Thanks so much for the super informative video, just got one for myself :-) I do have a question though, do you leave your MacBook Pro charging the whole time? Mine seems to heat up and I'm slightly worried because I don't use the laptop's charger anymore, just the monitor's
Hi there...yes i leave my macbook charged all the time through the usb-c cable. Once the battery is 100%, it wont charge anymore. Macbook will use the power frpm the cable. But when i turn off the monitor and macbook, it stops the charging. There is a setting on your monitor to turn off the charging during power off.
Hi James. Nice review - could you confirm whether your are getting 4k resolution with a refresh rate of 60hz. I'm connecting my 2017 MBP using the USB-C cable that came in the box but I am only getting 30 hz and I can't figure out how to get 60 hz. Thanks!
looks like I solved the problem. I went to system preferences>Displays>clicked on "Scaled while pressing the option key". Then clicked on the "Show low resolution modes" which brings up the refresh rate dropdown menu. Now system reports says I'm running at 60 Hz. Scrolling up and down text pages is much smoother now. Man I called Dell tech rep and they couldn't help me. On their defense, I guess they focus on Windows machines and this is a Mac-specific issue. I decided not to delete this post as it may help someone encountering similar issue.
Hey there...sorry for the late reply. Glad you solved the issue. Yes its a hidden function for Apple Software. Otherwise i wanted to share this video for your solution: ruclips.net/video/YyfsgGBYvOQ/видео.html
BTW - later that day Dell's tech rep did send an email with instructions to change refresh rate in MBP. So in spite of my initial frustration, they did find the solution for me. Only bad thing is that during troubleshooting they asked me to reset the monitor to "factory setting" which I'm afraid may have got rid of calibration :-(
Hi, great review but I still don't understand if this monitor (without a thunderbolt 3 port) displays at 4k resolution with the MacBook? I should connect with an usb-c to DisplayPort Cable? forgive my ignorance pls
the edge bezel of the monitor is about 0.65cm. So when you combined both side by side it will be around 1.3cm thick...I think it will still look really thin if you combine 2 side by side. You can consider combining them using the Dell Dual Monitor Arm | MDA20 too. Side Note: you cant feel the bezel because its build internally. the screen is a 1 full piece construction, sort of like iPhone...you see the side bezel but u cannot feel it.
if i connect this monitor as external monitor with my laptop (1920 resolution). will it support. will i able to enjoy 4k resolution if i duplicate/ extend laptop monitor
well, from what i see, unless you have a video camera w/ less than stellar color rendition, the colors look vastly overblown with serious highlights clipping.... but, hey, it works. I'm very interested in how it performs in the sRGB color space - Dell's website doesn't suggest it's color accuracy for sRGB... since this is almost always promoted on every PremierColor monitor as sRGB color accuracy, i have a feeling it's NOT sRGB color accurate and the omission online was deliberate to gloss over that. Let us know how it performs in relation to AdobeRGB and sRGB? thanks

Hi, great review, I really liked it :) I have also a question for you: what can you tell me about the scaling of non native contents on this U2720Q? If you set 1080p and 1440p resolutions on that 4k monitor, how does it scale? Do games look blurred and softened at 1080p/1440P?And what about pictures, videos and text when you set non native resolutions? Do they get blurred or do they remain sharp? I know not all 4k PC monitors scale the same way - some do it well, some do it bad - that's why I wanted to ask you specifically about this U2720Q
hi there...the scaling is not noticeable...at least to my eyes....unless you are working on content that is sensitive on that settings...you might notice it tho....

@@JamesLeow It happens from time to time. When I disconnect the USB C, come back re-plugin it will go back to 30hz. I have found a way to fix it manually. In the Display preferences, go to Default for Display and then back to scaled "more space" which is 4k. And it will be on 4k 60hz again.

Hi there....yes its a Macbook Air. My RAM is 16gb....and there is not much of sluggish when using with the monitor...but if I max out the resolution...it does show some slowness...
I'm in exactly same situation to decide. I've a P2418d from Dell and the monitor doesn't bring any sluggish situation with MBP Late 2018 (8Gb of RAM, shared with GPU). Consistently my RAM goes to the limit and computer stars to paginate - you don't fell that because the HD is very fast (1gb/sec writing and 2.5 gb/sec reading). I've big concerns running the MBP 13, 8Gb ram on 4K to be honest.
i agree with you...it depends on the resolution tho..if i use a lower resolution on my MBA 2019...its ok..the max i could go before experiencing a bit of lagging is 3008x1692 60hz....higher than that its too much for my MBA....
Thanks. This was very informative. Question: how high is the monitor when it's on the stand in landscape position and adjusted down to the lowest height?

@@JamesLeowthanks for your reply. I am using 1920 x 1080 resolution @60hz. Text is too small in higher resolutions. Haven't noticed lag.
BTW - later that day Dell's tech rep did send an email with instructions to change refresh rate in MBP. So in spite of my initial frustration, they did find the solution for me. Only bad thing is that during troubleshooting they asked me to reset the monitor to "factory setting" which I'm afraid may have got rid of calibration :-(
ahh...hows the setting for now? back to normal?
Hi, great review but I still don't understand if this monitor (without a thunderbolt 3 port) displays at 4k resolution with the MacBook?
I should connect with an usb-c to DisplayPort Cable?
forgive my ignorance pls
Hi...the max resolution i can select from the menu is 3840x2160...buts not optimum cause i can feel MBA is suffering from lack of performance. 😀
Thanks bro 😎👍
Thanks for watching too bro...
Nice video :) The edge of the monitor how thick is it? (the bezel) I'am planning to buy 2 of these screens and hang them up with a monitor standard.
the edge bezel of the monitor is about 0.65cm.
Yes that it will work. Unless your laptop is a bit old or not specced out well enough. In that case it might be a bit sluggish to respond.

well, from what i see, unless you have a video camera w/ less than stellar color rendition, the colors look vastly overblown with serious highlights clipping....
but, hey, it works.
Let us know how it performs in relation to AdobeRGB and sRGB? thanks
man..this is technical for me..lol...but im curious how can i put this to test with a MBA as my workhorse? I'll give it a shot...
@@JamesLeow - i saw a gent w/ a similar set up do a full review for the UP2718Q about a year or so ago. Thanks for giving it a shot; if more trouble than it's worth no problem on skipping it, its fairly new, and eventually someone will do it already set up for those type of tests. But, if you go for it, definitely have fun with it... cause its definintely not worth it when it becomes too much work! :)
All the best, James. Good luck with the new tool/toy ! :)

James Leow - enjoy the monitors, my frind
Does the temperature of the MacBook any change when connected to the monitor ? cuz mime was crazy hot even though I wasn't running anything.
hi there...i did notice the temperature of my macbook air increased too...if i use softwares like imovie or garageband...it gets even hotter due to the workload...to overcome it I bought a laptop stand so the laptop has more room for air circulation...I also place a 1.5" portable fan on the laptop just in case when i need it....
James Leow Thanks James, I heard that the LG Ultrafine 5k monitor which is the one they made for Apple , would not have this issue, I am thinking to myself -that would be magic. BTY , I should probably get a laptop stand.
@@7396-u8h I did google the LG monitor before, is a very nice monitor cost almost USD1.2k...lol...anyway some sharing from my side....when i use Macbook Pro on the Dell montior...it doesnt hat up as bad as my Macbook Air....I feel the Macbook Air graphic card is not powerful enough thats why it heats up....the Macbook Pro is just fine...warm and not as hot...
James Leow well MacBook Air only have passive cooling thus if you use it for movie editing or any high power task, it will heat up. It’s normal

Do you have the Same Probleme ? Thank you
Okay the Problem only Comes when i have the Reaktion time on fast and Smart HDR switched on
was about to reply....i dont have these issue tho..:) Anyway thanks for viewing...
Does the USB-C cable it comes with support 4k @ 60fps? Usually only display port supports this speed.
hi there..yes..i tried 4k 60hz on the USB-C cable...works ok...but the icons and fonts were too small I had to move closer to look at it...lol...
Please show the split screen on MAC OS
for that you can go to display settings and select Mirror display or disable it…:)
Thanks for the review, it's very well done. Question - do the USB A ports work through the TB3 cable, or do you have to connect the USB hub cable still to the laptop?
Hi there...the USB A port on the monitor works direct with the TB3 cable...so basically its only 1 cable that does it all....😀
Hi, I love your review! I just wanted to ask if this monitor is flicker-free? Can't find this information online
hi there...I;d like to think so...didnt experience any flicker at all after so long....
@@JamesLeow Great, thanks! :)
Mine seems to always go back to 30hz in 4k. How can I keep this from happening? I have a 2019 16in spec'd out MB Pro capable of supporting 4k @60hz.
hmm...shouldnt be a problem when you set to 60hz...it should stay that way....does it only happen when you restart your mac?
@@JamesLeow It happens from time to time. When I disconnect the USB C, come back re-plugin it will go back to 30hz. I have found a way to fix it manually. In the Display preferences, go to Default for Display and then back to scaled "more space" which is 4k. And it will be on 4k 60hz again.
@@MitchSummers did you install the monitor driver ?
How do u make the monitor go up and down?
hi there…just push it up and down..there is no button, just using the weight of the monitor to move it..:)
@@JamesLeow I have the same problem. It's stuck at the top and won't move.
Could you please confirm its weight being 21.16 lb (without stand, as mentioned on dell.com)? Because the U2520D is 9.26 lb which is a huge difference.
I dont think its that heavy tho....the monitor itself i think with my bare hands...its about 6-8lb....
..At 0:11 Where did you get the lamp ball on your desk down right corner ?
Hi there...thats the XiaoMi YeeLight...you can get it online or computer shop..:)

Did you say its LCD? I mean now a days it's not worth investing in old technology like LCD right?
lol...i know...prolly not LCD should call it monitor or something else...i dont know...lol...but i paid for it anyway...pin point tech details can be found on description and dell's website...
Anything that isn't OLED or MicroLED is an LCD display, though.
Thank you for the review!
I see that you are using the MacBook 13, assuringly holding 8GB of RAM.
Have you witnessed any slowness using this external monitor with this resolution?
Any sluggishness on UI/apps like Photos or photo-editing?
Thanks!
Question: how high is the monitor when it's on the stand in landscape position and adjusted down to the lowest height?
hi there...when its on the lowest (landscape) the clearance is about 7" from table to the monitor bottom edge...:)
@@JamesLeow Thanks for your reply, James, much appreciated. But I actually wanted to know the height from the table to the *top edge* of the monitor when it's on the lowest in landscape position.

Can you control the brightness of the monitor via the keyboard on your MacBook? Thanks!
hi there...unfortunately no for brightness...has to be set seperately from the monitor buttons...the other buttons for typing and fast keys works...
Is it charging no problem the laptop as well as data/video?
hi there...yes the USB-C will do all that no problem...
@@JamesLeow thank you!!
Is there a way to activate the USB-IN ports when connecting this monitor to a desktop via display port? Or is that a USB-C exclusive feature?
hi there...i think its USB-C feature only...the USB is only for data, power
@@JamesLeow Hi, thanks for replying. Actually, I have read the user manual and I think that it's possible to do if you connect the USB C port to your PC. It can act as a data port while the display port handles the picture. I have ordered the monitor yesterday. Will let you know when I test it.
Does your MBA heat up when connected with this monitor. I know there are other causes for heat, them out of the picture. Put another way, does the MBA have to work hard to connect with this monitor?
hi there....to be honest the MBA fan was running quite frequent when its connected to the monitor..but i also feel thats because i am using iMovie a lot...other than that like browsing internet and spreadsheet work its ok...very silent and warm...if i leave the MBA screen open its cooler...but i usually close, hence i can feel the MBA is warm...so far so good...
Hi I forgot to ask but what is the stand/base made of ? cheers
The stand bottom plate is metal, the pillar is plastic covered but i think there is metal inside too...
How to open left USB port? my left USB port downstream not resond but rear side has working fine
Hi there...It happens to me too...all i did was to reconnect the USB-C cable...and it works back...
Can you get 60Hz on your MacBook with the provided USB-C cable?

Hi, how big is the distance from the table to the lower edge whom the screen has moved all the way up?
