I think of life as any organism that solves problems. Coming at this from the “purpose in biology” framework, I want to know how it works (if we can figure that out). I’m not terrified of teleology / teleonomy or what have you. In fact, I’m already sold on it. This acknowledgment doesn’t really drive to theism tho, because cancer has this agential aspect too.
