ILS to Minimums

  • Coming back to Biggin Hill from Liverpool, in the aftermath of Storm Callum, was quite an experience.
    This short video shows the landing, to minimums - cloudbase 300 ft, rain, mist and a tail wind - the worst weather I've flown in so far.
    Minimums - my legal minimum is 200 ft but we all have personal minimums below which we don't like to go and this occasion (300 ft) pushed mine.
    Turbulance - the prime navigation instrument is the HSI which shows the ILS needles - that stayed fairly constant in these gusty stormy conditions but the sensitive VSI went crazy (as it would).
    If you like ILS videos, take a look at the last few minutes of this one:-

      Thanks for the comment.
      The full IR (or even the restricted version) is a very reassuring thing to have.
      You suddenly become confident that you can deal with most weather but, if wise, will still avoid the worst of it.
      When you get to the stage where ‘going on instruments’ feels completely natural, you’ve won.

      @@davidhorobin1060 ... Yet, one can't relay in them, one need to prepare for the worse and always ready to take over should the AP fail or not do what you expected it to do, which is sometime fault of the pilot for misconfiguring it or not understanding fully how it works. But if the AP is not doing what you expected, it doesn't matter at that time who's fault it is, you kill it, take over, make the plane do what you want it to do. There is a semi-joke that says that the last words of an Airbus pilot before crashing are always "what is it doing now". And there was an American Airlines training called "children of the magenta line" where the instructor said "if you are in that situation, don't ask "what is it doing now", click click, clack clack (meaning autopilot and autothrottle off), take full manual control, enforce the flight path that you need, and then, when everything is back in control and safe and you have time for analysis, ask "why was it doing that".

      They do that. Both are static air pressure instruments and both tell history (what you were just doing a second ago) but the VSI is kind of sped up in a way in it’s design. Sudden air change in the static air can make the VSI move a lot but the plane hasn’t actually moved yet so the altimeter hasn’t reacted.

At higher altitudes it would be based on the surrounding area topology.. But remember once on approach you're flying straight wings level and stable.. Just maintain best glide.. • @davidhorobin1060
      @davidhorobin1060  2 года назад

      Yes, the altimeters are set to QNH (height above sea level) - Biggin Hill is 600 ft above sea level, so at 400 ft above the runway you are 1,000 ft on the QNH.
      With the altimeter reading 850 you are 250 ft above the ground.

      @@davidhorobin1060 Another 'odd' aviation idea. QFE would be much more useful - when approaching landing airfield AFTER a field local obstacle height (pressure)...
      so, in UK over 4500ft, use 1013 - as a general flying activity - then when reducing altitude for airfield approach, use pressure at the top of the local peak and finally airfield pressure below 1,000 ft. Then the altimeter would show ground clearance and you'd actually have a real idea of how high above ground you are !
      What cruise altitude were you at between Liv and Biggin ?

      IFR approaches are always done on QNH.
