      You could probably do with a high gain DAB aerial on the side of your house, to help bring in a stronger signal...
      Where I am (Northamptonshire) the signal is nice and strong and in some areas I can even get coverage from neighboring counties' multiplexes. The true Achilles' Heel with DAB is the super low bit rates, resulting in a less than stellar audio quality.

    The DAB system is technically very interesting. Each transmission consists of hundreds of separate carriers each carrying a relatively slow data rate. The slow rate means that the effects of multipath propagation is minimised - hence the multipath problem of FM, for example, is more or less eliminated. Delayed signals from different transmitters affect things just like multipath propagation. As long as the delayed signals arrive within a certain time period, they aid reception rather than destroying it. This means you can get a pretty seamless coverage in a particular area, with no need to hop to different frequencies as with the FM system. The overall DAB data signal is spread out between the different carriers, with strong error correction within the bitstream so that loss of some carriers (due to fading or interference) does not mean complete loss of data. The system is designed to carry multiple audio channels, and was initially developed by national broadcasters like the BBC and other European broadcasters who had multiple programme streams to transmit. It did not readily translate to the regional FM world where individual stations on discreet FM channels predominate. This explains why DAB is not big in the USA which has relatively few national networks as such.

      It depends on what your antenna system is like. If you've got one of those really small aerials that stick to the windscreen (which you can buy off eBay or from certain car related shops) then it's no wonder your DAB reception is poor. You need a decent external aerial on the top of the car's roof mounted vertically.

    Very interesting site! Regarding DAB, here in Norway the national FM network was dismantled some 8 years ago. DAB has poor coverage in rural parts of the country, where FM gave a noisy, bur readable signal at least. Some local stations still have FM, but probably not for long. DAB should be spelled backwards ;)

  • @RikAindow
    @RikAindow 14 дней назад

    Great video, one of my favourites as there aren't many videos on DAB. I've been using DAB since around 2002 and sadly the quality has taken a dive over the years which is mainly driven by commercial stations dropping the bitrate to focus on fitting more on to the multiplex. Quantity over quality springs to mind. I guess they thought they'd get away with it as many DAB radios are mono anyway (one speaker). Thankfully DAB+ is improving the quality and I'm glad to see more stations adopting it, even if it does mean my Pure "The Bug" is now receiving fewer stations.
    The issues many are having with DAB signal dropping in car can be solved by fitting a roof antenna rather than relying on those stick on windscreen antennas which are useless, especially if you have a Ford with a heated front windscreen.
    As for reversing cameras, the cheap ones are known to cause interference with DAB and other radio signals so either think carefully about where you're running your cabling, check your earth points, or buy better kit. Ideally a combo of all three.
    Finally, SSDAB, small scale DAB: I find it frustrating if you're in a car and moving around as the limited range means you're soon having to find another station.
    How long will it be till the big commercial players decide to go after it like they did with all the local FM stations around the early 2000s?

    • @Bond2025
      @Bond2025 15 дней назад

      @@ToomasTelling DABradio is finished in the UK, it failed because of -
      1. Advertisers
      2. Poor Audio Quality
      3. Choice of different stations
      When it first appeared, the audio quality was brilliant as bitrates were high, some as high as 320kbps stereo on the BBC test stations. As time went on, it was all monetised and people looked at ways to get back their investment and make money. It went away from being a method of transmitting stations to one of selling advertising, making every channel play automated music with adverts and a bit of talking over the top. Many of my local DAB stations play the same music from the same feed, but change the announcements. Why just have 4 stations on a multiplex for example, when you would have 12 or 24 all running really low audio bitrates.
      That is why no one listens now. Who wants MONO audio at a bitrate and audio quality lower than a standard AM radio.
      In North West UK if you listen at home or in a car to stations on 88-108MHz FM Stereo, the audio quality is really good. Listen on DABradio and you get thin or tinny MONO with 16kbps to 64kbps and it is "quiet", plus there is no processing, no dynamic range, no compression etc, so unusable in cars.
      Most stations rely on streaming.
      DABradio was a "gap filler" while Streaming Services were improved and people started to use them more thanks to unlimited data on phones etc. I now just stream music in the car, I don't bother with DABradio and only use normal radio if there is no coverage on the phone!
      The choice of frequency up around 200MHz was odd too, if they had used 68-88MHz the coverage would have been vastly improved, especially for mobile use. Less transmitters and links would have been required. I use 4M amateur band (70MHz) and the coverage is really good compared to 2m and 70cm for example.

If it was high up, a downward tilt or something like a Slim Jim or J pole would be better to give a blanket coverage and not get too far. No need for higher gain aerials there.

    This similar to the Low Powered FM station we have here in the US. My college run a radio station that used to transmit on 88.9 FM but streams only now. The low FM band is not usable by commercial licensees due to interference from other RF sources, but it good enough for use by non-profit entity like college district (small polygon in British terms).

Although it seems not to have all the channels via streaming yet, RX TV reports “the Government expects streaming to become dominant, with licences to broadcast terrestrial services only to run until 2035.”

    Does anybody know that DAB+ is actually official in the UK ? As I have seen no Ofcom document, and have asked Ofcom when did they approve DAB to DAB+ comms licence, and what was this start date ?
    Its the same for alpha phone numbers, they are not Ofcom licenced or approved, as such unlawful under the Comms Act. I have asked and put in a concern to Ofcom.

      You're not missing much. It's like digital tv. If you've a very strong signal and a good receiver its great. If you're any way "fringe" reception it's painful to listen to. Music breaks up and drops out and speech sounds like they're broadcasting from a bathtub under the water !

    • @paulsengupta971

      Also they cram as much in as possible in as little bandwidth, so many stations are mono and low bit rate. Even the high bit rate stereo channels aren't as good as their FM equivalents. You do get quite a variety though.

    • @Bond2025
      @Bond2025 15 дней назад

      With all those stations hooked up to the same audio feeds, just with different adverts played and different announcements.
      it really is in a terrible state now, I was SO disappointed when I got a DABradio after it first come out. I expected what was lied about on the false DABradio adverts about "crystal clear sound" and "Great audio Quality". I got lots of stations, only two local ones in stereo and everything else was mono, some sounding worse than MW. I had DABradio as standard in my car and used to listen to KISS as the bitrate was 160kbps and it was stereo. That last a few months and it went to 128kbps, then 112kbps and now I think it's 64kbps MONO. No one wants that rubbish quality. I wanted a DARradio with TWO speakers (for stereo) and could never understand why so many of the Pure radios were sold with just one. They knew everything was going to be low quality mono, so no point selling a radio with two speakers!
      Advertisers lied about DABradio to promote sales and they misled people. Many were fined and forced to stop lying about the audio quality, coverage and claims of "interference free crystal clear audio".

    Joking aside, it's such a shame that one day in the not too distant future, FM will be taken away from us. DAB might sound great while zooming along the M1, but the actual audio quality is rubbish compared to FM. BBC Radio 3 is given a higher bit rate than, say, Talk Radio, which is understandable, seeing as R3 is a classical music station. But with good old FM and a decent receiver, the quality is top notch. DAB has more stations than you can throw a parrot at (sorry!) , but we're told to like it or lump it, a speech station has a low bit rate, tuff!
