If this is the under 20 players, then I wonder how many of the guys that have serious NIL deals passed on this? Why would our best youth players who are going to the power 5 and have huge NIL deals risk getting injured for an international game that really doesn’t matter? If this was the real Olympics then best believe either the top NIL athletes or heck, our NFL players would’ve suited up to show the world this is our sport and no one is going to run it but us, and it’s not a question of who wins the gold (USA) but who wins the silver.

Coach's thinking is convoluted; that is what happens when you cannot defend your thesis with facts -- or, more to the point, the facts show your thesis to be utterly wrong. That's when people resort to word salads. Smitty pointed out the ways in which American sports are not dying, and he correctly mentioned players in various sports. Coach says Smitty is wrong for mentioning players. That's absurd: because Coach himself began the discussion by saying that the principal metric for showing that the NBA is dying is *THE NUMBER OF PLAYERS* in the current draft that are from foreign nations. And, therefore, Coach refuted his own criticism of Smitty for mentioning players. Smitty was correct to mention players because they are the mother's milk of sport. Smitty went on to say that it is Americans who are responsible for the growth of basketball, at the amateur and pro levels, in those other nations. The NBA, then, is not dying but is, in fact, thriving because international players means greater worldwide attention and greater revenue for the NBA. When the NFL plays games in Europe, Japan, and Mexico, every game is sold out. American athletes in football and basketball are still the best in the world -- by far. That is why the foreigners want to come play here rather than in the other pro leagues in the world. Technology has made the world a smaller place. Sometimes Coach sounds like a Luddite, like a person who is prefers the status quo and, correspondingly, has a disdain for change or progress.
Here is Coach's big mistake. He took an unrepresentative sample, a molehill, of an insignificant scrimmage between Japanese and American players and tried to make it into a mountain by putting forth the unsubstantiated and outrageous extrapolation that American sport is dying. A more wise and sober appraisal would have been to say that those American players, for whatever reason, took the Japanese players for granted or did not practice hard enough or, it may be, were just lazy. Perhaps American sport is dying, and I am too ignorant to understand that it is. But, Coach, you need to present credible empirical evidence to support your point of view. Telling Smitty that, in essence, he's wrong because he doesn't agree with you is not evidence. That's circular reasoning. Saying something is the case alone does not make it so.

I think coach should rephrase the question. It’s too vague, which lead to multiple interpretations. Is the USA dominance in sports dying? Yes. Is the USA interest in sports dying? For a lot of sports, yes for various reasons. Are USA athletes declining in skills and drive to get better? Yes.
Why? The simple answer is money. A lot of rules changes to make things less physical and “dangerous.” Technology made many lazy people and made things too convenient. Also, the economy affects both potential athletes and fans. Coaches stopped teaching the fundamentals and many coaches don’t commit to a program just as much as the athletes. Many athletes and organizations made the sports unnecessarily political and/or agenda spreading. Excessive money stolen the hunger to get better for many athletes.

While I get the point JB is trying to make, I'd ask this, If American sports are dying, wouldn't that make it America's fault? Our Americans are going over and training these other countries to play America's games, right? So should we really be surprised and upset when our players lose every now and then? Agendas being pushed in sports is another reason American sports are dying with people turning out because of.
