I think you're digging your own rabbit hole.
Taliesin created Cad as a counter to Molly, both drawn from people he knew, and part of himself.
On an inter-personal level Taliesin, Matt, and Marisha are thick as thieves, and Tal & Ashley have a bond forged in the completely alien world of child stardom.

This is evidence that Caleb, under slightly different circumstances, would be a cold-blooded rival to even Trent Ikithon himself
Fairly confident that was Trent's goal. Cold, ruthless Volstrucker mage who has the potential to succeed him as an assembly member. I also recall Liam at some point mentioned Caleb (pre-mental break down) was Lawful Evil.
Like, if they changed his memory, so that a Kryn soldier started the fire, Caleb would've massacred the entirety of Xhorhas by now.
@@rosiecooper8030 shit, you're right. It'd be like changing the target of a nuke lol
@Pelinal Whitestrake point is, he outright stated that he doesn't want to die and wants to stay in his position as long as possible. Besides, he and the Cerberus Assembly kept a beacon hidden despite it causing a war and possibly compromising peace negotiations, without the king knowing, this doesn't scream "nation first" to me. It seems more that he is expanding his pool of personal power by placing capable apprentices in important positions and by studying dunamancy and other less known branches of magic
Under different circumstances Caleb could have been the BBEG of this campaign
Imagine an ex-patient walks in after 5 years and starts crushing guards against the ceiling and shooting lightning out of his fingers
Sounds like something Palpatine would do
I had the same thought. I was wondering why he chose such a devastating spell. I know he has sleep or silence, or literally anything other than that. Then I realized he is playing his character not necessarily the smart thing that Liam knows to do. It really show when you see jesters reaction. Jester and Caleb are normally on the same page but he just disregarded and went for the kill. I mean if i have cables power i fucking would too. catch me in the place where i was tortured and held prisoner, i killing all of them. even if they are "good at heart" says cilmy(how ever you spell it) they are all apart of the problem. You can tell jester obviously doesn't have the hate for them so it was sweet for her to try.

Not gonna lie I just realized how genius Sam’s ad scheme is. How many of us would normally skip ads in a RUclips video but we don’t skip Critical Role announcements to see what crazy, stupid, hilarious thing Sam comes up with. I appreciate the whole cast and everything they do so I may watch the announcements anyway but I know a lot of people who skip anime openings and RUclips sponsor ads that watch crit role all the way through so I gotta admit Sam is doing a damn good job.
Partially true, his ads are normally way too exciting to pay attention to what he is actually advertising :D
But it's true that he makes me watch them every time. While I always skip over the other announcements and the intro until Matt's summary starts.
I rarely skip Sam's ads because I love watching the cast just break down laughing.
There's literally an app that auto-skips sponsored ads (SponsorBlock on chrome web store). I whitelisted CR though because Sam is far too entertaining; more so when he breaks the cast with his shenanigans.
Often the excitement for Sam's next ad is what drives me to click the next episode after every draining but exciting few hours of content
honestly ive always skipped to right after the opening song (sometimes i listen to the song but not usually) with the timestamps.
This episode was Caleb’s “No Mercy Percy” moment, and I’ve been waiting for it for a while. Caleb is a powder keg that only needs a slight spark to go off, and this episode demonstrates that perfectly.

Imagine being friends with someone. That someone is meek, shy, reclusive at times, but over the course of the months that you spend together they open up, little by little. You learn about them, they learn about you, you share secrets, things you haven't told anyone else, and naturally you become friends, family even. Nothing could break you apart or change the perception of that other person in your eyes.
And then that other person starts crushing people into bloody balls of gore for no good reason.

I pretty much did exactly that at our last session
I think the best part is you can see, just for a moment, as he explains why they shouldnt, how badly he wants to say "yes, okay, fuck it, lets keep going." Hes even more excited than they are
The whole time they were planning the heist, I was expecting it to be non lethal. I mean, they're trying to NOT be criminals in the eyes of the Cerberus assembly, so I assumed they weren't gonna kill anyone...
And then 15 minutes into the mission Caleb starts crushing guards like fucking soda cans....
Oh no
There was no Caleb. Today, he was Bren Aldric Ermendrud
They’ve also been planning on assassinating Trent, so not much of a surprise.
They already are criminals in the eyes of the Cerberus Assembly, always have been.
I love Ashley's comedic breaks with her messaging amidst the cosmic existential horror that was going down at the asylum.
Also the look on Travis's face when he realized his illusionary dragon and fog cloud actually killed the time the party needed to escape and kept Beau from rejoining the party. Oh man.
So far, every time Fjord has used Marine Layer it has caused problems and not solved them.
Yea, Fjord has been a mixed bag in this campaign. I can’t tell if it how Travis has played the warlock/paladin class, if it’s the limitations of the classes themselves, or a combination of both. One thing is for sure though, he messed up royally with summoning a red dragon and marine layer.
Marine layer seems to only be good for covering escapes and 1:1 battles with no one else involved.
@@clave7203I think it's because this was the first iteration for marine layer, so matt hasn't fixed the mechanics. The new version is great for a group fights and very easy to play with.
And as for the dragon... Usually Matt disregards illusion magic very easily, but in this case I can see how an incredibly smart mage preoccupied with his treasure would see such an obvious diversion and immediately pick up on it
It's good they're stealing the "no magical tracking"-necklaces, after this stunt, they'll need them for more than just the tomb taker.

Of all people I would expect Caleb to understand that and sympathise with that to some degree. But instead of that he crushes them all to death. Which I find hypocritical specifically because of his past. He was given a second chance, the benefit of the doubt, so I thought it would have been fair to at least try their best to do the same for the guards they come across.

The “stealth” mission this episode is basically how every one of my Thalmor Embassy Skyrim runs goes. I try to be stealthy, immediately get caught, get piled on by 12 guards at once and brutally brutally murder every one of them
Wait, you're telling me it's possible to stealth through the mission?
On second thought, forget it - they're just Thalmor, fuck'em.
I tried that the first time as well...they got what they deserved 😂
I actually did it stealthy, then i didn’t find it satisfying and went back and killed all guards especially prison chief 😈
Pretty much how I played Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
If you're a high elf and wear thalmor robes, you can actually walk around and talk to guards and they won't suspect anything. Most other races can get away with wearing the robes and walking around too, but will draw attention if you stick around guards too long or try to talk to them. I love this darker side of Caleb we see during the infiltration scene. The dude pretty much single handedly kills four people with zero hesitation. Can't wait to see how the other members of the M9 react to this new side of him.
Not really new, just his old self that he’s kinda been repressing. He used to torture people for Trent
it’s not new

Watching Matt's face while Marissa kills that guard with acid is hilarious to me. He is so proud, yet concerned, yet annoyed all at once. Their relationship is so cute!!
Considering that as a high level monk, how easily she could have knocked that guard unconscious in a single surprise round; yet she chose to use acid, I'd be concerned too!

Watching their plan for stealth go to shit and gradually turn into a bloodbath is like me playing Assassin's Creed or Dishonored. Like, best of intentions to sneak in and suddenly everyone is just dead.
Technically still a stealth mission is no one is alive to report you!
We all know that feeling.
Plus it's usually what happens when they try to stealth
Stealth versus Russian stealth.
Same! Lol
I adore how the haunted asylum that's a government façade is a staple of horror films, and it's the Mighty Nein who bring in the horror. This would look AMAZING in a series episode.
Talk about subverting expectations. This episode came out of nowhere.
@@SilentCartagrapher Yeah, I don't know how much awareness of it Liam had in the moment, but the result was just, chef's kiss. Each player has something I deeply love, and in Liam's case, even more than his acting, it's his ability to blow shit up (in the figurative sense), derailing the narrative and making it much stronger at the same time.
@@SilentCartagrapher this was a 3 hour horror movie from the guards perspectives, and a traumatizing black comedy for the "Heroes"
This radiates the same energy as the hospital fiasco- in the best possible way.
The hospital fiasco was less "horror movie-ish"... if I recall, it was way more... silly? Absurd? Not sure of my wording here, but there was actually no deaths that time, if I recall correctly. Just a lot of chaos... and breakfast foods not where it usually belongs XD but yeah, both were attempts at stealth missions, with hasty retreats.
Oh yeah! I LOVED that scene so much 😂 Molly was the bloody best!
(no spoilers pls, I'm at _this_ episode)
Travis has used marine layer 3 times this campaign, if I count correctly, and 3 times it's been a detrement to the Nein more than anything.😅
It's a cool idea, but ultimately a very stupid one on Matt's part. If Fjord could control the placement, and have it so that HE can see through it at all times with an addition of one other, then it would have been a great ability.
I think with Avantica is was a good idea and did help with some of the battle, but he should have dropped it much earlier.
At this point it's a mechanical panic "hide" just as Caduceus' invisibility going off lol
I think of it like when an octopus inks in a blind panic.
Reading this after the final boss fight. "Make it 3-1 and the 1 makes up for t"
I liked right after the break, you can hear Liam whisper “I think you and I could burn the building down.”

Matt as Cymie: "He's a bit dense at times." (Gravity)
Brilliant joke.
OH GOD I MISSED THAT
Brilliant, I also did not pick up on that!
Yes!!! That flew so low under the radar.
Remember folks, distractions don't have to be huge beasts all the time. Sometimes, a simpler distractions is the way to go. As soon as Travis described the dragon, I immediate thought that he should have chosen it to look like figures running away from the tower instead.
I would have gone with Vestirogna calling out to him. He would Definitely have turned around for that. She's been Missing for weeks. Now she's here? Very distracting.
@@samanthagoodwin1516 I don't think that would work. Summoning and image of Vess would probably get the same result. Ikithon almost certainly knew Vess is dead. I think that would have been just as obvious of a distraction.
The only way to actually distract him is to create a minor inconvenience that would require his attention if it was real. As soon as you make something dramatic he knows its a distraction and immediately teleports to the vault.
I think the best play would have been to make an image of a fake Caleb appear to be running off into the woods or teleporting away. As if the fake Caleb already had what he needed and was making a break for it.
Creating almost anything tips your hand that it's a distraction and it's covering for someone still on the inside. I think the only illusion that has a chance of working is one that makes him think he's too late for it to even be worth the spell slot to teleport to the vault.
Yeah, everything Fjord did was bad... Marine Lair and Illusion are both not helping!
@@hamsterfromabove8905Genius.
liam literally mentioned it when travis brought the major illusion idea up, sad he didnt remember it 😭but the only illusion I thought of was them running off in the field to atleast give them more time inside
The best part about Taliesin's Snowman Joke, is that if you look closely, you can see him smile at thought that becomes the joke at 2:31:16, but waits the full 4 seconds to drop the joke. You can even see him wait for travis to finish his joke, before demolishing the cast.

As a DM I had a 'default guard' recurring character in my campaign for 2 years called Jasper; who was prone to the most CONTINUAL suffering induced by players, thrown from a cliff, battered in the street while in recuperation, tormented emotionally during a flight for his life...

*4th-level evocation*
*Casting Time: 1 action*
*Range: 120 feet*
*Components: V, S, M (a black marble)*
*Duration: Instantaneous*
*A 20-foot-radius sphere of crushing force forms at a point you can see within range and tugs at the creatures there. Each creature in the sphere must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 5d10 force damage and is pulled in a straight line toward the center of the sphere, ending in an unoccupied space as close to the center as possible (even if that space is in the air). On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and isn't pulled.*
*At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d10 for each slot level above 4th.*

It's so fun to see the way they physically RP some of this stuff. Liam often expresses distain or distress in Caleb with his facial expressions, and Matt is airtight in his role when he's playing a character, the way he contorts his face and hunches over is so good.
It sucks to miss all these details when i'm listening to the episodes on the podcast form but i'm glad they're doing it.
Me at the beginning: I LOVE heist episodes. They are the BEST!
Me by the end: turns out, they're even better with a side of bloody massacre and just a dash of cliff hanger.
They have two people who can learn silence
They have a plethora of spells available
And Caleb's choice of spell for this sneaking mission is one that violently pulls people into things and crushes them alive.
I know this is a *super* old comment but for some reason my brain won't let me not point this out. Sorry
When they chose spells for that day (including gravity well, but not silence), they didn't know they were gonna pull a heist. It wasn't known until they met w Astrid that am.
What was silly was going off her timeline rather than taking long rest before so they could get better spells for a stealth mission.
