The "US version" on the Classic Media DVD is a reconstruction. It takes the Japanese visuals and edits it to fit the English audio, along with the English language credits from a source I'm not familiar with. That's why the Toho logo is there. Must have been an oversight.

I was just wondering "Was there a third version?" because I don't remember some of these changes, especially the music ones.
However, it goes back to my VHS Video Treasure copy of Ghidrah which I believe is the same as the Classic Media DVD.
4:17 THAT, I never that in any of my copies.
From IMDB: "Much of Akira Ifukube's score for this film is replaced in the American version." Don't you just love accurate archivists? "There's just one American version, our work is done."

0:11 Three Giant Monsters: The Greatest Battle on Earth. This is the first time I've ever heard this. I thought the Japanese version was called the Ghidorah, the three-headed monster in Japan and Ghidrah in The US.

    • @scaper8

I have heard that title before, but not too often. I think that Toho now uses _Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster_ themselves as well, so that's why it's not a common name.

    • @ChadHolzhuter1288
      @ChadHolzhuter1288 4 года назад +2

Its still "3 Giant Monsters.." in Japan. Most people who speak English just simply refer to it by its American title. I imagine, since it takes less time to say.

@@ChadHolzhuter1288 well Toho decided to give the film the “Ghidorah, the Three-Header Monster” title for international release but it is possible that they just took the American name (just adding the “O” in Ghidorah), as the original international title was “Monster of Monsters, Ghidorah” as seen on Toho’s VHS

Excellent work. I would just like to add that in the American version, when Godzilla appears in Yokohama, his entrance was re-edited so first he's on land, then in the water, then back on land! Looking forward to future reviews.

I think the sequence of events flows better in the American version, even though I prefer the Japanese dialog. Also, there are moments when the stock music enhances the atmosphere. For instance, Godzilla's first appearance is greatly enhanced, with the ambience of the stock soundtrack leading into Ifukube's bombastic theme. The same goes for Ghidrah's first appearance. I love the way the stock soundtrack helps build up to Ifukube's score

Another fun video! Unfortunately, the US release opens with Ifukube's music, but instead of the Toho logo, there's the Walter Reade Organization logo. For the Classic Media release, Toho added their logo instead of the Walter Reade logo. Red Menace's reconstruction remedies this over CM's. The US ending card in your video is not the original (see Red Menace version). Why was much of Ifukube's score removed? That was due to all of the recutting and rearranging of scenes from the Japanese version. Toho mixed these films with two tracks. One is the dialogue. The other is Music & (Sound) Effects. In the 1960s, it would've been expensive to have Toho provide separate M and E tracks. So, it was cheaper to wipe and add stock sound. Or take sound effects from scenes without music and use them in the re-edited scenes as needed.

One of my favorite Showa era fairs, kind of a white noise for me actually love the American version right down Italian accents (apparent when villagers are fleeing
the hills towards the end) there were editing issues that always made me wonder like when rodan emerges from crater you can hear Godzilla’s roar for hot second
and when Godzilla rises from ocean to attack Tokyo he appears in a medium shot then a far away shot then mid way shot again. And two of his night walking shots
are looped. But despite all of this l respect l think it depends on the studio when it comes to not using Akita’s theme music a sad lost in any case. I love what you do.
It’s a labor of love and research I’m sure Thanks.

In the sub titled version I saw recently the Princess claimed to have come from Jupiter, which is really not much better than Venus if you're talking about planets that can support life. Also the title of the movie was Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster. The siblings calling each other by last names is weird, in that culture you would usually call people by their last name, not their first name unless you were close friends or you were relatives. I'm guessing the person doing the sub was confused by this.

It is known that Ishirō Honda preferred the American cut as it made the story more fluid and tightens plot holes that Big-G could walk through. Especially the continuity with the researchers among others. Love the dubbed versions of these movies as they are much better quality than current Godzilla movies have. It is too bad they messed with the ost, but that is usually due to the cuts. I prefer the American cut to the original as there are plot holes and boring parts that did not move the story forward.

Okay, I've got to put my foot down about this pronunciation. If you listen to the original Japanese -- which I have -- yes, it's true that "Ghidorah" has three syllables -- in the same way That "Gojirah" has three syllables. But in exactly the same way, the emphasis is on the FIRST SYLLABLE. GHI-dorah. GO-jirah.
This whence comes this grotesque and bizarre -- and now universally accepted mispronunciation -- and yes, it is a mispronuciation, in exactly the same way that Godzilla is a mispronunciation of Gojira.
It undoubtedly comes from the truly rancid junior high level dubbing (and scripting) of the Heisei era Godzilla movies. I suspect that somewhere along the line, in the first of these features that features Ghidorah, when it came time to do the dubbing, no one had ever seen any of the earlier movies and probably no one in the studio even spoke Japanese and somebody said -- how do you pronounce this word -- and some knuckle-dragging moron -- oh, I'm sorry, I mean the dubbing director said, duh, I guess, uh "ghiDORah" -- thus memorializing a truly moronic mispronunciation for the ages.
    Okay, rant over.
    For now.

Japanese speak very quickly and do not enunciate their consonants very strongly.. So even if the word Ghidorah is written in 3 symbol pattern in Japanese it would be said quickly and sound like a two syllable word. Either Giddra or Geedra
