Reminds me of my former american professor. I brought him and his partner to Kota Tua. It was a farewell dinner before he returned to the US and i was the one who initiated it so technically i had to pay for our dinner right.. turned out that i didnt have enough money to pay, and my professor ended up having to pay.. he smiled at me, not angry at all, he was very very kind.. i will never forget him.
Learning history from you is always fun, as Indo-Dutch person myself I feel goosebump hearing such a history of this country, most of Dutch that time may be cruel, but many of them are good people, believe or not my great-grandfather is former Dutch KNIL on duty in Cheribon (Cirebon), West Java in late 1947, he and several of his comrades defected and joined the Indonesian Siliwangi Division, he had participated too in the general attack on Djogjakarta in 1949, I proud of him, he rest in peace in 1999.
This building was made by the VOC, which was a megacorp thus indeed filled with arseholes. Don't confuse the VOC with the Dutch Empires and the people.
I love hearing you tell history, it's so much more fun than taking history lessons at school! Glad to know that the difference between those two foods is the coconut milk! That cafe looks really historic, classic and elegant! Please imagine Nick shaving his beard and dining there in a high-end suit..., that picture should be priceless! You did a really great job again, thanks a lot for sharing!👍🤩🙏
10:40 i want to tell that soto ayam in every region in Indonesia has many types of soto, some of them use coconut milk and some of them are not, what i know about soto betawi they put coconut milk and normal milk (cow milk). so yeah enjoy your trip in Indonesia Nick!

Don't let the outside appearance fool you Nick; Cafe Batavia is one of the best restaurant there in kota tua 🤣 A little bit more expensive than usual restaurants, but worth to experience at least once. And as a native betawi, I feel honored to see you tasting one of the best (albeit expensive) soto betawi 🙏 Safe travels.
thank you sooo much for this video!! i love how you take time to tell the history!! im from the netherlands and i am a descendant of mixed relationships between european and native Indonesian people! in colonial terms we are called 'indo's... the indo's had to flee/leave the country after Indonesia gained independence in between 1945/1964.. the indo's have their own culture and even language with influences from the dutch, european and javanese sundanees etc cultures and languages..
the food might be 2-3 times more expensive compared to normal one, but even as a local indonesian who living in sumatra i think the price was worth it, the vibe of historical building cafe is really cool and it looks fancy for fine dining, i have to give a visit there too when im around that area of jakarta. great video nick!
16:42 Jan Pieterszoon Coen probably the most vicious CEO in the world, but his legacy still exist in Indonesia which are popularly known as "Coen" Trifecta; Corruption, Collusion, and Nepotism or KKN in Indonesian. The VOC also built 4 meter statue to honor him for more than 200 years in Lapangan Banteng until it was destroyed by Japanese army to gain the support from the Jakartans. The similar statue still exist in Hoorn Netherland and the Dutch are reluctant to topple it. During Soeharto era the same lot where Coen's statue once erected, were replaced by The West Irian Liberation Monument...
Glad you had a great time at cafè batavia, yesterday tried to get into this cafè seems unacceptable for a local like me to be eating there (maybe because I didn’t dress nice enough but at least i have money), I haven’t even entered the cafè yet and the waitress was already on the door blocking me from entering while asking “what can I help you with?” and i just give her the weird face until she made me come inside and told me that I should look at the menu first (maybe they thought I can’t afford the food there lol) while i was given no direction where i should sit nor I could ask questions to them about the menu (maybe because they’re more occupied with a white customer haha), but didn’t want to waste my time anymore being treated like that so i left quickly without ordering anything (no regrets).

We could say that Soto is an Indonesian national dish along with nasi goreng and sate. U could find soto in almost all region in Indonesia, but every region have their own characteristic to differ their soto to the other. Soto ayam and soto daging are the elementary kind of soto. Then, betawi people add coconut milk (santan) and some veggies into their soto, while bogor people add noodles and some carrots in their soto. orang betawi is originally a melayu/malay race, betawi means "gerbang" or gate in english, because they always welcome for other people to come and trade with them, don't forget that arab people is one of the first that got contacted with them through trading, that's why almost all of betawi people is a muslim, then come other races (including Portuguese and Dutch) that first come to trade but then.... you know the rest.
May be next time you can write a book about Indonesia from your prespektif and Indonesia history that you learned from your Travelling 😁 thank u Nick you have shown Indonesia from your vlog
About the doll, you see the first doll you see is we call it Wayang Golek, it is traditional doll from west java and Jakarta, they made the doll by scuplting the wood. The second is Wayang Kulit, kulit is skin, Wayang kulit is traditional doll from middle and east java, it made from cow skin. The third, the big one on glass is Chinese wayang
"Betawi" is how local people call "Batavia" at that time. They couldn't pronounce "V", they pronounce with "W" instead. Others said the Batavia was too western, Betawi sounds more local.
Ah, yes....a memorable place. There is a café not far from the exit where I had a lunch date with my dream man when we were in Jakarta. It had better foods and prices compared to Batavia café. I forgot the name of the place.
@@NickKTravel You'll definetly need a guide or a native to accompany you if you do that because trust me dude you don't wanna travel alone to papua. Just go to Raja Ampat and the major cities if you can and don't do any jalan jalan to kampungs alone. If you want to see the tribal part of papua you must go with guides/natives and just buy a livestock (pig/chicken/goat etc) to give to them cuz it's a symbol of thanking them for letting you visit their area. (You'll def need to spend more money than usual but if you wanna do it i think it'll be worth the experience).
"oe" (Dutch) is pronounced "oo"" (English) as in "boek - book , orang oetan , stoel - stool as in chair not faeces" . Maybe after they seized the cannon they decided to invade melaka in 1642. But in the end they still relied on the british to fight napolean in europe and passed melaka to the british. 1824 the dutch anglo agreement was signed. The dutch were no match for the british navy who also defeated the french navy.
