    This is easily a top 10, and maybe even a top 5 NES game. It checks all the boxes. Great to hear your take on it

    Ah yes I too was an angsty teenager that had no interest in Kirby.
    I am 30 and I absolutely love this little puffball.

    The float over option was for the wee kids, quite clever really.

    This was the first Kirby game that I got to play, and I absolutely loved it. I'd always wanted to play the Game Boy game, but I was smart enough to back the wrong horse (Game Gear; great hardware with an anemic library), so I missed out on that until Super Game Boy hit the shelves. Anyway, the entire Kirby series is spectacular, but Adventure had these levels with just such a neat structure to them. Add to that the tons of secrets to find, myriad of strange abilities, and that challenge that had more teeth than the first game without going overboard, and you had a masterpiece. If you have a Game Boy Advance, I'd recommend checking out Nightmare in Dream Land, which is a GORGEOUS remake of Adventure. Every popular thing gets a remake, reboot, soft reboot, bootmake, whatever, but Kirby consistently does it right; it's an update, but still maintains almost all the charm of the original.

    I had this when it was new, and couldn't put it down. I think the limited color pallet is just due to the fact the NES pallet is so limited, and it looks like a Gameboy game because Kirby was originally released for the Gameboy.

    I don't mind the slowdown. Considering the game is maxing out the system, it's easy to overlook. Not sure how familiar you are with Kirby music but a lot of classic Kirby tunes came from this game are are still used today in the newer titles.

    I was also a "Kirby's a game for little kids" guy back in the 90's, then a friend of mine--who's a game collector-- loaded up Kirby's Adventure one fateful day so I could take a look at it and WOW! I was super impressed. Never got the chance to finish it before he moved so now I'm hunting for a NES and cart so I can add Kirby to my list of finished NES games.

    I played the original Kirby's Dream Land on Game Boy and loved it, so hearing that a similar game was coming out for NES was really exciting at the time. Watching this video helped me remember the joy I had with the NES version, and kinda made me miss playing through a Kirby game. I think the last one I played was on the GBA or maybe the DS.

    Thank you for calling out the color scheme. Every review I see of this game calls it "so colorful", and I've just never understood it. I agree it almost looks like a Gameboy game at times, and the bottom 3rd of the screen being a constant two shades of brown doesn't do it any favors.
    Don't get me wrong, I love this game. But colorful definitely isn't a word I would use to describe it

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  4 года назад

      Really?! I hadn't read any of the other reviews, but if they're calling it colorful, that's just ... no lol.

    • @Sinn0100
      @Sinn0100 4 года назад

      It's the ground that's making it look so drab. The backgrounds are filled with colors but that damn brown just sucks all the life out of everything. It doesn't help that it's the biggest thing on screen.

    I bought this game brand new shortly after it came out. After beating the entire game and playing the bonus levels, it brought back nostalgia for Dreamland. It was so cool to experience that back then as a kid. I was nostalgic even as a kid.

    Funny I'm in the same boat you were. I was approaching my teens when this game was released and I remember thinking it definitely was a kids game. Plus I too already had gotten the SNES. So any NES game to me was considered way obsolete. Which in hindsight is a total shame because some of the best NES games that really pushed the systems limits came out in the final year or 2 of the NES's life. Looking back Kirby should definitely be considered an NES classic.

  • @SoundsideSherry

    If you enjoyed Kirby's Adventure, I'd definitely recommend the GBA remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland. The colour palette got a major boost (and the stages are downright *gorgeous* ), the lag is pretty much gone, there's less empty space on-screen, and there's a an entirely new mode where you get to play as Meta Knight!

    I also missed out on this. I finally had a chance to play this when I got my NES Classic. It's a really cool game, though I agree that it can be a little easy because you can be overpowered. But it's a minor complaint...the game is really cool and a testament to what the NES can do. Great video!

    No doubt I missed out on it as well for the same reasons, till shortly after college anyway. Never and still don't want to play the Game Boy games. And of course that ambitious little port on the NES has replayability for decades😁 I was also surprised by the love that went in to the making of that considering the consoles life was almost done, but all those late Taito titles surprise me as well.

    PS: If anyone wasn’t aware, Nightmare in Dreamland is a faithful GBA remake of Kirby’s Adventure with an amazing facelift. Seriously gorgeous game, can’t believe HAL has stopped using sprites. Also: it has Meta Knight mode.

    I got Kirby's Dreamland for gameboy for Christmas in '92 and it was a favorite of mine (next to Super Mario Land 2 of course) but when I rented Kirby's Adventure the year it was released it was actually a game I really wished I had next to Mega Man 2.

    Bought mine used at k-mart forever ago. Took it home to play and everything was in french. I was completely lost on the story but liked the game anyway. I'd have returned it but I just assumed it was a french game. The art style seemed a but European and the commercials had him fencing. So kirby is forever french to me now.

    Another great video! Love the Kirby games. Got into the series late, so haven't played them all, but of the one's I have, I love them. Favorites are (in no particular order) Kirby Super Star Ultra on the DS (especially in coop, great to have coop local wireless, wish they did this on the 3DS Kirby games!), Kirby Planet Robobot and Triple Deluxe on the 3DS (these games look amazing in 3D especially Robobot and its game mechanics), Kirby Epic Yarn on Wii (especially in coop), Kirby and the Rainbow Curse on Wii U (gets a lot of hate, but I love it, especially in multiplayer, such great asymmetrical gameplay mechanics that take advantage of the gamepad and up to 4 players), Star Allies on the Switch (gets hate too, but also love this game, again, multiplayer), and my favorite is probably Return to Dreamland on Wii. Love the multiplayer (up to 4, did I say I love coop multiplayer?) and the gameplay and story is just so epic. Still want to get/play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS one day. Also, any other games you guys recommend in addition to these? How's Kirby Dream collection on Wii?

    I remember reading that HAL intentionally allowed players to fly over any section of a level because they wanted a game for all ages - so if a real little kid was stuck, they could fly over the part of the level giving them trouble instead of getting frustrated. There's no incentive not to other than personal accomplishment so young kids wouldn't feel like they had to throw themselves at a challenge over and over. It's really nice! I see a lot of people comment that they think the game is too easy, but with how many horribly difficult games existed on the NES it's a great change of pace, especially for young kids.

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  4 года назад +1

      If that's the case, that's actually really cool. I don't know how many times as a kid I'd rent a game and have it be way too difficult and then I just return it. Even worse if it's a game you ended up stuck with as your one big Christmas or Birthday game for the season. And if you're a little kid figuring out how to fly over all of the enemies, there's something to be said for learning how to problem solve lol. Thanks for sharing - great stuff.

    • @MaxW-er1hm
      @MaxW-er1hm Год назад

      After the midpoint they put in enemies in the sky and shoot things at you and have tight confining levels, you definitely can't just float over everything by level 3

    Kirby on the NES is the vg equivalent of a talented, catchy hair metal band who release their debut album the week after Nirvana drops "Nevermind". Just bad timing. Had it come out in 1990, maybe I would've given it a go. But by '93 I was 19 and a pink 8-bit puffball just couldn't compete w/Castlevania IV.

    Kirby probably has one of the best track records in all of gaming in terms of game quality. Some games in the series are better than others, of course, but there's never been a Kirby game released so far that I'd say is outright bad. (and that's counting spinoffs, too!)

    Just beat this!! Great game, and great review. Love how Dedede turns out to be a mistaken bad guy and helps Kirby. Pretty cool idea for a kid’s game. I’m not a big fan of the final boss though. And the slowdown on this game is some of the worst on the NES in my opinion. Definitely not a dealbreaker but some bosses suffer because of it.
