On their last tour before splitting up (wasn't known at the time), we caught them for like the 8th time in Montreal. We were chilling with Jesse and Misty out back (not sure if they were married yet, but she was running the merch table). We told them how badly we had tried to get tickets for the next day in Ottawa, which was the last one of the tour..Yada Yada they hooked us up with guest list for 3. We ended up being only two that drove down. Made some random kid's night at the door too, who also couldn't get tickets so we gave him our third spot. Theses vintage shows, in dingy venues were the best shows of my early 20s and I'll never forget them! In fact, the first time I saw DFA was with Metric and Billy Talent in 2005. I didn't even really know DFA yet, we were going for Billy Talent. My friends had tickets, but not me. I tagged along anyway, even if the venue was an hour+ away in the country (Bourbon North). I hung around the entrance, as we got there super early. Ran into Jesse in the small lobby. That was the first time he hooked a brother up! After that show, I was sold. They blew my mind for the first time. I had never seen bass being playing like that, like a lead guitar. Caught him in the crowd later and thanked him for marking a point in my life in such a kick ass way. At some point in between those shows, I 'borrowed' my parent's van and went to Kingston to see them. There was crowdsurfing, at The Grad Club, which is basically an old house converted to a campus pub and they were set up in the living room. That show and the rest of the night after was wiilllld. Jesse also randomly came to our table in the bar area and just helped himself to some of our wings 😆😂
I love these guys. Saw them live in Minneapolis in 2005 at the 400 bar. I think Black Rebel Motorcycle Club opened for them. Great times. Been a fan ever since then.
Damn usually I don’t stick around for a full interview but I feel like I could have listened to these guys talk for a few more hours. What lovely people

New album is layered. Didnt click at first but after a few listens, it holds it's own. Absolute banger of a record. Love the flow and sequence. In and out in 30 minutes
They made up many stories about their band's name origin. One of them is that they found an aviator jacket at a military surplus store with the phrase "Death From Above." They liked it and stuck with it. After having a legal dispute, they added 1979 to Death From Above. I can't remember if I've read about the aviator jacket story or watched an interview. I can't recall well.
Yeah, they basically just randomly tacked on one of their birth year's without much thought to further significance. I think it's Jesse's. Seb is '77? Not lazy enough to reply, but too lazy to Google.
@@notDonaldFagen, the 1979 is from Seb. I feel you. I am also lazy. I really don't wanna search for that source that mentions the story behind the aviator jacket with the logo "Death From Above." One day I'm gonna document everything about the punk and rock duo just for the kicks. The only issue is that I'm lazy.
He never was, I think a friend of his from his past was? He gave an awkward in answer in response at the time, he’s an awkward guy in fairness but they did say they were not apart of that nor interested in that. The idea of them being connected has definitely been taken out of context
Another comment I found on this comment section which is more informative, “ garfield did u do any research before posting this or did you post it because you're part of the cancel culture mob? jesse has publically responded to these claims. he condemned gavin, and was only acquainted with him because gavin ran vice, and vice has vice records, which distributes dfa's music. "When he started a video podcast and invited me on as a guest, I obliged. When he invited me to his talk-show and a party on election night last year, regrettably, I attended. Never without a morbid curiosity. Anyone who knows me, or has met me for longer than 5 minutes knows how curious I am. I never thought that my curiosity would lead to this moment, where now it feels like I’m walking through a lake of mud. Soon after the election, I began noticing that Gavin was promoting violence and a form of radical politics that I absolutely do not agree with. I have always been anti-war and anti-violence. That is my baseline position. As far as immigration and nationalism: I am the child of an Indian mother and a Canadian father. I was raised in Canada by my immigrant-Indian family who struggled to make it in a new country. I watched my highly educated Indian grandfather deliver the newspaper his whole life, instead of working in his proper field. My skin tone may not tell this story, but it’s a fact. Growing up I didn’t identify as either race, as choosing one group seemed to somehow betray the other. I’m sure this is the plight of many mixed-race people. So here I am, again caught between two things. Reality and fiction. The reality is that I am not "Alt-Right,” nor a White Supremacist. The facts are I am a mixed race father of two and a musician. I am so sorry for putting my family, friends and fans in this position. I never wanted to talk about politics, I just wanted to make music and leave that stuff alone. Unfortunately, my actions have brought me here, and I am deeply heartbroken about it. To a fault it seems that I give people the benefit of the doubt, and I hope that you will give me the same in return." you just copied someone's comments from reddit without any further details. if there's anything im missing please correct me but he's vehemently denied far right/proud boys association”

Is the band name inspired by Apocalypse Now? I saw a plane that had "death from above" on it in that movie which was released in 1979.
Possibly. I think I heard one of the guys say they were also born in 79
@@IveGotToast It was originally just death from above but they had to add the 1979 because of legal reasons
