From someone who just turned 60 and am working to get my body and mind back into bicycling, after a 4 year hiatus dealing with my sister’s terminal illness diagnosis and then my mind fu*k after her passing. Watching you accomplish this was the start of my own journey to take this beautiful, yet so cruel sport more serious, to start properly training, to believe in my abilities and building the confidence to sign up and finish my own challenges this year. “If the mindset is there, you’ll finish, no matter what.”, these words will stick with me forever, and I heard myself saying them out loud several times when it started to hurt, when I was bursting into tears myself in torrential rain, bruised and bleeding from a crash, and when my rational mind was on the brink of taking over my body and almost made me stop. Thank you for putting this out there, you are an inspiration.

Late to the party, but HUGE congratulations to you both!! Epic ride, epic performances. Charles, that section at the top, repeating your mantra....that was EVERYTHING man. I'm 59 and still pushing hard in long distance trail running, and mountain biking, including stuff like 9 Rim2Rims at the Grand Canyon since being 1yr out of a chemo lab in 2014. The WIND, the RAIN, the elevation, all conspiring to kill your motivation. I'm glad I didn't have another thousand metres to climb! Was so dizzy at 9000 feet I had to stop and put a foot down and collect myself.

Great ride! I was out there a few days before you. I didn't do the impossible route, though. Rode from Hilo on the roads. The gravel section after the visitor centre was BRUTAL and, by the time you get back on pavement, the elevation makes things good and tough. Well done!

Top notch production quality! The hardest climb yet in my entire life has been 8.5kms at 6.5% gradient, it was painfull. I can only wonder how much more painfull this would be, that too in thin air!!

We did had sickness going up by car a few days prioir maybe because the ascent was fast. But during the ride, it was a lot slower, so got time to acclimate!

The word "epic" gets thrown around in cycling but this ride was deserving of that label. I rode Haleakala a few years ago and that effort, while by far the biggest climb I've ever done, pales in comparison to this. I can't fathom riding loose gravel at 12-14K feet. Chapeau!
