I stopped at the visitor centre en route to Washington Dulles airport, after struggling to find it with a sat-nav that refused to talk to me.
Interesting experience; Marland never heard such swearing as this Limey uttered during that journey.
A very welcome break, a grand little museum, and a nice autumn walk around the closest field before continuing to Washington and ditching that !!!!!!!!!!! car.

I was at the morning program. Man, it was hot out, so I can't imagine how hot the afternoon walk was. Ranger Brian is awesome and entertaining.

I wished all Yankees would listen to the "turning the war from 'save the Union' to a righteous war." Lincoln had to do this to keep the foreign countries from joining the souths effort for independence. People don't see the real reason for Lincoln pushing for war. It didn't start out to end slavery.

I think you'll find that Lincoln didn't push for war, but had it pushed upon him by immoral people whom wouldn't compromise. For decades, everytime the south didn't get there way in congress, they would threaten secession. They wouldn't even listen to their own brethren and even try to keep the Union together.
With the efforts of the copperheads and the radical republicans, this country was doomed to bloodshed.
The sad part is that little has changed.
I'm a no compromises patriot and just twenty-five years ago, I was not welcome in the south. It's sad the hatred and bitterness continues.

The South's stated reason for leaving the union was to preserve and protect the institution of slavery, which they realized was on borrowed time due to geographical and population expansion.
