    Summary: A princess from a small Himalayan country becomes possessed by the spirit of a Venusian (a Martian in the American version) and escapes a plane just as it explodes. As this happens a meteorite falls from the sky containing Ghidorah, the monster responsible for her planet's destruction. At the same time, Godzilla and Rodan emerge from hibernation and not only attack Japan, but each other as well. Mothra, along with its twin priestesses, attempt to convince Godzilla and Rodan to stop their fighting each other and to team up to fight the new monster. At the same time, the princess is being hunted by a group of assassins who want to kill her so that her enemies can take over her homeland.

    The fiery debut of Ghidorah, the ULTIMATE villain of the Godzilla series!

  • @jasonpratt5126
    @jasonpratt5126 3 года назад +8

    Having seen the original Japanese version -- nope, the princess being apparently saved by a flying saucer still happens and still goes nowhere. (The alien civilization was from Venus not from Mars in the original.) And the American International editing tightens up the pacing considerably, solving a few plot problems along the way! If I recall correctly, Honda himself praised the American edit.

    I unapologetically love this movie, faults and all. And by all means do another Godzilla review, maybe follow this up Godzilla vs Monster Zero or Destroy all Monsters, or even Godzilla vs King Ghidorah. Or go completely wacky with Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. As always, love the content. Please keep it up. 😁

    Princess Selina's full name Mars Dourina Salno is a play on Japanese phrase "Maa, sudoori nasaruno" that translates to "Are you just going to pass me by ?" one of many script writer Shigeru Kayama's in-jokes he embedded throughout his movies

    I love this one - it's very much a modern day fairy tale in scifi trappings, and the humans are actually pretty fun

    I am admittedly a complete Godzilla Geek and find this film to be one of the most superior of the franchise. Both the human and kaiju plots are engaging and since it's how I first experienced the film, the dub is terrific albeit both unintentionally hilarious and ominous at times. Great review.

    The "Godzilla" series, with the exception of the 1954 original, were never really meant to be taken seriously, and I like it that way. Gimme the rubber monster suits, toy tanks & bad Japanese dubbing any day!

    • @District9Prawn
      @District9Prawn 5 лет назад +7

      Nah there's a few entries peppered here and there (like the original Mothra vs Godzilla, Shin Godzilla, and GMK) that try to take themselves seriously but not to the degree that the original did.

    • @kashsmith6181
      @kashsmith6181 3 года назад +2

      @@District9Prawn Well, Shin took its symbolism and horrific element seriously, but it was also made to be a satirical criticism of the Japanese government from a Japanese perspective. This is why some of the more "bizarre" moments are lost on western audience members. Such as the helicopter needing to ask permission to shoot Godzilla, which is in reference to the government's need to go through many different committees and organizations to get anything done.

    • @varanid9
      @varanid9 3 года назад

      @@kashsmith6181 During the Vietnam war, my brother-in-law told me of a U.S. army outpost that got wiped out by a VC unit when another U.S. unit that had spotted them earlier and had them in their sights was denied permission to fire upon them. I understand there were similar rules of engagement in Iraq. I'd posit that the helicopter scene might not have been satire so much as an accurate depiction of governmental red tape.

  • @mgkiryuu

    Good review. Shame the movie was so fast tracked into production and came out the same year as Mothra vs Godzilla. Still....it is one of my favorites of the series. It just felt so big and gigantic. Strangely enough....it felt bigger in scope than Monster Zero did. And that one was an all out war on Earth.
    I would love to see you do another incredible in depth look into Godzilla 1985...sort of like how you did the original 54. It makes sense....since both of those films are pretty much the start of each of their timeline series. And there is a lot to talk about in 85 with it's history and effects and all the Cold War stuff. Mini reviews are great but man I do love listening to some of your well scripted discussion stuff. Some of the stuff you were talking about in your Kwaidan and Onibaba review was really interesting. Actually made me seek out the movies and buy them :)

    Best scene in the movie: Mothra having decided to face Ghidorah alone, crawls past Rodan and Godzilla, who turn and silently watch the Very Brave Caterpillar march her way to her death... again.... again... again? Wait, let me figure this out, the caterpillar twin died, the old moth died and whatever laid that first egg died.
    OK, to be fair, Mothra dies a lot in this series so it's hard to take "heroic sacrifice" seriously when it's more like a Pokemon attack. "Mothra used Glory of the Moth. It was... alright I guess."

    I honestly do believe that the Showa Godzilla series was at its best when Ishiro Honda was directing (with the exception of All Monsters Attack).
    Even though he had his disagreements with Toho and Tomoyuki Tanaka about lightening the tone, Honda always strived to make his Godzilla films about more than just the monster action and delivered simple, but compelling plots with proactive characters and relevant themes. Even All Monsters Attack (Godzilla's Revenge), as bad as it is, has some decent direction during some of the human scenes and at least has its heart in the right place with the boy Ichiro's story (albeit with poor execution).

    theory/ godzilla picks up and hurls rocks in this movie, i think he learnt that in his battle wh kong, in that movie and the previous ones he was more dinosaurlike with stiff arms and nowhere in his fight with kong did he pick up projectiles or use his hands much, i reckon he picked up that ability from the battle

    The Japanese doesn't clear up the princess confusion any better. They still rely on a version of that wormhole explanation for her rescue. The biggest difference is that she's from Venus, not Mars. Anyway, I'm glad you didn't trash this one because it's a favorite for me.

    I prefer the U.S. version. However...3 things do bug me about it. 1--Why was shots of Rodan added when we see Godzilla rising from the sea & destroying the boat? 2--Why did they do such a sloppy editing job when Godzilla finally makes landfall? First he's out of the water & then he's back in the water & then he's out of the water again. 3--Why doesn't the martian lady say "King Ghidorah"? Her lip movement would have been easy to dub since that is what she is actually saying.

    • @toughbutsweet1
      @toughbutsweet1 3 года назад

      1. Godzilla came because he sensed Rodan had emerged, and Rodan was just basically trash talking by doing his fly-by. 2. Yeah, maybe he climbed over a dock? 3. If her planet was destroyed, why would she demonstrate respect and call it a king? Also, isn't royalty a human creation? Cheers!

  • @andrewparsons2391

    I'm guessing that this review is in honor of the quasi-remake coming out this week?
    This is the first Godzilla movie I ever owned, on VHS, back when I was still in the single digits (King Kong vs Godzilla and Godzilla vs Megalon were the second and third respectively), and it's still one of my favorites. I'd probably put in my Top 5 Best Overall Godzilla movies, and definitely in my Top 5 Best Showa Godzilla movies. The original is top of both lists of course, just because I enjoy cheese doesn't mean I can't recognize true quality when I see it.
    Hmm, I'd suggest Godzilla vs Megalon for review. It's not as WTF as Smog Monster but pretty silly/meant for kids. If you'd prefer more serious fare, what about 1984/5's Return of Godzilla, the first Hesei Godzilla movie. It's a reboot that returned the monster to his roots as a quasi-horrific force of nature who hated humans.

    Thank you for this review - I completely forgot about this film's existence, and its many virtues and flaws in relation to the Showa era and Godzilla as a whole.
    I personally don't mind that there was no Godzilla review last year, but I love the franchise so much that I would absolutely love to see you guys look into more of it. For what you should do, I'd definitely say any of the Jun Fukuda films from the Showa era - _Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla_ - or maybe one of the weaker Heisei era film to switch things up, like _Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla_ (which I know sort of exceeds the time range of the channel, but it's still laughably bad and a Godzilla movie so I think it'd be worth it).
