SOLO 70 year old travel gal took the 7 hr. ferry trip to The Rock with a rental car, then drove the entire East side to L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS, the 1,000 year old Norse settlement at the Northern fingertip of Newfoundland. Driving onto the ferry was a breeze, found a cushy recliner (no reservations at the time) and tried to catch a few winks. Later caught another ferry to Labrador and was so fascinated by the very different terrain and geology. Lovely people everywhere. Was in all Canadian Maritime Provinces in one trip. Highly recommended!
Just a note for Canadian veterans, with proof (CF1 card) you will save the passenger fee of $38 for yourself and up to three others each way. We were just in Newfoundland for three weeks early July, but not our first time. We have lived there and the grandkids are there as well.
The CF1 card has to have the "v" for veteran. Yes many working for DND agencies (as civilians) can get the CF1 card but it should not have the "V" in the lower right corner. For the ferry they check, and a few years ago I also had to provide my retired ID card. The airlines (at least in Ottawa) also caught on that CF1 did not automatically mean veteran and stopped the free bag if it did not have the "V". BTW my retired ID card really doesn't look like me anymore😁. From another crusty army WO!
@chrisxxx8685 haha thanks brother. Ya I didn't know they fixed that issue. In pet we had dependas running around getting discounts everywhere because of it 😆
Love the info , enthusiasm and charities of your channel. I am Canadian and in 2022 I, my wife and little Gidget (morkie) 2 yr old puppy did a cross Canada RV trip to Newfoundland and return from British Columbia in a Winnebago 29" Class C with a 4 down manual 2013 toyota matrix toad. Native of Nova Scotia, the only province or territory of Canada never visited was Newfoundland & Labrador. We chose to sail from North Sydney to Argentia with a cabin booked. The return passage was booked from Port aux Basque to North Sydney without a cabin. Met so many people that just wanted to sit and talk that day passages are a quick passage of time. This plan was to only have to drive the 1100 km Trans Canada hwy once across the province. We did not need/book a cabin on the return passage of 7 hours. We did book kennel for Gidget for the overnight passage to Argentia but at the last minute reading the fine print of the kennel arrangement we cancelled that booking. Gidget is very familiar with the RV and is also pad trained. Her pad is placed in the shower floor and she knows to do her business there. Unfortunately the passage extended to 22 hours due to a major gale preventing the docking at Argentia. My distraught wife concerned about Gidget convinced the Purser and Captain to allow her accompanied a visit to the lower deck to check on her dog. Gidget greeted the crew member at the driver side front window with such barking and aggression that all concluded that she was in great shape. The point of the feedback was that the $1,100 fare from North Sydney to Argentia is offset by the wear & tear, fuel, nightly accommodation cost and vacation time of having to do the Hwy 1 both ways. We did not find Hwy 1 an enjoyable ride for the most part because of the rough road conditions...at least for our rig.
I've not taken the ferry -- but I have visited NewfoundLAND (as it's pronounced according to my wife's cousin's -- on her Dad's side). My experience was GREAT. Of course, we were with family -- but, I feel like all visitors will feel the same. NewfoundLANDERS are just good people! And the scenery is spectacular! Our visit included a trip to St. Anthony -- waaaay up the western peninsula -- where our brother-in-law (married to my wife's sister) said (and he's quite poetic!) -- "I don't think this is the end of the world, but I believe I can see it from here." He's from Minnesota -- masters in the understatement -- so that speaks VOLUMES to usI I hope you guys got to see the Viking Settlement (it probably has a name -- but I sure don't remember it!) up near St. Anthony -- but whatever you DID see, I'm sure it was spectacular! My wife has cousins in St. Johns and Northern Arm (near Gander, where many planes were grounded during 9/11 and the passengers were housed by locals in the Gander area (that's just who NewfoundLANDers are!). Newfoundland is just one of those "special places" -- made special by the people!
Great video! Looking forward to seeing your adventures on “the rock”. I’m always amazed not just at the engineering and construction of those ships but the logistics of getting people and their vehicles on and off so efficiently and safely!
I've done both ferries. Our first trip to Newfoundland we only did the west coast over two weeks; arriving and departing from Port Aux Basques. Our departure was in late evening with arrival early the next morning. No rented cabin; we just did like the Newfies and grabbed a spot to take a nap wherever! On our second trip we went to Argentia to visit the east coast of Newfoundland and central Newfoundland before leaving from Port Aux Basques. Again we had no cabin. If you're lucky and its daytime you might get to see the islands of St-Pierre and Miquelon. The daytime is also great for looking for porpoises as they like to play in the ferries bow wave.
I used to work in driveaway, and some of my best Canadian trips were to Newfoundland. That was back when the Caribou and Smallwood ferries were in service. I always took the overnight ferry and rented a cabin to sleep. There was an exception to the driver logbook rules that allowed the off-duty rest period to legally be shortened to the length of this ferry ride. Trips were always drive up and fly back. Once I was snowbound in North Sydney, NS for nearly four days while blizzard winds exceeded Marine Atlantic's limits for sailing, but the hotel staff was great up on the hill overlooking the harbor. Add "fold mirrors after parking" to your ferry checklist if you drive a wide vehicle. I always did that on Marine Atlantic and BC Ferries.
Yes, I was on that ferry in the middle of winter. Got a stateroom below up forward. Was pleased because it was a 4 man stateroom but I had it all to myself. Quick shower and jumped into bed was asleep in seconds. Very comfortable. Then we left harbor and almost immediately started breaking ice. Holy shit the noise was deafening ! Yes, I learned the hard way...
I’m so thrilled to have been directed to your video as I’m planning our trip to NS and NL for summer 2024. This was a great video and I feel so confident now in booking our trip. We have a much smaller tug n tow, and its still costly, but this will a grand trip for these two Californians! Thank you, I’ll be subscribing to your channel to find out more!
Just made the same trip by bus and ferry this summer. The ferry operates from my home town. Great to see a fellow vet from down south travel our beautiful country. Thank you for your service.
Awesome vids guys, just came across your channel. I grew up 10 mintues from the ferry on the NS side. You did well to understand the Captain, a true Newfoundlander!!!
I’ve worked as a crew member on older ro-ro ferries between North Sydney and Newfoundland. A few time they hit the half hour before we even finished docking.
We did a 17 day bus tour of NFLD in 2019. It was great. Food was great. If you like Halibut ( should be Cod) and anything you will have a great dining experience.
As a Cape Bretoner, I grew up on cod and many other types of fish and seafood. Cod, mackeral, etc is harder to find today than when I was a kid. I may do some mackeral jigging of my own this summer. Great on the barbecue!
I just came back from NL, and I actually saw you guys on the road traveling between Port aux Basque and Corner Brook. I hope you enjoy your time there and make great memories.
Aw, love that you guys know that Canadians call Newfoundland ‘The Rock’. It’s on my bucket list! The only place we haven’t visited in the Maritimes. It’s interesting that you guys think of Newfoundland as a huge province- great to actually know how long you were there and will help to plan our trip. Newfoundland is quite a bit smaller than most of the provinces in Canada, but what you’ve said makes sense re touring, not every province is as picturesque, and so wouldn’t require as much time -although quite a few are blessed with incredible natural beauty.
That is cool to see the videos. One of the things that I didn't get to do when I was in the Navy was to be stationed on a ship. Being a new corpsman I was always at a hospital or clinic. Then when I went through 8404 school I was with the Marines still on land. I always love your videos
Thank you for serving the best service! I honor your service as a corpsman ! This Navy wife & Navy daughter spent many an hour & days in Navy hospitals (patient, volunteer & paid civilian) and I loved working with all the Corpsmen…. Even in Adak😉 Blessings
There is a third option for a ferry that is from Labrador to the Northern Peninsula and only takes about two hours, we have been on all three on our motorcycle over the years. I find for day time crossing the reserved seating gives us enough of a home base to leave our belongings without the cabin option. Night time crossings we always take a cabin so we can have some quality sleep.
We have reserved a place on a 59 day Adventure Caravans tour of Gaspe and the Atlantic Provinces next summer. We’re taking the overnight ferry to Argentia going, and the shorter ferry to North Sydney returning. Adventure Caravans is reserving us a cabin that allows pets on the overnight crossing, so we’ll have our seven year old, 80 lbs. rescue dog, Ollie, with us. We’re really looking forward to this trip, especially because this summer we’re stuck in Florida because I had spine surgery in May.
Love you guys ! You're the cutest pair ! ❤ Glad you enjoyed Newfoundland, it's on my bucket list ! Hope you ride back through Québec, our beautiful province.
That is useful information and true. My sister-in-law whose parents were Newfoundlanders, but she never been there, was shocked a few years ago when one of the ferries had a mishap and the Argentia ferry was put into service on the Port-aux-Basques run. She couldn't believe that people on the East coast of Newfoundland could lose their ferry service like that. LOLOL! You get soft in Ontario. However, with Ford at the helm we'll have to develop some muscle pretty shortly.
When a friend of mine was on one of the ferry they used a laser to measure them. You are right they take the propane issue very seriously. They can check because there is no lock on the compartment the propane is in. Before you head south you should check out Roosevelt Campobello International Park. You can stay at Seaview Campground & Cottages. The most down East campground in the US.
So, so helpful to see the deal with the ferry. Thank you! We by-passed NL this time because of their lack of Tesla superchargers, but we'll get there on another trip. Meanwhile, we're in Quebec City enjoying the sites here. The three maritime provinces all had English and French and now it's just French. So, Google Translate helps out a lot!
Your comments are very informative for people travelling to Newfoundland via either ferry, Note: there is also another Ferry from the island to Labrador.
just returned from 10 days in NFLD and spending time with someone very special . The rock is the last province either of us has ever visited and was so worth it. Without a doubt I wasted many years not visiting this amazing province and I am planning a subsequent trip when possible . Wonderful people ,sights, excellent highways , good food and the only thing we didn't do was see icebergs ( too late in the year ). Next time in mid to late June.
Thanks for this video. We're headed to Gros Morne for 9 nights next week and couldn't find any pics of the reserved seats we will have. At least we get to see some of them and where it is....all the other info is so appreciated. Well done video....thank you....happy travels...
Great video and great tips for anyone traveling there. A lot to plan for, travel and expenses. If an unprepared soul decided to just go without researching, could be in for big surprise . I agree with ya'll, the cabin would definitely be worth it. Would make the trip more enjoyable to stretch out and relax. I bet the next video will be better than expected. God bless ya'll and stay safe on your travels.
That's funny. 12:25 on the video you are behind a trailer from British Columbia Canada, Arbutus RV which is on Vancouver Island, and Courtenay area, where I live. I did both ferries to Newfoundland last August.
Thanks for the great video. We are planning a trip to the Rock in our motorhome and were going for 21 days but now I think we will make it 28 days. Thanks again.
Afraid the last time I took a ferry was from Bandirma to Tekirdag Turkey by bus then on to the international airport in Istanbul on my way back to the states. I was stationed at a remote site in Turkey while in the USAF. The bus ride from the town outside the site to Bandirma was 8hrs, then another 3-4 on the ferry, then another couple of hours to the airport. In all it took 24 hrs to reach my destination (Orlando FL). Did this 4 times round trip. Have to say I had many adventures while serving in the USAF and would do it again in a minute! Cheers Retired E7
Thank you for this informative video. I appreciate how clear and concise the two of you are, not to mention entertaining. :) I enjoy watching your travels. Was that in American money or Canadian money?
Just a heads up for any folks thinking about this this year, they just got a brand new boat. They're still shaking it down atm, but it should be ready in July. It's for the Argentia run and is the 16 hour trip. The boats roughly the same size as the other boats, but they have more rooms and a lot more pet-friendly rooms now.
We also went to Newfoundland this summer so you can imagine my surprise as I'm watching you go back to your RV and I see my car parked a couple rows over from your RV. We had an awesome 10 days on The Rock and hopefully people watching these videos will get a small taste of it's beauty. Cheers from Nova Scotia!
Live in Washington State so used to ferries, but took 27' travel trailer to San Juan's and on the return we had to BACK onto the ferry to the end, around the divider and back down the other side because that ferry stops at multiple islands on the way back to Anacortes. Good thing my son in law was driving because he zipped right through the process. Would have taken me hours, which is why I now drive a motorhome :-) Sure enjoy your travels!!
I watched one of your previous videos in which you had the power cable from your rv to the toad come off and get dragged and damaged. I meant to comment on that video but can’t find it now. Anyway, I was concerned that would happen to us, so I started zip tying the cord on each end. I put a zip tie around the cord and then another to the rv and toad and tied them together. Just a suggestion if you haven’t already thought of it. Totally enjoy your channel. We are several weeks behind you in our travels from Florida to Nova Scotia and PEI. Your videos have been greatly informative.
Back in 2011 we drove out to St John's Newfoundland and did the night crossing so we made progress during the night. We had to park almost all the way at the bottom level with our van and the top was full of trucks. On the way back it was almost empty for the night trip. Absolutely beautiful Province and we hope to travel back and explore more of the area.
That's a lot more than I expected of a ferry. Also didn't realize the distance involved. Much nicer, safer & more comfortable that the only ferry I've ever been on. It crossed the Mississippi River somewhere north of Quincy, IL. It was a temporary thing because of a bridge repair. My 70' semi had to be loaded front left (bow port) corner to right rear (stern starboard) corner to fit. And it sat low in the water with my 77,000 lb rig on it! No racks, seating or restrooms.
We reserved Sydney to Argentia onto the rock and Port Aux Basque to Sydney returning today. The availability of some sailings was limited or full for the end of June or early July. This dictated our choice of routes. Your great video “gives shy people the strength to get up and do what needs to be done.” (An homage to Prairie Home Companion)
Thank you so much, you explained the travel to and from my home province great and yes it isn't cheap but well worth it..:D if i do say so...Also for future reference or anyone reading who wants a little different adventure you may also drive up the Northern Peninsula and take a ferry across to Labrador which is a part of NL and drive across and down through Quebec FYI..hehe Personally I would take the argentia ferry if I were visiting just because of the back tracking of Highway and taking in the cost of fuel and time its not that much difference and could get you a few more days somewhere that you fall in love with. Thank you Phil and Stacy
Great stuff!! Love the ending song…that song was in the fist video I saw of you guys on April 19, 2019! I have it on my playlist and always think of that first video I saw about full time RVing and got me hooked!
Good pic guys. We've been there and done that. Great holiday. Fly and rent a car or take your own which is better in the long run. Take the overnite ferry to Argentia (near St Johns), travel around the island and then back on the day ferry from Port Aux Bas. Another great place to go in Canada. Book well ahead as it's becoming a popular thing to do.
Crazy how nice theyve gotten since my time in the 90s going home from CFB Gagetown NB. Beats the old Sir Robert Bond for sure. Dont miss the 10 hour road race Port Aux Basques to St Johns. Hope you enjoyed my home.
I remember one trip to Port-aux-Basques where the reception took my bag and I thought I'd claim on board ship, but no such luck. I couldn't get my bag back till I arrived in Port-aux-Basques. The reception said there was no cabins for the overnight crossing, but didn't say you didn't get your bag back either. Crazy! I think that was during the gens de l'air strike and nothing was flying so the lounge was full of people and even crying babies who wouldn't have been there if the air traffic controllers in Quebec weren't on strike.
@@dinkster1729 Thats the old days, eh? The reclining chairs were first come, first served so people would book it up there. When the Joseph and Clara Smallwood came in , it was the lap of luxury, now these are almost cruise ships! Price isn't too bad either but should be free. Oh well, the Rock got screwed there.
Are there videos of your trip, or do you just offer tips for rv'ers? . We're new to the channel and were looking forward to seeing your trip highlights. Friendly bit of advice, Newfoundland is pronounced New- fun- land. All the best!
Very nice video, thank you. I’ve only been to Newfoundland on a short business trip so didn’t see much of it, although we did manage a short bus ride from St. John’s to Bay Bulls for a whale 🐋 watching excursion. A passenger got queasy so we couldn’t go far enough to find whales ☹️. But to make it up to us, the Captain took us very close to some icebergs, which were absolutely spectacular. The turquoise colours towards the centres of the bergs just glowed, it was a truly spectacular thing to witness so close. Looks like I need to go back, with my car, and explore the whole province! .
I went camping in the back of my Ford Custom in the summer of 1977--it was great! Bonne Bay, Gros Morne, the Grey Islands. I was living in St John's at the time so I'd seen the Avalon Penninsula previously. I'm sitting here thinking that i'll just load up my old Safari, take out the bucket seats and leave my husband here in Kingston and go explore Newfoundland for a couple of weeks. Relive old times. My husband is a stick in the mud. He wouldn't want to go.
Great info for our next trip to that region of Canada. Wayyyyyyyyyy cheaper then trying to take the Hydrofoil Ferry from Bar Harbor to Halifax. Appreciate the video of driving on and off the ferry's and navigating through the terminals.
Is that $1,000 American or Canadian. I remember hitchhiking from Kingston, Ontario to St John's with $13 in my pocket. I still had $8 left when I arrived in St John's. May, 1970. I think the passage was $5 and I slept in the chairs which were comfortable enough.
Everytime I cross over on the ferry into Newfoundland I get this happy feeling as if I am home.

Thats stupid. Anyone can get a CF1 card. You don't need to be a vet. They should only accept the NDI20 or retired I'd card.

What great experiences riding the ferries! Thanks for sharing! 😊
Just made the same trip by bus and ferry this summer. The ferry operates from my home town. Great to see a fellow vet from down south travel our beautiful country. Thank you for your service.
We took the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria BC and it was amazing! Only a 90min trip well worth it 🙏❤🙏 love your video, so fun!

Thanks for the video! I have always flown to Newfoundland so it was good to get an idea of the ferry trip!

We took the ferry into Victoria and out to catch the Cassier Hwy on up to Alaska! What an incredible trip that was!

Love you guys ! You're the cutest pair ! ❤ Glad you enjoyed Newfoundland, it's on my bucket list ! Hope you ride back through Québec, our beautiful province.
I live in north Sydney! Love meeting tourists that come through
The Argentia ferry only operates a few months in the summer and stops about mid September....the usual route is Port aux Basques.
We just got back from the maritimes..Cabin wzs so much fun and relaxing.
How you enjoyed your visit to our beautiful province
I love that you are pronouncing Argentia correctly.
I worked in St. Johns for a week and a half. Took a day to drive around the east side north to south. It is a big island. Sen a few cool sights.
Thanks for this video. We're headed to Gros Morne for 9 nights next week and couldn't find any pics of the reserved seats we will have. At least we get to see some of them and where it is....all the other info is so appreciated. Well done video....thank you....happy travels...
Have fun! We have a travel guide that we hope to populate on our website by next week; Todayissomeday.net. Keep an eye out for it.
Thanks for helpful information form Ukrainian newcomers
That First harvest host location looked gorgeous and the hosts absolutely Wonderful
They were 100% AWESOME!!!
Awesome review of the cruise to Newfoundland . Can't wait for the next chapter.
There is a Campground in Argentia right near the ferry dock with pull through sites.
Absolutely!
That's funny. 12:25 on the video you are behind a trailer from British Columbia Canada, Arbutus RV which is on Vancouver Island, and Courtenay area, where I live. I did both ferries to Newfoundland last August.
Great information! It’s like you two have a teleprompter! Can’t wait to see the trip videos
LOL.....just a lot of do overs before we get it right.
Niiiice Stateroom 👍🇺🇲🇨🇦 Glad I found your channel. Looking forward for more videos.
Welcome aboard!
Thanks for the great video. We are planning a trip to the Rock in our motorhome and were going for 21 days but now I think we will make it 28 days. Thanks again.
Prices haven’t changed a lot since I was there 5 years ago. I absolutely love the Canadian Ferry system.
I have not been on the ferry crossing since 2000 (Sydney/port aux Basques )
HOPE TO SEE YOU ON THE ROAD
Thanks for sharing great video, I like that you included the prices!
Thanks for taking us along!
Our pleasure!
US currency.
Thank you for all the information , we are thinking of going there in June 2024, very helpful.
Its a great trip! Totally worth it!
That is very cool!
Thanks for the video. We are planning to do this ferry next year. So helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks. Yes, great tip! I am doing that goin forward. Have fun!!
Exteremly helpful information thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for taking the trip and sharing the information 💁♀️ 😊
Our pleasure!
That's crazy!
NL was an amazing trip - you're going to love it!
Welcome to Canada. Next time you may want to try the west coast and rocky mountains. Banff up to Jasper on hwy 93 is breath taking.
Thanks for the tips!
Welcome to my home. My family is from Norris Arm. Just outside Lewisport.
Havent been home in 27yrs.
Great video and good info. Looking forward to seeing the video next week.
Thanks 👍
they were asking me the same root vegetable question 40 years ago.
That is awesome!!!
Very informative video and symphatic authors - as always.
Looking forward to your in-Province NFLD tour video on "The Rock". - Cheers!
Great info and great timing. I’m heading there in a few weeks with a dog. Safe travels!!!
Have fun!
Thank you so much, you explained the travel to and from my home province great and yes it isn't cheap but well worth it..:D if i do say so...Also for future reference or anyone reading who wants a little different adventure you may also drive up the Northern Peninsula and take a ferry across to Labrador which is a part of NL and drive across and down through Quebec FYI..hehe
Personally I would take the argentia ferry if I were visiting just because of the back tracking of Highway and taking in the cost of fuel and time its not that much difference and could get you a few more days somewhere that you fall in love with. Thank you Phil and Stacy
Plus, the Argentia Port-aux-Basques run is like a mini-cruise.
Great stuff!! Love the ending song…that song was in the fist video I saw of you guys on April 19, 2019! I have it on my playlist and always think of that first video I saw about full time RVing and got me hooked!
Awesome! Thank you!
I’ve been on 2 ferries. One across the Irish Sea from Ireland to Wales. The other one was across the English Channel.
Hope you have videos coming of your time on the island.
We do. Stay tuned.
Thanks for the video and it's NEW-FOUND-LAND, just likes it's spelled. Cheers.
Yes, we will have our first video out this Sunday. There was too much to pack into one video.
😅That's my pink car loll 🎉❤ oh hey Rilo 😂☺️🐶🐕
It was a sweet paint job! Your pup was just happy people were coming back.
It's actually vinyl-wrapped. And there were two dogs in the car but the other one is sweet and quiet lol
Looks like I need to go back, with my car, and explore the whole province! .
We will go back for sure!! You won't regret it.
Awesome tips. I’m so glad we found you two!!! You’ve inspired us to follow our dreams!!
Welcome aboard! When will your SOMEDAY be?
@@todayissomeday trying for May 1st 2024.
Not long now. Have fun! Hope to see ya out here in the wild soon!
did that in the Mid 70's i was 12, Mother, Step-Father, older Sister, we were camping in a tent trailer had nightmares for years after that
I went camping in the back of my Ford Custom in the summer of 1977--it was great!
@@dinkster1729 we were used to KOA campsites, there were none in NFLD
This is just like the beautiful ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver Island BC.
