The Thing is a great movie but at the same time I don't like body-horror mainly because I watched this movie when I was 8 years old, at night and alone.
Back in 1979 I was underage so I couldn't watch Alien in a theater. So the next day my Dad took me out for a drive and told me the entire story in glorious detail! Fortunately he purchased a Sony Betamax player and Alien was one of the first releases in that format. My father and I camped out in the living room that night to watch Alien....we slept in sleeping bags on the floor. What an experience at the time. One of my happiest memories. 😊
"In space, no one can hear you scream!" This was the advertisement tagline for "Alien". Alien & Aliens always reminded me of Terminator & Terminator 2: The first movie is more suspenseful, and the second movie is more of an action movie. The rest of the franchise is no where near the quality of the first two movies. We also get two incredible Badass characters as well. Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connors.
This makes my year. I saw this in the theater in 1979. I was 13. It changed my life. People screamed and ran out of the theater and into the bathroom to throw up. It was amazing. I never thought it would be Ripley. I thought it was gonna be Parker right up till he was killed.
Fun fact, except for John Hurt, they didnt tell the actors what was going to happen when the alien came out. They thought he was going to act sick and die. It was their real reactions.
Except that in order to have the alien pop out of his chest, they had to have a prosthetic body for it to pop out of. Hard to believe the rest of the cast would miss the setup necessary for that.
What they didn't tell the cast was how 'graphic' it was going to be. The blood spray was kept secret and Ms. Cartwright's reaction was real when she was sprayed by the 'blood'.
This movie never stopped being big, it is considered to be one of the best movies of all time and one of the most influential pieces of media in history, and with good reason!, it is amazing.
Alien was Sigourney Weaver first big role. Aliens made her an action hero icon. Also, this movie was directed by Ridley Scott (also did Gladiator & Blade Runner) and Aliens is directed by James Cameron (terminator movies and avatar), so when you eventually watch the second one, that's why the style will feel a bit different.
I'm kinda new to your channel and I just wanna say your mom seems very sweet. Just about every video I watch I wanna give her a hug. It's great you are all so close and spend this time together. Best wishes to you all.
Ripley, Sarah Connor and Princess Leia were all huge crushes for me as a young boy. They're great examples of strong characters, and Ripley and Sarah Connor's arch in their respective universe is so cool to see, especially comparing them to the beginning of their original films, ex. the original Terminator and Alien, and seeing how their characters progressed into part 2. Also, what I love about these older horror movies are the lack of jump scares. There's the one part where the Alien gets Dallas in the vents, but other than that, a lot of it is tension building. It's why I love the older horror movies. They don't rely on cheesy jump scares. Glad you ladies enjoyed it! Definitely a classic. Should watch Aliens next :)
6:25 "He should be in quarantine. He should be away from everyone" This quote aged well :D Love your reactions to all my fav movies. I was skeptical at first due to other" reaction channels" but you guys have such genuine reactions and conversations about them.
I get such a guilty pleasure when you ladies react to the jump scares, I laugh so hard lol! so glad you finally watched this classic, this movie changed the face of sci-fi horror in cinema history! there's even a director's cut of this film that answers some of the questions you ladies asked, like what happened to Dallas! the spider like alien is called a Face-hugger, the baby Alien is called a chest burster, and the android Ash is actor Ian Holm, whom you may recognize as old Bilbo Baggins in LOTR and The Hobbit! H.R. Giger is the one who designed the Alien and let alone the Alien is called a Xenomorph! now you all need to watch the second film Aliens, it's the best one! watch the director's cut of that one as well! OH GOSH, I cannot believe your mom did that LOL! thank you for posting this, loved your reactions and your comments about the movie! 😁
Oh My Goodness, YES!~ The Xenomorph is my absolute favorite sci-fi monster of all time. You should react to the rest of the franchise!~ I know most of the community aren't very fond of the movies past the second one, but I actually do like them. I'm in the minority, I know, but, hey, there's just a hidden charm to them that I like!~
OmegaChimera I like em too, particularly the 3rd one, which most people really dislike. I think the 1st two films are considerably better than the last two, but it doesn’t stop me from enjoying the hell out of them 🙂
I don't LOVE Alien3, but I appreciate what the director accomplished (and tried to accomplish) despite the catastrophically mismanaged production. However, I don't know if I wanna watch a reaction to it. All the tragedy in Chernobyl was hard enough on them (and, subsequently, me).
ScreamingScallop Alien3 was a shitshow from what I’ve heard. And I’d be fine if they only reacted to the 1st two movies. 3 & Resurrection could be skipped unless, for some reason, they really get into the series.
6:35 - I was about 12 when I saw this in theaters when it first came out (a very irresponsible adult took me and a friend) and I have a very vivid memory of the audience reaction at the chest bursting scene: several loud screams at first, then after the baby alien hissed and zoomed across the table, several people laughed hysterically (partly laughing at their friends who had just been screaming and partly at the hissing alien). Good times. (By the way, that's John Hurt/Magic Wand Salesman from Harry Potter in case you didn't recognize him.)
Mr. Olivander. Also: Chancellour Sutler from "V for Vendetta" or Winston Smith from "1984" or Aragorn in the 1978 "Lord of the Rings" or Trevor Buttonholm in the "Hellboy" movies.
That was a great reaction. The movie is so well made in every way. 2:50 'There's a cat, I like this movie. As long as it survives.' And then 10:35 the scariest part of the movie... ;) 10:49 "You and me against the world." :D 11:23 Plot twist: the cat is the alien...! :)
Brilliant ground breaking film! Saw this when it first came out and was captivated by the design. And can we take a moment to reflect on the stellar caste? Not only Sigourney Weaver at the start of her career, but some of the greatest actors of the last 50 years- John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton and Ian Holm.
I absolutely love that your mom participates in this. I would have given anything to have my mom share movies with me, but she was too serious minded for anything that wasn’t a documentary and she had little patience for them. However, her favorite movie was dumb and dumber. I was so shocked when I found that out. She watched it 7 times.
Since you're an artist yourself you might enjoy looking up H.R. Giger - one of his paintings, titled "Necronom IV", inspired the look of the Alien and he was recruited to work on the film.
Omg, you are doing my favourite movies! Lotr, Gladiator and now Alien! This was my absolute favourite when I was young... well almost a child actually. Scared me, gave me nightmares, but still loved it!Actually this was the first move I couldn't finish watching when they aired it on tv and had to rent it and watch it during the day. Because... reasons. The Alien movies and The X-files were iconic for me at that period during the 90s. Strong female characters, sci-fi and horror... Brilliant.
I saw this in San Francisco in 1979 when it came out. I was in the Navy...and went with a friend to a 70mm Dolby theater. This is one of only, maybe, 3 films that ever terrified me
From what I heard, they set up the whole chest burst scene without the other actors present. They were told there would be special effects happening and to try to react without breaking character. So the initial shock on their faces was pretty much real.
3:49, Ridley Scott told none of the cast, except John Hurt who plays Kane, about the chestbursted scene during dinner, so that was genuine fear from the other cast members. 5:08, KY jelly was used for the alien's slime.
"Earthlings are going to meet an alien and it's not gonna come out very nice." Kim's already figured it out as always 😂 FYI *Dragonheart* is coming to Netflix in January, the really awesome one with Sean Connery and Dennis Quaid!
I wouldn't say better. Both are very good but incomparable because they can be seen as being different sub genres of SF horror (Aliens obviously being action)
Debatable. I'd say "Alien" is better because it's harder to make a truly great and thrilling horror film than an exciting action film. There are hundreds of great action movies, whereas I can only count the number of great horror movies on one hand. Alien might even be the best of its genre.
So, interesting thing about this movie is that the characters were killed in order of fame, with Sigourney Weaver being a total unknown at the time of release, while there was of course John Hurt as the first to go.
And even more interesting that so far the actors have been dying in real life in the same order as their characters: John Hurt (Kane) died in January 2017, Harry Dean Stanton (Brett) in September 2017
The alien is such a great movie monster - maybe the best of all time. And Ripley is such a great hero, especially in the sequel - maybe the best of all time also. You definitely have to watch AlienS.
Exactly this movie is so intelligent and Conceptually in depth from the visuals, production to themes, and the amazingly grounded characters who we balance each other so well off and the final reveal of ripely being the main character just this film>
I agree - it was a 'monster' movie --- but everyone today calls it a 'horror' movie . I'm old enough to have seen all those monster's from space movies in the 50's and early 60's . So this was just a continuation of that . only with a much bigger budget and great director , Ridley Scott ! ----- who also did 'Blade Runner' - a movie for the ages . And all without CGI !
To comment on your question Dawn, why the alien was initially just silently hiding in Ripley's escape pod: it's intelligent, often mimicking it's prey (as you guessed) to "learn" and become a better hunter. It saw Ripley prepare for hypersleep so it probably presumed going into hibernation was the best course of action for survival. I think it planned on wreaking havoc once she arrived at her destination.
Also, a little fact for you - when the chest burster scene was shot around the table none of the other actors knew what was going to happen. It was kept secret by the director, the effects team and John Hurt so their shock would be as genuine as possible.
The usual life cycle of the xenomorph is the egg, then face hugger, then larva/embryo, then xenomorph. The egg somehow senses when a lifeform capable of hosting the larva is near. The face hugger then launches itself at the lifeform. Once it latches onto the face, it inserts a tube down the throat of the victim to deposit the embryo and then acts as a life support system for the host, the embryo then starts to grow in the host. After a while the embryo is ready to emerge as a chestburster and makes its way out of the host. It then grows very quickly to it's adult size.
FuN Fact!: The meal scene where the chestburster (baby alien) first appears, most of the cast weren’t told exactly what was going to happen. Their reactions are 100% authentic. 🙂
"The Birds" had 13 year old Veronica Cartwright as Cathy (Mitch's young sister). Veronica grew up to play....Joan Lambert in "Alien"! (and Veronica's sister is Angela Cartwright who was in The Sound of Music.)
Fun fact about that scene when the alien bursts out of that man's chest; None of the actors were told that was going to happen. So their reactions in that scene are genuine.
Aliens, is a great sequel, different type of movie just like T2 was different to Terminator but complemented it perfectly. It's tag line was, this time it's war and it fit the movie perfectly.
The sequel "Aliens" is more action than horror but there is quite a bit of suspense. The sequel "Aliens" is directed by James Cameron who directed the Avatar movie.
Sigourney trying to redefine strong female character. This came out between Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back. Sigourney did Ghostbusters to show she also has a sense of humor. Carrie did Blues Brothers, similar reasons... Some effects are dated, but that android liquid is still too gross. I'm glad Tony Stark figured out how to build androids without the white lubricant, or Age of Ultron would have been a much different movie. :)
0:51. Thank you very much for saying that she is an, "actress"! It lets you know her profession and gender in one word. Unlike, "female actor" and "male actor", which are "clunky and awkward", though better than just using, "actor". Bravo! Kudos! Cheers! 🎉🎊☺😊😎
John Carpenter’s “The Thing” is a must. Was made around the same period and a great classic
The Thing is an incredible film
The Thing is a great movie but at the same time I don't like body-horror mainly because I watched this movie when I was 8 years old, at night and alone.
Yes, please watch The Thing. An amazing film.
The Thing > Alien
Come at me bro
Lol that's going to give them nightmares.
"Is he gonna bring something up?"
Why, yes. Yes, he is.
From the Alien’s perspective, this movie is “Die Hard.”
Gordon Davis 😂👍🏻

Heath Lawrence That sounds awesome, man.🙂
@Bobo Boy True! I've owned Alien in every format that's ever come out including laserdisc. 😄👍
I watched it in the early 80s in a friend’s basement one sleepover...
Freaked me the fuck out.
19:40 - "MOM!!" (Oh man, I am laughing so hard right now as I'm typing this...)
Mom's savage.😂
Mom's got some skills...
LOL wow
Her mom is right. Or, rather what she thought her mother was doing, is what the android was trying. The director actually confirms that.
@Big Chap Scott's ideas are sometimes better than the execution...
Kim (10:38): “Oh, he’s eating him. No, he’s looking at him. Maybe, he doesn’t like kitty cats.” 🤣🤣🤣
Kim is the best.
Apparently Jones the Cat was too small a snack for the alien to even bother.
I think it intended to use the cat as bait for Ripley.
Made my day. LOL.
What if Jonesy was actually the hunter and the alien prey 😼... 🤯
"In space, no one can hear you scream!" This was the advertisement tagline for "Alien".

Half the characters in Aliens are Badass, Vasques, Hudson, Sarge, Bishop.
3 of those were made by James Cameron too

Terminator 3 isn’t that bad.
Yes it isn’t as good as the first 2. But its very rewatch able and likely by being similar to the first 2

I always loved the alien doing the "jazz hands" before he grabs Dallas. :-)
With the Gilbert Gottfried voiceover going 'TA-DAHHH~'

Alien was just looking for a hug the whole time.

@JL Artworks would be perfect to watch in winter
God I wish you had watched the Director's Cut for Alien if you wanted to know what happened to Dallas lol. That entire scene is nightmare inducing.
Dallas’s fate is so horrific.
And Brett.

I knew Mom could take it, she's tough. That was great!
There is a deleted scene that answers your question Storm about what happened to Brett and Dallas!
Oh man oh man oh man. I'm home sick from work with an anxiety attack and I still refuse to miss this oh MAN.
It should be noted that Carlo Rambaldi created the animatronics for the Alien's head. Rambaldi later designed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial!☺
"How weird this looks. Is this a Face?" - ah, the Space Jockey...;) A cosmic Enigma..
Alien?!? You guys watched Alien?! I think you'll love the sequel Aliens!
You guys should definitely watch the next 3 as well Aliens,Alien 3 and Alien resurrection amazing series!
It’s been speculated why the alien stuck out it’s second jaw in the shuttle. Maybe a threat, or possibly tasting the air like a snake.
23:48. The potential for weaponizing the aliens, made even the expensive refinery that the, Nostromo" was tugging, expendable! 😳
Movies in the groovy baby, era of the '70's were so pure and ground breaking like THE EXORCIST, STAR WARS , JAWS and ALIEN, huh??
You guys should watch "Psycho" (1960)! Truly one of the greatest horror-thrillers ever made; by the Master of Suspence himself, Alfred Hitchcock!
David Allen97 Agreed. Great film.
Yes! And The Birds
"The Birds" had 13 year old Veronica Cartwright as Cathy (Mitch's young sister). Veronica grew up to play....Joan Lambert in "Alien"! (and Veronica's sister is Angela Cartwright who was in The Sound of Music.)
@@victorsixtythree She tossed in a little "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" between those movies to complete a nice triple feature.
It's very campy nowherdays though
Fun fact about that scene when the alien bursts out of that man's chest; None of the actors were told that was going to happen. So their reactions in that scene are genuine.
It's fun seeing someone seeing it for the first time :)
One of, if not, the greatest sci fi movie of all time.
0:51. Thank you very much for saying that she is an, "actress"! It lets you know her profession and gender in one word. Unlike, "female actor" and "male actor", which are "clunky and awkward", though better than just using, "actor". Bravo! Kudos! Cheers! 🎉🎊☺😊😎
