"there are wonderful things in this world and if you happen to be poor those things seem more important than they are" talking about material things. What an insightful summation. I notice this in myself all the time. The things I was denied as a child are now vices for me as an adult. A wise person is able to see the true value in material things and not spend their lives chasing them, thinking it will bring you status or long lasting joy.
It’s excellent commentary on the facade of wealth culture that is pervasive in the black American community. I know a lot of people who wear expensive shoes and jewelry, and drive luxury cars, but they don’t own a home. Growing up poor messes with your priorities when it comes to money. So many people are obsessed with appearing wealthy to others, rather than building actual wealth. Factor in living in a society that is constantly yet subtly telling you that you’re “less than”, and it’s a recipe for a constant yearning for the approval of others. It’s a terrible cycle, and it self-propagates generation after generation.
No matter the vanity in pursuing wealth and acquiring things, people will always make them their goal because it is human nature to want to GET, HAVE, POSSESS and ACUMULATE.

I'll go back to 1st grade & start over.
This was beyond heartbreaking to watch, and even kids with an education have to struggle too the world we live in is crazy
Wait, one third of high school students dropped out in this era?! Now here’s something that no one ever talks about when they’re reminiscing about “the good old days”. I had no idea this was the case.
Because back then guys could find jobs that made it possible to get married, buy a house & car. Not affluent, but able to get by.
Way too many youngsters are told that college is the only way to go. Those who wish to be doctors, lawyers or engineers this is still valid,
however, having a skill/trade is still very rewarding. Nothing wrong with being an auto mechanic, plumber or electrician.
I totally agree. I hope young people's paths lead them in this direction because we need skilled workers these days. (But reading and high school graduation are still important!)
@@BrittMFH yeah.
I know a kid who wanted to be a plumber when he grew up, because the world needed plumbers. And he is a plumber now... he makes more then I do.
Lawyers are parasites off the people who keep society afloat
My husband was a drouput in 11tth grade. At 18 he started working at a trona ash mine. He is still there working as a heavy machine mechanic 42 years later and Makes $150,000 a year now.
This is a very well-made and thoughtful film, and is still surprisingly relevant.
These little movies would be just as helpful today for today's young people.
My grandma had a grade 2 education. No one in her family went to school - they all quit to help out working on the farm. Education was seen as a waste of time.
Interesting. Life was so different back then, but some things haven't changed.
Many aspects of humanity haven't changed for thousands of years. We tend to think we're the first generation to experience something, when it's been going on for a very long time.
Thankfully, this is something that HAS changed. It’s almost unheard of for a public school in a suburban neighborhood to have a 33% dropout rate. That’s virtually nonexistent today, and it has been for a long time.
@@dewilew2137 honestly, my comment was three years ago so I don't know the context but. 👍
I sucked in math and English. I graduated, but it was called a General Education Diploma. My younger sister was the favored one, the smart one. The beautiful, the talented. Whatever she wanted she got. I was the average one. For the rest of my life I'll never forget the fifth grade. I always dreaded parent teacher conference day. My parents came and my sisters teacher bragged about how smart she was. Then it was my turn, my teacher told my parents how it was harder for me to make A s and I don't remember what else she said. When we got home, my mother said "I'm so proud of your sister, but when I heard your teacher talk about you; I felt two inches tall, you embarrassed me." Gee THANKS MOM!
:(
That was awful.
Sounds like you were just lazy. Good grades can require hard work which some kids refused to put in.
Your mom sounds like a malignant narcissist. I’m so sorry.
@@davenone7312 how can you say that without knowing anything else about this woman? Some kids just aren’t good in school, but excel in other areas. Some kids have learning disabilities that are never diagnosed (unfortunately, this is far more common for girls). None of these things make someone “lazy”. I sure hope you never have children, and if you do, they probably resent you.
1.10$ an hour then is worth more than 13.00$ an hour now
I’ve actually heard about a good bit of older folks not being able to read/write. Not because they were just dropouts for the sake of the word but many to actually help in providing for their families, even as kids of the house. Idk I just found it quite interesting

I had to go to college to become a nurse but if I chose a different route I would go to a trade school over college for sure! As a matter of fact before I became a nurse I went to trade school to become a cosmetologist, then went into the military, then decided to work my way through nursing school which is what I wanted to be since I was a kid.
Statistics show that those who go to trade school for the things that really interest them wind up far better off than college students who come out working at McDonald’s because they either lose interest in their major or they just can’t find a job after all that time and money! My kids are grown with children of their own now, but if I had to do it over again I would point them towards trade school.
Why do you need statistics to prove that someone who has a trade job is better off than someone working at McDonald’s? Were these actual statistics, or do you just use “statistics show” as an expression? If I’d paid for that research, I’d want a refund.
Bless you, ma'am. I'm watching my niece and nephew go through the same thing now, languishing in college because they don't know what to do. They should've taken a gap year or go into trade school.
I was sort of a school drop out. I used to go to a german school and the system there is pretty complicated. There are different types of school for different types of children. Because everyone learns in a different way.
I was in a avarage school. Usually we graduate the 10th grade with a "secondary school certificate" if you have grades that are good enough to continue your education until the 12 or 13 grade it is shown on your diploma.
If not, then you go to a different type of school for "job education".
I continued my education in the 11th grade, but dropped out 6 moths later. It wasn't for me. It was very difficult, the system was pretty much like college. I did great in some subjects and had good grades, but others.. No matter how hard I tried, I always failed.
I moved to my home country a year later and got married. Now I work in a call center company with German and have pretty good salary for my country. I'm glad I didn't continue my education, it would have been a waste of time.
But I think I can go to university here with that German education of mine. Whereas if I wanted to go to university in Germany I had to have a diploma for the 12 or 13 grade. Thanks, but no thanks. 😂
Education is never a waste of time. Definitely go back to university in your country if you can.
Sometimes in my life , some of my family members treat me like a child today . If anyone raises their voice at me I could get furious . I had a very rough childhood when I was young . I was picked on at school . I had to struggle throughout my life . If a person speaks gently I would listen . I don’t have a short temper like many others do .
You must have watched the "Act Your Age" video : )

No wonder little Joe couldn't read that paragraph while standing up in front of the class... It was written in cursive! I say that with sarcasm because they don't even *teach* cursive writing in schools anymore these days. I was shocked when my young sister in law told me that several years ago!
I never stopped writing cursive, it's just naturally how I write everything. It's beautiful to look at and it's cool to write.
☻
I'm a Millennial and I think we were the last generation to learn cursive. Whenever I write longhand, it's usually cursive with a little bit of printing here and there for some letters. Weirdly, my 8 year-old nephew was able to read a birthday card from his great-grandparents written in cursive. I had no idea he could do that. There were some words he couldn't make out, but he's never learned cursive to my knowledge. Maybe his school touched on it and I don't know.
You shouldn’t curse. It’s very rude.

i am astonished how an individualistic society like the US had a period in the past in which the idea of someone is life's path wasn't based on some individualistic free agency theory but rather a deep understanding that it mostly depends on the social environment, i would have never expected such a thing, what happened to the us!.
In my life I've personally met two billionaires.
Other than both being men and being billionaires, they had only one other thing in common. Both had only a 9th grade education. When I hear of academic failure, one thing comes to mind based on nearly a century of observation. That one thing is inadequate instruction. I think the notable decline of academic education in the USA can be easily be traced back to the institution of the Teachers Union, and the powerlessness of the PTA.

Where did the time go? It's incredible to know this educational film was made 60 years ago! (1962-2022)
I graduated from high school in 1986 and received my diploma. Five years later I enrolled at a community college and took some courses. In 1991 & 1992 I took 2 English Classes and in 1997 took a Keyboarding class. ( Formerly known as Typing) I currently work for the Florida Public School System as a Cafeteria Worker. I was happy to improve my writing skills and learn how to type. In the world of 2022 I think about all the people who have college degrees and complain about how his or her degree, just sits on a shelf collecting dust!
I never remember going one on one with a counselor! Maybe I was supposed to go find who it was. But THIS counselor got her grade report and was concerned. Amazing. So in 2013 I graduated from LMC with THREE degrees all honors, which could have happened in 1968! All I needed perhaps was a counselor to suggest what I should take as college prep courses. But instead of school, I got married in 1965 after high school graduation. Our family doctor had offered to send me to college as FAR as I wanted to go if I didn't marry (yet), but I had NO desire for education. A good counselor could have changed ALL that!

school/college: no where near a guarantee. just get that job training for the gauranteed job, make sure it's what you want and are good at. school/college is merely a single good choice out of many. it's good to grow up on or slightly ahead of schedule. life is not long, so the sooner you get living the better. job security, sufficient steady income, finacial planning for retirement, your own home and car, your own time-off.
True, but the point of this video is about finishing high school. At the very least you should do that whether you choose college or not. I think most employers will be hesitant to hire someone who dropped out of high school.
@@trylikeafool unless a person is their own employer
Outside college and the military, (or jobs that require a college degree) I've never had to provide proof I was a HS graduate. Honestly, in 2021, as we head in to 2022, HS drop outs and graduates are working the same jobs as many College graduates (food service, retail)- minus the college debt. Seems like in many cases, HS dropouts and College graduates are breaking even (just my 2 cents!)
Depends on what you major in. In general, you still have more options with a college degree, and the statistics show that college graduates earn more money on average. But there are exceptions. If you major in social work, you'll likely make a fraction of the kid that skipped college and became a plumber. Job applications do make you list your education though. They may not require proof with a transcript or diploma, but you'll have to say you dropped out if you never got your diploma/GED...unless you don't care about lying, which is another problem in and of itself.
@@trylikeafool I know sales people who are high school drop outs that make way more than people who went to college or university, life insurance agents for example, business owners, investors, you’d be surprised, sure money isn’t guaranteed and salary isn’t set but that’s why a lot of them work harder for level pay and need to have great saving habits.
Until that dropout wants a job that requires a college degree, and yes, you do have to show proof.
@dewilew2137 outside the military, I have never been asked for proof I graduated high school. Not once in the last 25 years. What jobs require you to show it? College degrees I totally believe showing proof but a high school diploma? Never had to prove I had it outside military

Much better to go to college and then grad school and wind up$100000+ in loan debt and pay it off for the next 40 yrs
Back than college was cheaper and affordable, now college is more expensive.
Yes it is. Make much more money usually and have a better career.
Or don't go to a college that will cost you $100K. It's very easy to do community college for free or very low cost the first two years. Knock out all the gen ed stuff, then you only pay for two years of university. There are scholarships you can apply for, or other ways to keep your tuition low. For instance, I was a tutor and got free tuition in return. I also applied for scholarships and got them. Mind you, I was an average student - nothing special. You can also work your way through school. It will take longer than 4 years, but you can graduate with no debt. Do ROTC for free tuition...there are many options. I got a bachelor's degree in 2011 and graduated with no debt. My brothers also graduated debt-free. Don't assume the only way to pay for college is a loan.
Joe had other options available to him in 1962. "Come on all of you big, strong men. Uncle Sam needs your help again."
The interesting thing is that the kids at the track tryouts looked more like how kids looked in the late 90's versus the 70's and 80's. It must be the hair.
Elizabeth Holmes is a college dropout and look at her..she's got millions!
This is about being a high school drop out. It's about finishing a basic education, and showing you can at least do that to employers. College is optional in life.

The idea of having schools teaching women how to be mothers and wives and teaching men real life job skills, in addition to their regular school work, I think could be very helpful to them. A study/experiment should be conducted. I suspect, all biological women, taking classes on how to raise children and be good wives and all men taking classes on how to have a job in their back pocket, would benefit both very much.
I appreciate the idea of getting young people to think about not leaving school too early but it would be nice to hear a girl say something other than, 'I want to be a secretary' as her most dizzying ambition. No disrespect to secretaries or PAs (most of them end up running the office - it's just a useful way to pay them less). But it makes me think the women who dared to say, 'I want to be a doctor' or 'I want to be a screenwriter' or 'I want to be an engineer' were true pioneers.
Pioneers to a failed society. A sexual division of labour is hard wired into us, just like other mammals, but we have these idiot elites who want to force “gender equality” down our throats. No wonder Westen civilisation is on a downward spiral.
