  • Video footage of Textron Scorpion, Beechcraft AT-6 Wolverine, and Sierra Nevada/Embraer A-29 Super Tucano aircraft participating in combat mission scenarios in the Light Attack Aircraft Experiment at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico.
    The Light Attack/Armed Reconnaissance (LAAR) or Light Air Support (LAS) program has been established to enable the United States Air Force to buy a light counter-insurgency, ground attack and reconnaissance aircraft. The aircraft should be capable of finding, tracking, and attacking targets either on its own or in support of ground forces. Approximately 100 aircraft were expected to be ordered, but USAF has reduced the number of aircraft sought to 15 aircraft. The new, 15 aircraft program is focused at training pilots, not a combat mission. This program has also been called the OA-X program or the AT-X program, although the reduced scope of the LAAR program has forced the USAF to push an "OA-X" program indefinitely into the future.

    The scorpion concept's layout makes the most sense , twin engines, twin tails, and the high wing for ground visibility. Not to mention that it should be able to get in to a target area a lot faster.

    • @TrangleC
      @TrangleC Год назад +1

      The problem with it is that the reason why the A-10 is getting retired is that it is not survivable enough in a "real" ("near peer") war and too big, awkward and expensive for the kind of asymmetrical counter-insurgency warfare it can still do.
      The Scorpion is barely smaller or cheaper than the A-10 and still needs pretty long and well maintained runways to operate from. It barely offers any advantages over the system it is supposed to replace, which is why it apparently was the first one to be eliminated from the program back in the day. It didn't even get to the "operating from shitty runways"-part of the testing.
      (I am aware that your comment is 5 years old and I'm not blaming you for not having the benefit of hindsight as I do now, but I think that is something that was foreseeable from the start.)

      @TrangleC I didn't believe you at first when you said a10 is being retired. So I looked it up and yeah it's pretty recent news and I'm sad about it. I understand why they are doing it though. But also it's way cheaper than any fighter nowadays at only 11-15million while the f15 for example is around 100-180million to make. And b2 bomber around 2 billion and b21 if I were to guess around 3 billion just because of its technology and stealth.

      @@thelethalpredator672 El tema es que no estas peleando contra aviones de 4ta o 5ta generación, es contra insurgencia en suelo y que solo los vez si vas lento a 200 km/h , o contra drones que valen 300 dólares , es mucho más barato usar aviones que gasten poco.,
      En Ucrania se están usando aviones de 1940 , y el que va atrás, se sienta con un rifle de asalto a bajar drones con su rifle ..Hacerlo con un avión a reacción ya gasta 10 veces mas de combustible y mantenimiento e irás muy rápido.

    As an ex Army veteran I feel nothing could replace the A-10. It was in my opinion the best aircraft for the job. I wanted to be in the Airforce when i was a kid and didnt want to fly the fast hot shot fighters. I always admired the A-10. Well I went Army and didnt fly but saw the A-10 in action. Wow. Impressive fire support. Maybe this next generation of aircrafts can meet or exceed the job. If not. I really hope the up grade the A -10 and keep it in service for years to come

    • @owenlien1593

      I think they just need to design a aircraft from the ground up for the purpose of replacing the a 10

    • @TrangleC
      @TrangleC Год назад +2

      The issue is that in a "near peer" war against a proper enemy, something slow and low flying as the A-10 is just not viable anymore. It could only work against "insurgent" type enemies in highly asymmetrical conflicts with uncontested air space and for that job it is too big and too expensive.
      Many things we consider "cool" because we grew up with posters on our bedroom walls just don't work anymore and need to go. Another example are attack helicopters. They just don't make sense anymore. Between drones, attack aircraft, precision artillery, fire and forget ATGMs that can be carried and fired by anyone and anything, cruise missiles and other standoff weapons and smart loitering ammunitions, there is nothing left a attack helicopter can do better than those other systems.

      @Gentleman...Driver 6 лет назад +25

      The other 30% is basicly killing tanks with the "BRRRRT"-Cannon. The A-10 is a very good ground attacker, but it is designed for large scale wars against a regular army. Since 20 years now it is facing asymetrical warfare. Killing some terrorists with an A-10 is overkill and not very cost effective. Every salve of the vulcan cannon costs a stupid amount of tax payers money. But the Air Force relies on this weapon system because they dont have anything else.
      Piston engined aircraft can do the same job with less money. They are also easy to maintain. I dont say that they should get rid of the A-10. It is an important plane for geostrategic large scale wars. But in countries like Afghanistan they are quite overpowered and non cost effective.

      @Zach Michaelis The AT-6 is actually better since it's American not because it would give jobs to people, but because it can integrate with our systems far easier than the Tucano can because it's cockpit is essentially the A-10's transplanted out of it. In addition to that, the logistics for it would be easier than the Tucano because the Texan is also our initial training aircraft for pilots, therefore parts would be easier and quicker to come by.
      Also, the Texan if I'm not mistaken has longer legs than the A-29. Also, most of these comments on here insisting that the A-29 is the best are from Brazilians, so it's not as if support for it isn't suffering from it's own nationalism IMO.

    For a light ground attacker the A29 Super Tucano is a much better option. It is cheaper and easier to maintain. The cost of 1 hour in the air is a fraction of any jet plane. And it is a combat tested airplane in many diferent scenarios from Colombia to Afheganistan. It is also used by severa Ari Forces including the RAF so you won't have problems with spare parts. And in adition when the time came to replace them it will be easier to find buyers.

      The A-29 Super Tucano has a flight hour cost at around 1000$. The A-10s almost 20.000$. The A-10 while amazing, has a lot of missions that the A-29 is well capable of doing, but cheaper. Also cheaper to repair because it's turbohelix and doesn't require a fancy, clean, airstrip. Here in Brazil we tested a lot of landing and departure on dirt roads that helped on the development, with a longer tail, reinforced landing gear, even the air entry changed a bit, our pilots also had a part, our cockpit has a better fov than the At-6 as an example. No, it is not a superiority jet fighter. It was designed to precise bombing, which we tested a lot, LAS, and light air patrol like to intercept helis and small planes such as those used for drug trafficking.

      Same armor profile as a A-10? Ha ha ha ha ha thank you, the best laugh I have had all day. Not to mention single engine vrs twin engine. Trying looking to what happens to gun rounds when they are hit buy gun fire,

    • @jecammer
      @jecammer 5 лет назад

      Opps I I accidentally hit the send button before I could edit the last sentence. When I was trying to say is that tests have shown there is no cascading effect when 2 or 3 gun type rounds go off in a magazine. I would add that this aircraft doesn’t have as many redundant systems as a A-10. Conclusion = you fly the turboprop in combat and I will fly the A-10, and we will see who lives longer. Or better yet ask a real A-10 driver what he thinks.

      No. Why did we spend 100s of millions of dollars and years deciding on a new platform, when we already have proven platforms, with new upgrades, that could have done the same job.

    I’ve always thought this. Why don’t Japan just build replicas of one of their single engine WW2 Twin pontoon float planes, like the Aichi E13 ‘Jake’, which was a three crew plane with a long greenhouse canopy, and equip it with sophisticated light weight weapons? The cost of patrolling the China Sea, Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa, North Korean sea areas would be miniature compared to what they use now and with modern communications and radar, they could call upon their F16s etc., in no time.

    The AT-6 still has a couple of remove before flight tags attached when taxiing out, starboard side. (1:56) As does the A-29. The seem to be gone in-flight.

      they are weapins lock, i think, they remove it far from the hangar. Or maybe they are just doing some ground tests, so they don't need to remove everything.
