She often chooses pieces which performers seldom does and is very difficult to express, and she plays so well, that means she is a genius and passionate.
My favorite moment in this is at 20:18 when she GRADUALLY releases the pedal. I’ve never thought of overlapping the blur of the moment before and letting it bleed into the next moment of articulate writing, only to gradually clear it. It’s such a cool effect.
This is the most emotional interpretation I have ever heard. Each note is caressed and that is hard to do with 12-tone rows. She makes it sound like Rachmaninoff.
The movement of her hands and arms is smooth, no wasted movement, even in fast and loud sections. She is really quite an athlete. I love to watch the way she moves when playing. And such a moving composition by Barber My eyes tear up every time I watch this.
Barber is NOT a twelve-tone composer; he's a Romantic... about as far from serial music as you can get among the American heavy-weights of the 20th century. This is an astonishing piece. It's got everything, from powerful passages of inner torment to sparkling dance-like sections to the mind-blowing fugue at the end-- maybe the greatest 4 minutes of all "classical" lit from the U.S.
@@billyraystorkhausen2380 hey buddy, read more carefully what I wrote, I said 12-tone rows. Have you ever actually read the score and seen the rows very clearly written out in the final fugue? I don’t need to be educated that Barber wasn’t a serial composer, but perhaps you need to educate yourself and read things more clearly next time?
There are quite a lot of uniquely great contributions in this rendition. The The almost improvised texture change at 9:30 was brilliant, and the sudden lifting of pedal at 18:45 transformed what would've been a lull in the action into an interesting development. The 4th movement tempo was a bit slower than I like to play it, but this made me reconsider that choice.
IS she the one who played the Liszt rhapsodie espagnole SOOO beautifully in the Tchaikovsky Competition...? This performance of the barber is just astonishing...
It seems there is a little distortion to loud notes in the upper middle register, probably miked up too much. Still a great recording though. Or maybe the piano is a little too bright in that range, sounds a little tinie to me.
She came second twice in the Tchaikowsky piano; once in the junior in 1997 at age 11 and again in the senior in 2011 at age 25 - following her 2nd in Van Cliburn in 2009. I assume you guys are talking about the first?
My understanding is that this magnificent artist is now enjoying a fine career. I raise a toast to her continued success! Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
Best performance I've ever heard. Very introspective and expressive. Brilliant!
I never tire of her performance of Barber. I have listened to this so many times. A benediction.

00:01 Movement I: Allegro energico
07:37 Movement II: Allegro vivace e leggero
10:09 Movement III: Adagio mesto
16:11 Movement IV: Fuga

Every time I listen to this I tear up. Unbelievable performance. On of the greatest compositions of all time.

Wow I didn’t know Barber used a little sprinkle of 12tone in this piece! Such an inventive composer :)
What is possible, if passion meets talent - hidden gifts, lucky who was there to listen live
Amazing - applause like that after the Barber sonata? OG AF
talented... and BEAUTIFUL... the girls got it ALL!
The best version of this piece I've ever heard
Cissy L seriously same here.
I like the way she plays this piece. Vibrant and mysterious simultaneously. I am becoming a fan of hers.

The dynamics are incredible. The delicate shifting from loud to soft, fast to slow. My attention is riveted through out.
I haven't known this sonata is so great. Thanks for notice us!! Best performancefor this piece
Fantastic!

Best interpretation ever.
Though I definitely prefer Cho’s style in general, Yeol Eum Son can just play so incredibly. Her sound and shaping really stands out to me
미치도록 어려운 곡인데 그녀는 이곡에서 성공을 거두었다
I love Fugue .
Yes, and the allegro vive, part Ii, is also great
The whole composition is exquisite. One of the few pieces that almost makes me cry.
뮤라벨 오연택님 연주보고 왔어요ㅋ
She is so into it that she doesn't know there is an audience.

Exquisite technique (and I know nothng about piano technique). She's so mindful of what divine music she's playing...
Of the 4000 views, about 30 were mine.^^
Quite an artist. We will be hearing from her until Jesus comes.
Does Jesus play piano even better?
HAHA
@bucciflash: Could you post the time stamps for the sonata's movements? Thank you!

She confessed later that she felt so bad with her 2nd award for Tschaikowsky competition, SHE DESERVES 1ST WIN!!

Can some one explain the &ey signature of the first movement?
here I come again
The reason why Son is sometimes much better than Cho.
I agree
The drama seems to come through better in her version.

the third part is my fav 😁

Possessed.
I think 19:32-19:40 is the reason she lost her first place.
I think the real reason she had not first place is 127° 30' E.
+Tiszt that's the hardest part in the whole piece.
Tiszt Idiot. Truly you are.
lol no one was beating Tsuji this competition
She got 2nd place.
