- Here are the steps Wooden Boat Dan uses to make Epoxy Fillets for boatbuilding. This is a step by step video from preparing to fillet, through the full fillet process. NOTE: I did not precoat the fillet area with unthickened epoxy. West Systems recommends do this to get the strongest fillet. Enjoy!

Your calm focus and organized approach are keys to quality work
Thanks Wallace! Keep calm and carry on :D
Thanks Dan, very informative. I use the wife's cake making supplies also. One thing I might ad though, get a longer piece of PVC pipe to use as your roller to push the mix down the bag. They can also make good fillet tools as well.
Cheers for the video,
Nick.
Dave - I used the mixture that Russell Brown recommends - 2 parts 406, 2 parts 407 and 1 part 404. It works great! Dan
Nice lookin good instruction. I move fast and use more but very good for someone to learn. This is the way to do it folks.
Thanks!
awesome!
Very neat job well done.
Thanks Desmond!
I will get to it eventually :D
thanks for the roller tip.
You're welcome (a little late :D).
Excellent video. Just getting ready to start fillets on my 18' Simmons Sea Skiff motor well.
I'm curious about the wood fillet tools and stir stick and the de natured alcohol. Does soaking the stick prevent sticking? It looks like you are able to reuse all of them, but I can't even seem to keep the purpose made plastic sticks clean fro more then a few uses.
Glad you like it David!
Soaking the fillet tool (stick) does not prevent the epoxy from sticking. The trick is to clean your fillet tools immediately after use, and use denatured alcohol is needed. With the wood fillet tools, you can resand them again and again to keep a clean edge. Best, Dan
Dan - which West filler do you use for filleting? Is that 404 High Density or 407 Low Density? I did not hear it mentioned. Thx.
Nice video! One question. Can that also be used like Bondo that can be easily sanded?
It does not sand easily Al. It is hard stuff!
What is the filler material made out of? loved the video!
1 part 404 High-Density; 2 parts 406 Colloidal Silica; 2 parts 407 Low-Density (I use West Systems).
can you use epoxy fillets when using polyester resin and fiberglass over top?
I have not tried that. Chemically it might not work properly and could cause problems
Dan, You should use your canon for video.
you can also just cut the corner off a ziploc.. instead of the pastry tip thingy.

If mix is thicker... it will squish the bag opening bigger.
What is the filler made of
The filler is a proprietary material from West Systems. A combination of their Hi Density, Low Density, and Colodial Silica filler.
Ps freezer bags work as well
Yes they do!
