Epoxy Filleting, What Went Wrong!

- This week I finally put the epoxy fillets around all the seats but it wasn't all smooth sailing!! In the end I managed to fix it but it took me a while.
Also reinforced the transom panel and dry fitted the hatches.

I love your honesty and humility. I can tell you that I have built 3 boats, and on ALL of them have made some significant mistakes. Epoxy is wonderful stuff, but a pain in the @$$ to work with!

That tape around the edges is a good idea. I've been having to scrape the excess off and I always end up with sharp little edges when I miss some. Love your work mate.

Just want to say these videos are really helpful. Right now I’m evaluating designs for a building project of my own. I’ve narrowed it down to the GIS, the Phoenix III, and the Ilur. Right now the GIS is looking really good to me. Maybe it’s because there’s one for sale not too far from where I live!

Those are 3 very different boats! The GIS will plane, the Illur won't, but it will take on heavier seas than the GIS. The Phoenix is somewhere in between I would say!! Building wise I'm quite sure the GIS will be the simpler to build...🤔

Hey mate one tip from me! I painted the inside of my Argie 15 flotation tanks with primer and white 2 part epoxy paint. I'm hoping it will make it easier to see things inside there. Of course if I ever need to make a repair inside then I'm up for scraping paint off first....

I like to leave the inside of tanks, compartments etc in clear (epoxy or varnish) so that if there is water ingression through a crack or leak or whatever, it's easier to spot the darkening of the plywood. Otherwise it will be hidden by the opaque paint, just a thought! 😉
@@TheBoatRambler Yes very good point. I have a friend who leaves his unpainted too so that if there is a repair to be made he doesn't have to scrape off all the paint through a tiny port hole to get to the plywood. Too late for mine now! We'll see how it goes.
@@jasonstork9606 you increase the risk of osmosis if you paint both sides of GRP, partly because it gets hidden longer. The inside of flotation tanks don't get painted as they don't see much UV so don't need it. The GRP surface itself is much harder than any paint so it's factually not needed. If you are really adamant that you want to coat them then you are best to to scuff them up and apply a barrier coat of proper epoxy. I don't see the point painting behind GRP unless it's for visual reasons.

Aren't you installing deck lids on the side tanks? Or at least valves to let off pressure when getting warm?

I do plan to eventually fit a small round inspection hatch on each, although I'm quite sure the seats wont pop with the heat! 😅
@@TheBoatRambler Eventually, if you don't want to make inspection hatches immediately, a little drilled hole from inside hatches communicating with underseats would avoid the pressure. Considering that existing hatches are hermetic, of course.

Good job , but honestly , you should not need any tape at all , its all about having the correct radius filleting tool , and drawing the fillet in one smooth even draw . If you consistently hold the filleting tool at right angles to the panels , there should be very little epoxy to clean up. It will also be more accurate in width than any tape can be.

I have a bunch of Moraknivs around the house. Use them for wood working, in my tool bag, bushcraft and even have a couple in the kitchen drawer!! 😂
@@TheBoatRambler I just have the robust, it's quickly become my favorite belt knife. I did a forced patina on it with vinegar and it looks really good. The 30 degree bevel on these blades really makes it easy to keep a wicked sharp edge on it. Don't know if my wife would appreciate them in the kitchen lol
I have a Heavy Duty model and the Robust in the workshop, a Pro S in the boat, and a couple of 510s in the Kitchen/BBQ table. 😁
