The reason why we use Numbers instead of just the Actual button lay out, is because it's suppose to be a "Universal button language", so that BOTH PS3 AND 360 users will be able to understand from the same video. (which makes it much smarter). Maybe some may think it looks complicated at first, but ;) to make it easier for you, just try to memorize it as easy as possible in your head - whenever you see numbers from 1-4.
Oh, and one more thing! If you're a typical veteran MK player (like I am) and are familiar with the 3 first classic MK games, then you'll know that we never, nor now uses the "number" system - at all! Instead, what MK games has always been used for with the control/attack system, is: LP, HP, LK, HK (Low/High Punch/Kick). Or, as they've changed it to now - in MK9: Front/Back Punch/Kick.
