I mean at this point in time I think it's kind of pointless to describe one's political affiliation as right/left wing anyway... people have certain issues that they feel about in certain ways... to say "that's a right/left wing talking point therefore I must be that and the other side is evil" is the mindset that leads to lines like "If you like this (GOW: Ragnarok) you're not right wing" and "If you're (Eric July) libertarian then you have to support trans rights"

Three criteria: Blatancy, hostility, and meta commentary.
Blatancy: How heavy handed are they? E.g. Is there a massive title card stating "She is the HERo we need!"
Hostility: How aggressively are people put down to lift others up? E.g. She-Hulk needing to attack or put down Bruce to demonstrate her competency or ability.
Meta commentary: What are cast and crew saying and is it actually representative of the material? E.g. A show has elements which are suspect and then this is confirmed in interview to have had underlying identity politic reasons for the changes made.

Hyper-Blatant is a great phrase to describe a lot of the 'politics' in modern media

    • @OlioH_
      @OlioH_ 9 месяцев назад +10

Your points are some of the major reasons that turned people incredibly hostile to GoW Ragnarok to this day. Even if nothing within the game was changed, if the people involved had kept their fucking mouths shut and not started antagonizing consumers online, I bet it would've been a lot easier to discuss the story and overall gameplay. Also, if there had been some effort in making Angroboda more a part of the world, instead of being relatively token (ironic), like say, for example, having her and her family be another instance of realm hoppers, like Kratos and Mimir.
This is why, until proven otherwise, I could never consider Arcane to fit any definition of "woke". Maybe the showrunners have gone out to virtue signal and be hostile towards shark-jumping dipshits, but otherwise, everything in their show is informed by the story, characters and world.

A point of contrast there would be the LOTR films replacing Glorfindel with Arwin as the person who rescued Frodo from the Nazgûl in Fellowship; substituting a character for one that happens to check boxes isn’t necessarily woke on its own. That’s not to defend Rings of Power by any stretch, and it’s woke in many more ways than just that one aspect, it’s just to say that there can be other reasons for doing that such as streamlining the story for an adaptation, as with that change in LOTR.

    • @Adorni

I think it’s cringe in the capacity that, if it’s all that matters in terms of the product, then it doesn’t matter which “side” you fall on, it’s equally bad. For instance, I _suppose_ I fall more on the right than on the left? But that doesn’t mean I think a film’s good because it pwns the lefties. I was equally annoyed in Kingsman, for example, when Obummer’s head a’sploded as I was when MODOK showed up with Donald Trump’s face.
I read comics and books and watch films to get away from this crap, not to be reminded of it. “The personal is political” is one of the most aggravating concepts I’ve ever come across.

Exactly. The reason people consume media is to escape from reality. The idea that real world politics needs to be represented in media is so absolutely insane and egotistical and is done merely because people are insecure of themselves and who should never be writers, actors, etc. Like, yeah I know elections are coming, wars are happening, a bunch of ugly shit happening but I don't want to be reminded of it constantly. I just want to see Luke fight stormtroopers, Indy going into ruins for artifacts, people uniting to destroy an ancient evil by traveling to a volcano etc. But we can't have that, because a bunch of idiots who have no back one want to control narratives and shit and who can't write to save their life are the ones making critical decisions in our media. I hate this era we're in. Is it any wonder Razorfist calls it the Iron Age, an era where independent media can and will rise over the ashes of the golden and silver ages of corporate media.

Their lack of willingness to express outright politics and judge something based solely off of its artistic and compositional merit is why I respect MauLer, Fringy, and Rags so much. Seriously, it's such a breath of fresh air, even in the spheres they're a part of, for them to take a step back and analyze something purely off of how good a thing is or not. Media can adhere to my own worldview or criticize it all it wants, but if it's bland, boring, or completely disorganized and poorly executed then I could not care less about it. I would recommend clarifying terms, because a lot of people would easily define “Woke” as being a set of ideology, usually pro-social by intention, that directly results in a worse work.
However, I don’t think that’s fair. That may be how it’s more frequently used, but you could absolutely have creative decisions influenced by “woke” ideology, and the creative work is still great.
I think it was Drinker or Mauler who said, someone in the writing room for Arcane, for example, could have wanted a gay couple as a part of the leads simply because they wanted representation. If the idea stopped there, then you’d be left with nothing but a pro-social intention and no characters, but they didn’t. They wrote characters, and really good ones at that.
I’d admit that so much of the recent media we’ve been looking at has been terrible, and has also had so called “woke” ideology. But these two are separate elements to writing that I feel have been conflated, in no small part to pretty obnoxious statements from the creatives involved.
As well as that, you have examples where this kind of approach absolutely ruins the story. The example that is so stark is Dr Strange and Wandavision. That decision to have Steven not appear just because he was a guy is very cut and dry.
There’s an entirely different discussion about what ideology is being implemented and whether or not you have a problem with that, irrespective of the quality of the work. If you are against a certain perspective being pushed, I don’t think you’re going to appreciate the quality of the work in spite of that.
Given how annoying this conversation can get, EFAP is the best for just calling a spade a spade. If a director says something broadly prejudice in relation to their film like the Dr Strange quote, EFAP will cringe at it, because they have the pretty agreeable perspective that prejudice comments in general are cringe especially if it hurts the story. However, EFAP ain’t gonna see a gay character and say something is woke, or jump to conclusions about an actress being used to reprise a role while being a bit older.
The Spider-man 2 topic was fun and I would like to hear more from Fringy on that because I don’t think the story is good, and some of the quotes regarding the direction of the game seem a little suspicious. However, there are reasonable explanations for the creative decisions that don’t involve “wokeness”. Whether that’s the case or not, some of the gameplay in that game is horrendously underdeveloped and it seems to be the result of a director just ignoring pretty good faith criticism of the first game and misplacing dev time.
EFAP is always as best faith as they can be looking at this stuff, and that’s why I hold their criticism in high regard.

I said it once and I will say it as many imes as needed to get a point across, Nicole age is CRUCIAL in Aizek's motivation and guilt trip. Hm being older guy that advised his girlfirend to take a position on Ishimura that led to her endangerement - is heavy weight that constantly pushes him down into depression and feeling of guilt throughout the game. Her suddenly becoming twice his age totally obiterates that psychological dynamic. Now Nicole is a strong independant woman that influence others to do as she says, which, unfortinatly, detracts from tragedy of her death. Also, there's a bit about her medical position - once again, her being young medic that gets overwhelmed by the horrors that surround her is leagues better motivation for her eventual suicide than an older eperienced medic going through the same journey. All in all, they wrecked Nicole and fans are justified in being outraged.

This post pointed out something I didn't realize. I wasn't as sad about her ending herself. It seemed logical, cold and a choice she made so she wouldn't have to die horribly.
In the first game Nicole comes across as an overwhelmed young adult. She's far more vulnerable. When other characters threaten her I felt she was in danger.
Her ending was tragic. She was a cornered girl, not a woman without any other options.

Unfortunately the pro Dead Space argument just lapses into the, "This stuff doesn't matter. You're basically an incel for pointing this out." type of argument. No one who defends these games can make a case other than to ignore it. "You're stupid for pointing that out, it doesn't matter just ignore it." The fact is cultural shifts have pushed developers to uglify their characters over the last 10+ years. Now you might think this is a good thing, a bad thing, or have no opinion, but when people point out that this is happening, a deluge of, "Well it doesn't matter, what about the graphics." isn't really interesting or helpful for a public discussion. The people who complain about this trend have even more of a point when it's a remake that had a previously attractive character made less attractive in the remake version. If Dead Space (2023) was released in a vacuum evaluating the hotness of the main characters would be different than what actually happened; the fact that it's a remake that had the character likenesses changed to appeal to cultural norms that are held by an incredibly small minority of the population. I think it's more than fair to point this out what is being done in a lot of these modern titles and in the case of a remake, it's conceivable that someone could ding some fraction of the points off the final score for something like this, as it isn't faithful to the original and isn't a change that meaningfully improves the game in any way. I really anticipated the EFAP guys would have a more mature and nuanced point about a subject like this other than "Lol incel."

Honestly I can't blame people for having such a hair trigger when it comes to noticing "woke" stuff. 2015-2021 was a hefty period for shoehorning in heavy handed, mainly left wing politics into media. Even more of a reason to keep a level head when consuming media and think for yourself.

I just wonder if people who talk about woke things think that something can be woke and good. Everyone points out wokeness when the social politics damage the writing, but isn’t wokeness about the presence of the ideology?
If it’s just the ideology, Arcane could definitely be considered woke and good. While it doesn’t tackle racism/sexism, it certainly has major themes about the harm of classism, which aligns with the same part of the political spectrum, if not directly a part of wokeness.
I just don’t like to talk about wokeness in stories, only the writing. If the wokeness caused the writing to be bad, I understand, but I don’t care to bring it up

Personally I'm very tired of the woke vs non woke debate. But like, I thought that the entire point of the term was to call out shit that had preachy progressive politics shoved in that only like, twitards and californian hollywood show-writers care about. We shouldn't need to debate whether something is 'woke' or not, it being preachy, on the nose, eye-rolling, jarring, badly written, and cringey is the entire meaning of the term. At least, that was the way that I always used it. It'd be like debating whether something is 'ostentatious' or not - if it's not immediately obvious that it's woke, then it's not woke.
Arcane isn't woke because there's gay women in it. Arcane would be woke if they stopped to make Vi say, 'opposing gay marriage is bad, guys'. Arcane wouldn't be woke if they, idk, added a subplot in season two about getting gay marriage legalized in their country, AS LONG AS the scenes make sense with the characters' stated motivations and all that. 'It's woke but it's good' is a nonsense statement to me, it's like saying 'it was preachy and badly written but it's good'.

@@lokiswager I thought the term woke originated as people who supported the progressive messages, and then was taken by people annoyed by it. Like the reverse of what happened with the n-word, where it used to be hatefully used by oppressors, and is now an endearing term used by the oppressed

Wokeness and good quality are on different sliders.... Spectrum? You can have a non woke show that is also bad. Many value wokeness over everything else, so will offer positive judgements for an otherwise low quality product. At the same time , arcane is both good and woke.

    • @unfilthy

Az and Nerdrotic said, as part of a Real BBC discussion recently, that they consider things "woke" when the agenda/politics/message takes precedence over the storytelling to the story's detriment.
That definition excludes media that simply has things like main female characters, ethnic diversity, or gay people in it as automatically "woke," because their claim is that those things already existed for decades without overshadowing or hindering storytelling, so that is the difference. Under that definition, Arcane wouldn't be woke. It might be considered "liberal" or "progressive" by some, but that doesn't have to affect the quality of the story.

I have no care about where they individually sit on the political “scale”, their sexualities, personal biases, etc. I do find it funny though, just because of how critical they can be of other creators and artists personal choices and being self realized purveyors of common sense in a vast array of subjects, yet I can smell the fear when near of stepping foot on the cultural “battleground”, so to speak. This is neither good nor bad to me, to be clear. In fact I believe both choices are double edged swords. I don’t want them to discuss politics, but I don’t personally believe people should run from subjects either.

I agree that toning down the attractiveness of women or any character from previous iterations is woke. That is a conscious choice to bend to cancel pigs who want that to happen. If the sfory needs them to be a certain look, the story needs to justify that.

I can accept the idea that Dead Space has a few odd decisions but isn't necessarily "woke" but Spiderman 2 1000% is. That game in many ways is one giant Virtue Signal
Making Mary Jane playable again when people hated her missions, giving her a tazer, claiming that makes her stronger exponentially than both Spidermen without any actual explanation, and having her take out a criminal syndicate full of elite warriors because girl power even though she's supposed to be just a reporter (a writer that looks like the writer and nothing like the actress they supposedly based her on) . Having a section where you play as a deaf girl spraying trans graffiti just cause, random meaningless missions where you help a gay guy hook up and that's literally the whole mission. Random giant BLM and pride flags in the game (except i the middle eastern version obvs) Peter getting unceremoniously shoved out the door and retiring in his early 20s to fight climate change or some bs and saying that Miles is "the real spiderman" or whatever and constantly apologizing for atuff that literally isn't his fault. Randomly making Black cat a Lesbian and making that a big deal for like five seconds. Etc

But when people claim it's woke that Peach can do the obstacle course and Mario can't, because she's a leader who's grown up in Mushroom Kingdom and Mario is just a plumber in Brooklyn, is just bs. You guys are goofing on the uglification of female characters, but it is an annoying phenomenon. If it was just "this is just how this character looks" no one would care. That is not the case tho. It's agenda driven changes/decisions being made.
The complaint isn't "I want all women in games to be hot". The complaint is "I don't want weirdo activists making women in games uglier for their delusional mission of influencing beauty standards or for any other agenda (actively not appealing to the male gaze, etc)."
