the Apple Vision Pro was compatible with my adjusted eyesight. And when I returned home, I viewed this video review -- because I always enjoy Josh's and the Team's reviews of laptops. But I did notice a few errors and perhaps a bias with the Team's conclusions. For example, at the 4:19 mark, a comment was made that because the AVP lacks native Netflix and RUclips apps, that AVP owners would not be able to view any of Josh's RUclips reviews. That is simply NOT true. I could always watch Netflix and RUclips videos in the AVP's Safari web browser. (By the way, I never watch RUclips videos in a dedicated RUclips app. Grin.) And, bless his soul, your team mate really enjoys his Quest headset and I always respect a person's loyalty and product promotions - whether that loyalty is directed towards a person or for an object he values. But I couldn't help but suspect a fair bit of bias influencing his opinions about the AVP. because of his Quest ownership. I also suspect that for your teammates joining you on your field trip to your local Apple Store, the short time you wore the AVP, it was not equipped with the dual band head strap but only with the single band head strap. Other (if not most) online reviews indicate a much better ergonomic experience using the dual band head strap over longer periods of time. Finally, I don't feel - and I doubt very many others as well - would feel that the AVP will replace a person's laptop as his primary productivity computer of choice. Although the AVP -- IS -- a mobile computer with a unique interface, it won't replace a laptop for the vast majority of tasks a laptop can perform.

    • @SentinelofLogic
      @SentinelofLogic 3 месяца назад +1

      Having someone that has experience with AR/VR a headset already and thus does not blindly buy into the hype, does not make them "biased"!

    • @michaelbabiuk8758
      @michaelbabiuk8758 3 месяца назад +1

      @@SentinelofLogic I appreciate the comment. But you know, I wish your sentiments were always true. I can't recall the thousands of times that I have observed a person really familiar with, - for instance - the Windows/Intel PC ecosystem and then - for instance - tries an Apple Mac for twenty minutes or so will then comment on just how "bad" or "inferior" the Apple Mac ecosystem is. Or vice versa. I am sure you can see the truth behind that hypothetical case. In my experience, familiarity with something - especially something that person enjoys - invariably breeds a negative bias (either small or great) towards a relatively new experience. It is just human nature. That is why most persons I have known are very reluctant to try different foods - for example.

    • @michaelbabiuk8758
      @michaelbabiuk8758 3 месяца назад

      @@SentinelofLogic One more thing. I just viewed an early Apple Vision Pro app demo on RUclips. ruclips.net/video/VZLAKK3PRj4/видео.html. This app will allow the Apple Vision Pro to display one additional external Mac display. It is an early beta app but this only demonstrates that the AVP ecosystem is in its infancy and its will grow very fast. The good thing about the Apple Vision Pro is that the existing first gen hardware is built around a still very powerful Apple Silicon M2 class computer. The AVP sort of reminds me of when the iPhone and iPad were first introduced. Those two products are still around today with a very robust and viable ecosystem of apps and hardware. I suspect that the AVP will follow a similar evolutionary trend.
