I just stumbled on to this series and I will watch all of if over the next few days. I have Paterson in my blood, going back to the 1950's and before then my family came there in 1900, getting off the boat at Ellis Island and going to work in the silk mills as weavers and loom fixers and mechanics. All my Paterson memories from way back when are in black and white. I don't remember colors. Loved the downtown in the 50's where everyone from all over came to shop and go to the big department stores. My mother and aunts got their RN's from St Joe's nursing school. Back then it was a three year course with a two week break in the summertime. The nursing students worked like slaves and the nuns were their taskmasters. Memories are flooding back now. I remember taking the trains in Paterson to go upstate NY. I remember hanging out at the Ali Baba Club on Straight St. where the big drag racers would come and then go out onto the unfinished Interstate 80 to race. I remember in 1968 my friend Junior bought an old Oldsmobile from Main Auto Sales on Main St. What a fiasco that was. It was a 50 dollar car and they had to jump start it to get it going and when we left, as soon as we pulled into the street the steering broke. The salesman came running down and popped the hood and readjusted the clothes hanger wire that was used to keep the coupling from the steering column connected to the steering box. Then we drove it home. The good old Flower Power days. BTW, the trick with the tire tube kit was you rubbed the tire tube with the grater to rough it up where the leak was, then you smeared the glue on it, then you lit it with a match and let it burn for a couple of seconds, then you'd blow the flame out and slap the patch on immediately for a vulcanized fit. Worked every time. Thanks for taking the time to make this series.
Sounds like we have a similar Paterson history. Born in 1946 (Newark), but grew up in Paterson. Graduated from PS#5... largest graduating class ever. Held in the stadium... First job was at Libby's. Class of Central H.S. 1964. Ah, the memories, the memories. The Totowa Spa, "borrowing" 45s from Woolworths and other 5&10s, the Planters Peanut guy on the corner of Main and Broadway... I still smell the peanuts roasting! There are so many of us that miss Paterson... and more so the great city it used to be. Living in Englewood Florida now, but still a member of the Passaic County Historical Society. Don't get back enough but always have a "all-the-way" at Libby's when I do. Thanks for the memories, Freddy. A proud fellow Patersonian, John McKenzie Panagos.
Hi! Four years ago you left this message. My Italian family (mother's side) too came off the boat at Ellis Island. I will be revisiting Paterson soon as possible to hang around to see old friends. Do you still live in Paterson?
Thank you for making these great Videos. It was nice to see Main Street, St. Joseph's Hospital and all the shops on Main Street. I have been living in Ca. for 60 years but there is a special place in my heart for Paterson as it was the place of my birth and my Grammar School years. We lived on River Street and I went to Sch. # 18. We moved to Hawthorne where I attended my High School. We try and get back there for HS Reunions, but haven't had one for a while. Keep making your videos as they truly are good.
It changed so much i remember takeing the bus to go shopping there in 1980 i miss shopping there move to va an i haveto come back to visit family. an go shopping . miss it so different now
I was born in Uruguay but lived my pre-teens to my early 20's in Paterson and back then it was the city (anywhere in the world) where I lived the longest and where I lived all my teens, I still have a lot of nostalgia for it and it's the place that most feels like home to me. Thanks for the great videos!
Wow its amazing how much Main St changed from when I was a kid. Im 26 and still from Paterson. I also remember the bike shop with the big dog always laying down infront of the store I was always scare to walk pass him until the guy told me his a good dog lol. So many good memories. Thanks for the upload
The bike store you mentioned is called Fuji's the Dogs was named boe.I lived 2 houses away on main Street in front of Cathedral...brings back memories.....
That was phenomenal. I remember, as a young girl taking the bus from Belmont Ave to Main Street Paterson. I remember a blind black man sitting outside Woolworths all day. Everybody was scared when they approached him to put a quarter in his can. One morning I built up the courage to bring a roll of quarters and slip it into his hand. For the first time, I saw the biggest beautiful smile you could ever see on a person. He said, "God Bless."
@@PrideInPaterson I never forgot him. His smile what beautiful. His heartfelt, sincere blessing was very appreciated. He said "God Bless" with a slow, deep, intense, sincere, ethereal, and grateful voice. Not like the way anyone would say it. I was truly blessed by him. When someone is blessed by an ordinary man, you know you have been truly blessed.
Yo seriously thank you for posting these I grew up in south Paterson on Main Street near the library at my moms restaurant. My lady found your videos and it makes me home sick and happy that people still show pride in our city. I was born I Colombia but Paterson was always home for me, thank sincerely
I really miss paterson. I used to live 489 main st. For few years. Now i live in p.r. this is my second home . Good that i left behind. This is a great idea. Congrats.
Wow, a lot of memories. I was born in St Joseph's hospital '85. Remember my dad working for a company on crooks ave. My auntie also works st Joseph's after Barnet Hospital was closed. Remember my mom taking my brothers and i to broadway pizza in downtown. Best pizza ever
That middle eastern food in that area is great. Wow... Father English; those were some fun times. I remember going to the Old Fabian. Down Town is super crowded on the weekends; looks like you went early in the morning because lots of store were still closed.
Grew up in South Paterson in the 40's and 50's. . It was wonderful back then. Went to #9. Anyone else remember Mrs. Chadwick and the Geheimhart sistesr as teachers?
Thanks for these great videos...I really enjoy it all the way from Atlanta, GA. If you can please make a video of the 5 ward. I have a alot of beautiful memories of me and parents that are no longer with me. Thank you in advance!!
Love the video!!! About the bike store you mentioned. Don't know how old you are (I'm 77) but my father was a good friend of Gerard DeBaets who owned a small bike store near top of Main. Back in the late 40s, 50s, and into the 60s we used to si toften in the store on Saturdays and visit. Old wooden floors, etc. Gerry was a former world famous cyclist who won the World Championship 6-day Bike Race 18 times. He passed away in the 60s. Great guy. Good memories! Again - thanks for the tour down Main.
I grew up in Paterson since I was born in 1975.Moved 10 mins over a few towns but I don't go back just pass through. I hold Paterson in my heart but I left because I would've gotten pulled backwards. I can probably write 2 books on all my experiences. The hood was rough and it made me really strong. I went to almost all schools because I used to get in trouble too much. St, John's, 5,10,13,15,16,18,24 (finally graduated because of age) and 30 (mlk), jfk hs and NJ youth Corp (ged prep) . I give all thanks to God that I'm alive and free. Peace.
God Bless You Freddy. I'm Nae I grew up in CCP Christopher Columbus projects which they tore down the beginning of 2000. I'm 48 I was born at Barnet hospital in 1972 I've been in Paterson my whole life
You, I remember living at 116 Market street back in 1991-1992! We first lived on the top floor. That shit was haunted AF! Then we moved to the 2nd floor. I miss it sometimes. Walking down the block to school#2.
I can’t even name how many times I’ve bike down Main St from Crooks Av to Broadway when I was younger I used to bike from Downtown Passaic 🤢to Downtown Paterson 😊
My grandmother lived on Caldwell from early 60s to 79 until she moved to Dey St. building, She used to walk us down Grand St. to Go to Jacobs dept. store and to The Falls and Libbey's
Say Freddy. Do you happen to know when that Middle-Eastern neighborhood came about?, Please. Cause I don't remember it in the Mid. 70's or early 80's as a kid.
I wanted to also say that I first started visiting Paterson back in 1966 at my aunt Dots home on North 4th and Temple streets. I seen it on the GPS couple days ago. It's not the same I remember. There was one of those iron gates around it and a couple pear trees in the yard. I wish I had some pictures of that place. I do have some old pictures of Paterson when my parents were living there back in the mid to late 1950's, before I was born. I may have a couple of pictures that may be emailable that you might like; including a Patmos pharmacy ad..Can you get me a movie of spring street under the south side of route 80? My friend Jim used to live there even before there was a route 80. He is still alive but resides in a nursing home due to renal failure, since 2010. The last Time I was in Paterson was in 1989. My aunt moved from Paterson to Pomton Lakes in 1970. One more thing for now; I've had Johnny Hanges hot dogs. My mom's childhood boyfriend would take us to visit our relatives on weekends, because he worked at Allied Chemical, and lived on Haledon, in the late 1970's..
Another one more thing, I wanted to tell you; My dad's name and brother's name both are Fred! I lost my dad to cancer in 1974, and my brother in 1998. My mom, Elsie died in 2011 & I just lost my sister to cancer at the end of last year...

Patersonians familiar with these individual landmarks will already know them and enjoy seeing them again, especially if they've moved away and haven't seen Paterson in many years. I'm not a professional tour guide. (I don't get paid to do this) I'm just a private citizen that loves Paterson and use my own free time to make these videos to share with other Patersonians. :-)
