    1976 the lake was full and there was only 2 bars in Town the holiday inn lounge gig and my gig the Windy Mesa a rock and roll bar owned by two twin Brothers married to 2 twin sisters who liked to water ski tandem nude at night so sometimes we (singer and guitarist in the band ) didn’t make it back in time to start at 9pm anyway first night in town we got roused and arrested on suspicion of murder because a drunk native American was stabbed to death outside the bar we hadn’t yet played at but we were the new guys in town . I came back in 1987 or 1988 to fish stripers they were running thick right before the last 200 yard’s before the buoy before the Dam .. Drift over and over to the boundary and always catch several per drift they boiled in the water like deep sea fishing but has never been that good since until last i checked in 2015 .We used frozen whole anchovies. Lake Powell is an amazing place 2200.00 miles of shore line thats more than the west coast ! In the month i explored daily we never saw a tiny bit of this amazing lake its a whole day trip to reach halfway back it . I was lucky to see the lake full back in its glory days ! The original Planet of the Apes was filmed there the space ship crashed in to the lake and then that terrain is all lake powell over by the old power station.

    these fish were easily 12-15 pounders each 20 years ago. Almost wanted to say 15-18 but maybe younger years were exaggerated. I just remember them being an extra few inches in length with a gut on them. I also remember going to the pumps with that rock island like formation and that #3 buoy spot with the rainbow like formation on the rock wall. Good memories of catching chungus strippers.

      My biggest was about 10 pounds. I have spent many a long hour trying to better that and don't have the skill or the luck to make it happen. Sweet video. I had pretty much decided I was retired from fishing, mostly because I suck, but I think I might have to give Powell another go. I live a couple hours from Powell, what time of year are they boiling? Can you catch more when they are boiling?

    • @KyranKeisling
      @KyranKeisling  6 лет назад

      Thanks Bret! If there is a lake to make your fishing come back on it's Powell. Stripers can be very dumb in these waters. They boil starting about the second week in June through September. The length and frequency of the boils changes from year to year. This year we had a very poor boil season. It is much tougher/technical to catch Stripers on the boils, it is also very equipment reliant (trolling motor, light line, casting rod, top water baits etc..). When the anchovy bite is on, it is the easiest fishing you can do. Barbie poles and anchovies work great. Make sure to check www.wayneswords.com to see if they are biting anchovies before you come. Sometimes they have enough shad to chase and aren't doing the anchovy thing. Early spring is usually lights out.

  • @JaredHillhouse
    @JaredHillhouse 7 лет назад

    Another great vid Kyran. Love your stuff. I usually put in and fish from Halls. I just started getting into stripers last year. What depth are you looking for/hooking up on usually when you start chumming? I don't imagine I want to start chumming in main channel at 250' deity expecting fish to show up do I? Hope someday to make the three hr drive to Page and try the south end. Keep the great vids coming.

    • @KyranKeisling
      @KyranKeisling  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching Jared,Stripers are regularly in water that is 250-400 feet deep, but they live and eat in the top 80 feet of it. But with that being said I don't usually bother with going much deeper than 50 feet and most of the time I'm in the 30-40 range. There has been a few times that I have graphed fish and then caught them deeper than that but it is rare. If the fish aren't in the usual depth and I don't get a bite in a half hour or so, I move to the next spot until I find them. A lot of the good areas that I show in this video are underwater cliffs/points that have a ledges at the 50-80 depth and then drop off to 250-400. Now, for winter spooning or in the off years when the stripers are not biting anchovies then I have caught them deeper than 50 but that kind of fishing is totally different. I plan to make a winter striper video this coming season to show how that all works.

    • @JaredHillhouse
      @JaredHillhouse 7 лет назад

      Awesome, thanks for the response back. I'm still learning the Powell fishing stuff and looking forward to my first real fishing trip out there this year. • @Chrissers2010
    @Chrissers2010 4 года назад

    Kyran, are there any hot shore fishing spots for stripers? Not asking for them as I can do my own research. I would likely look for drop-offs near shore that I can hike to. We will be heading from Oregon to Northern Arizona in September and might not be able to bring our boat since I will be antelope hunting in 5B and will likely be pulling our ATV trailer.
    I'll share with you one of my Lake Powell "secrets". I had one of my best days ever fishing in one of the spots mentioned in your video. It was colder weather in March and the stripers were VERY lethargic. I finally discovered the ticket was 4 pound test line, #4 bait holder hook (a bit smaller than normal), no weight with a piece of anchovy. The difference being the very light line to get an almost uninhibited drift to the bait. I would go up to 6 pound and the frequency of bites would drop way off. There was a guy right next to me and he was doing everything I was doing except with 10 pound line and caught nothing. I spooled him up from my bulk spool of 4 pound test and he immediately hooked a fish and broke it off (drag not set well). He didn't think he could land a fish on that weight line and quit using the light line, never caught a fish after that. I've used this light line technique for other fish when they are finicky. The very light line gives the bait an almost uninhibited dead drift.

    • @KyranKeisling
      @KyranKeisling  4 года назад +1

      Yes there are Hot shore spots for Stipers but it all depends. September was really tough this year because there were so many shad. Epic year for shad and the Bass didn't need to take chances with a chunk of Chove. It's looking like another banner year is coming our way with all the snow pack and so I anticipate another good shad year. Boils will be solid but you need a boat for those. Hit the spots highlighted in my shore fishing video. Hit and run is your best bet. Find drop offs and points and chum copiously. If you don't get a bite in .5 hours move on.

    • @KyranKeisling
      @KyranKeisling  4 года назад +1

      And Yes, light line makes a big difference sometimes! Especially in the winter. Thanks for sharing that! Its really good advice.

  • @gobabygo48

    Awesome video. I'm going take my first trip to lake powell from wyoming 3rd week of June. Is there anything your looking for on your graph? Just schools of fish? What time of year was this video taken?

    • @KyranKeisling
      @KyranKeisling  6 лет назад

      It' s early May. Yeah, nothing fancy with the graph, just looking for the school. Some years the Striper don't do the anchovy thing and a graph is imperative for trolling and spooning. Hopefully, this June they are biting cut bait and your graph isn't as important. BUT just because you don't see fish on your graph doesn't mean you shouldn't fish in one of the spots in this video. The fish will move around in a circular pattern looking for food and usually it is just a matter of time until they show up where your at if you keep the chum rolling.

    • @gobabygo48
      @gobabygo48 6 лет назад +1

      Kyran Keisling thanks for the info, man. This will be my first time fishing for strippers in general. I've been a walleye fisherman all my life. We're going to rent a house boat for 5 days out of wahweap and tow my boat behind. I got a good graph and I pilot so I'm hoping the fish wanna play too. We had to wait till 3rd week of june because my wife's a teacher and doesn't get out of school until the 10th or we'd come sooner.

    • @KyranKeisling
      @KyranKeisling  6 лет назад

      3rd Week in June..... Boils should rolling about that time. Check out this vid ruclips.net/video/Ifvyo_lZEBI/видео.html Water will be rising rapidly at that time so other species will be much tougher. You are a Walleye guys so you know how to use a worm harness with chartreuse blades. Try that, and try trolling deep to medium deep crank baits. Early in the morning and late evening are key. And the night fishing for catfish and stripers can be really good. Sandy coves for cats

      Thanks Kim! I was using a concoction called the "Keystone Grab Bag". It is an intricate piece of fly tying brilliance where I reach into my tying kit and grab a bunch of shiny s*#t and tie it on a hook in a feeble attempt at matching a thread fin shad. Hope that helped :-)

      Thanks Patrick, April and May are the best months on Lake Powell to fish for any species. With that being said, you can catch Stripers from the shore pretty much any time of year. I took the kids out to the fishing dock not to long ago and caught several. And in the summer the night fishing is always good for Cats and Stripers. This is an awesome video, man! Thank you for sharing the info - we'll be on Powell at the end of this week (mid-October, 2019). Are the stripers and/or smallmouth hitting good now?

      Thanks Doug! Sorry to inform you but I just went out yesterday and had a heck of a time. I bet I saw over 200,000 fish though. The lake is PACKED full of shad, fry and baby bass. My artificial baits had no chance against the real thing. I only fished for 2 hours and didn't get a chance to fish a few types of structure and lures but I did talk to a guide and he told me he was having a rough go of it. I hope that you have better luck. If I were to go out again I would try slash baits over islands and long points but that would just be a guess.

      Thanks so much for the reply, Kyran. I was looking at the weather forecast for Thursday, Friday and Saturday... Looks like it's gonna be pretty cool while we're there - highs from the mid 50's to low 60's and lows in the 30's. Likely not the most conducive to tearing up the bass anyway but we'll sure give it a shot. Thanks again!

    Great video man is it better to fish with open bail vs closed ? What's the pros and cons ?

    • @KyranKeisling
      @KyranKeisling  5 лет назад

      Let me make sure I understand what you are asking. Do you mean by "open bail" that you are going to let the fish run with the line a little before you set the hook or do you mean a spin cast reel? I will answer both: First, I use a spin cast reel over a baitcast reel because it is easier to cast a soft anchovy with them. It is funny because I think that "baitcasting" reels are actually terrible at casting bait. I don't use closed face zebco type reels at all for anything. I used them when I was 5 because I didn't know how to use a spin cast reel.Second, I don't use an open bail when fishing for stripers. I leave a bow/slack in the line and that is usually enough time to give the fish to inhale the whole bait. Giving them any more time than that usually ends up in the fish gutting the bait and results in the needle nose pliers coming out. I do however use an open bail when fishing for catfish. They take their time with getting the bait all the way in their mouth and I find that I come up short if I don't give the Catties a little extra time. Hope I answered it correctly for ya Juan. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    • @KyranKeisling
      @KyranKeisling  7 лет назад

      Where do you live Levi? Other than Powell I recommend the Colorado River for trout. My next video's are going to be about hike in fishing spots all throughout Glen and Marble Canyon. However, you can drive to Lee's Ferry and above the Paria Riffle the rule is flies and lures only and below it you can use live bait. When the Paria River isn't flowing muddy the bait fishing below the Paria can be quite good. Other than that, I have fished Upper Lake Mary (I heard someone just caught a giant catfish there recently) and the Verde River. I have actually done very well for Bass on the Verde but you need a boat or a canoe. There are many other lakes surrounding Flagstaff but I have never enjoyed fishing those windy, muddy ponds. Although they have caught some toads out of them from time to time.

      @@KyranKeisling i have a question. I’ll be going for the first time in may 1st for my birthday. Which would be better fishing from shore and how is the access. Anchovy point or antelope point? Most likely doing a Carolina rig with chovies unless you suggest otherwise. Thanks for your time and love your channel!

    • @KyranKeisling
      @KyranKeisling  3 года назад +1

      @@Rigs__Rigs with the water being so low I am not sure about where the best spots are any more. I think Anchovy Point and Antelope would be equally worth a try and don't forget the Wahweap Fishing Dock. The dock is frequently the best spot. If you are trying for Stripers try to find points or cliffs that give access to the deepest water and try and avoid fishing over ledges, because you will continually get snagged and if you do hook up you risk breaking off on the muscles growing on the ledge. Even a light touch on those pieces of crap will cut your line. Try your best to avoid weight on you anchovy and if you do use some, keep it as small as possible. The sink is where the action is. Avoid dangling your bait straight on underwater cliffs. Reel up and cast again once it has fully sunk and made contact with the cliff. I use a full anchovy on the shore so that I can get it out there farther. Use light line so that you can cast further. Good luck. Let me know if you get into them.
