And most people ignore the fact that it's not only BYD that's Chinese, there are loads of legit brands in China where consumers of all segments will rather choose and purchase from (over Tesla), some even in higher priced segments. NIO, Zeekr, Li Auto, Huawei (AITO), Xiaomi, XPeng, BYD, Geely, Chery, Luxeed, Avatr, SAIC, Jidu, etc. And Tesla is no longer the more technical advanced brand (it hasn't been for years), and innovation is mostly led by Chinese brands for recent years, it's just Westerners would purposely ignore the technological advancement of Chinese brands in tech, battery, motor, AI, self-driving (much better performance domestically). And Western publications tend to sculpture Chinese brands as cheap, but they're the most technical advance cars globally, it's just the pace to export them are 1-2 years slower, so most models being looked at are old variants.
I live in Israel, and there are so many Chinese brands of EVs here that I can hardly keep up. Most of them are still fairly rarely seen, but I see LOTS of BYD Atto 3s and Geely Geometry Cs all the time. The MG4, which is also made in China, is also quite popular here. We do, however, see plenty of Tesla Model 3s and Model Ys.
In Brazil, a BYD factory is set to begin operations in Early 2025, according to recent news. The plant will produce the BYD Dolphin and Dolphin Mini (Seagull). We hope this local production will lead to a price drop, especially considering the excessive taxes the government currently imposes on EV imports.

It's not about keeping up. When you look at how much the Chinese government has subsidized the industry it by no means is a level playing field. Imagine if a global automaker received heavy subsidies from its government so that it could sell vehicles below what the Chinese sell their cars for in their home market. I love the car, especially the way it drives, the user interface and the regular stream of software updates that also adds new functionality that makes it feel like you are getting a new car each time. For the present, self-drive cars are of less interest to me. The state of UK roads means there are less opportunities to make use of current auto drive technologies. I don't think Tesla will have a viable self-drive car until the move away from the sole use of vision. It has a key role to play but doesn't perform well when theres is poor visibility such as heavy rain or fog, or when strong sunlight overloads a camera and temporarily takes it off-line. I am replacing my Model Y with a new 2024 Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor in the next couple of weeks. I would have preferred a smaller car, but no legacy car manufactured comes close to Tesla with regards to the whole car ownership / operational wrap, and Chinese car offerings are currently not as well established in the UK as they are in the Australia and New Zealand to make them a viable alternative.

I have tried several Model S and The BYD Han has way higher quality interior wise, it feels like a different price class then the model S, would say it is between Mercedes and Audi in feel.
I think the best way to sell Chinese made vehicles in the US is through partnership with Japanese brands. If it were sold with a Japanese brand name and had service available through those dealerships it would be accepted. The bZ4x is not a competitive EV but to spite that fact sales might double in 2024 compared to 2023. Imagine if Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, and Subaru could get the best technology from China that really is competitive.
Ummmmm.... how tmput this. Toyota just signed a deal with BYD to supply their ENTIRE drive trains for years to come. They know what the US and Europe are yet to learn - sometimes you have to cut a deal because you'll loose market share wile you are trying to beat China at its own game. Also with an investment in local networks to service and maintain the vehicles. Manufacturing cars in the US as the case in Europe is just to expensive.

The reason there are no low cost EV's is because they are incredibly expensive to produce, not because they are ignoring median income buyers. are you kidding, the interior of Tesla model S falls apart in less than 3 years, the panels don't even align. Do you know why Toyota and Honda dominates the US markets for decades? I stayed away from Japanese cars for a long while. Getting service and support in remote areas was virtually impossible. Lead time on parts could be months. I expect the same or worse from Chinese EVs. Once they fully set up a dealership and service network with broad coverage the cost advantage will disappear.

This may be the weakest report I have seen. BYD has dangerous quality problems. Poor crash protection, Emergency braking is not reliable. 10x the fires of Tesla batteries. I would like to see an accurate evaluation.
I could be wrong but byd's fires are apples to hybrid apples comparison. Their non hybrids/plug-ins, bev is not 10x. I thought the price is lower than tesla's for models with less features and techs, would you say you get what you pay for? Sounds like a decent product?

That suggests that tho will not continue the federal tax incentive, especially since they were put into place by the Biden administration. Time will tell.

There is NO way a truck that heavy is going work. The wear and tear on the suspension and frame ball joints is incredible. That is almost as heavy as the 9000 lb Hummer, which is huge. 2. @@BobbieGWhiz If one is a free market capitalist allowing companies to fail is just normal business. Are some companies too big to fail? That's a political decision and above my pay grade. Right now there are no EV's that meet my needs and very few American made that do. I've searched for some time and game up with little to buy.

BYD is far superior. Chinese EV tech is much better and they cannot be beaten on price. Within 5-10 years Tesla will be very minor in China and out-muscled in every country bar the USA

The robot axis concept would kill the car market. Driving should be fun. Otherwise , take a bus or public transportation. To me, the robotaxi has no appeal. Affordable EVs are what I look forward to owning.

are you kidding, the interior of Tesla model S falls apart in less than 3 years, the panels don't even align. Do you know why Toyota and Honda dominates the US markets for decades? Not that Americans are not patriots but the reliability of american cars is trash and worst than European cars. I think this guy is under Tesla's payroll for advertising. And remember Robotaxi doesn't have lidar based on the model they show at their last event and that's why a lot of investors were not impressed. I'm not letting a car that doesn't have lidar and steering wheel to decide my fate.
I stayed away from Japanese cars for a long while. Getting service and support in remote areas was virtually impossible. Lead time on parts could be months. I expect the same or worse from Chinese EVs. Once they fully set up a dealership and service network with broad coverage the cost advantage will disappear.

No Chinese manufacturer should be able to operate in USA unless they partner with a US company, ie Ford, GM, Tesla, etc.
capitalism and democracy goes together, if we do that then we're turning into China. If China can let Tesla setup factory in Shanghai and get the same subsidiary from Chinese government. BYD should be able to setup factories in the states.

This may be the weakest report I have seen. BYD has dangerous quality problems. Poor crash protection, Emergency braking is not reliable. 10x the fires of Tesla batteries. I would like to see an accurate evaluation.

@borshardsd On paper it's a good product. I saw a video today where there are rear crash protection.Somebody showed pictures of thin metal versus many many times thicker metal to protect the rear. Has anybody done a crash test on these cars? As you know , all three tesla models are the top crash protection vehicles.
byd sells on price, not on tech. on the tech side a number of chinese ev-makers are far ahead of byd and even challenge tesla.

The US battery manufacturing that has been exploding due to the IRA act will hopefully continue (if Trump values employment in those red states) which would allow USA to reduce the dominance of the Chinese battery manufacturing.
Why would Trump care about employment in the red states? Do you think he cares about those people other than to get their votes? They may benefit by green energy jobs, but they don’t fundamentally support green energy. Their financial interests don’t align with their values.
Now that we have a new administration, what will it do with the EV tax incentive? Will it continue all the EV projects and incentives already in place?

@@neochimera8666 Trump and Vance have spoken negatively regarding electric vehicles. Vance suggested giving $7500 incentives to ICE vehicles instead. That suggests that tho will not continue the federal tax incentive, especially since they were put into place by the Biden administration. Time will tell.

Teslas are far superior to BYD, as measured by every metric. Further, as Tesla masters the manufacture of its own batteries, it will be able to compete with any EV car manufacturer in the world in terms of cost. Already, here in the US, the Model 3 RWD LR can be purchased for $33,900 after the federal rebate with a $1000 referral. That puts it at around $40,000 without the rebate. This car has a massive 82.5 kWh battery that gives it 363 miles of range. As battery costs go down, it is possible that Tesla will be able to drop this cost as much as $5,000 in the near future.
Even the Chinese realize that when you buy a Tesla, you are buying the best EV in the world bar none. This is why Tesla is one of the best-selling car brands in China. Because Teslas are just better in every way than any other car made in the world, Tesla will continue to dominate the worldwide auto market.
The real key is battery cost right now. In the near future when solid-state batteries come out, those batteries will be revolutionary and they will dominate the market. CATL is already testing an EV "semi-solid-state" battery that has over 600 miles of range, will charge in 10 minutes, and carries a 15-year warranty. This battery is nearly ready to enter mass production, and it will radically improve EV performance in hot and cold temperatures and range. This is why Tesla is feverishly working on acquiring this battery technology and concurrently improving their own in-house batteries.
Tesla are garbage compared to byd. Byd puts out a new model every month. Byd sells twice the number of vehicles and that is diverging quickly.
So only Tesla has access to this Chinese company batteries? If you care about range and true American car the Chevy Silverado beats Tesla by an order of magnitude already. If you care about price I doubt mode 3 will ever be able to compete with the Chinese automakers especially as the batteries are getting cheaper.

1. The curb weight for the Silverado EV is a staggering 8,800 lbs. for the biggest battery option. That's over 4-1.2 tons. To put that in perspective the curb weight for a Ford F350 diesel is 5,854 lbs. The Cybertruck is 6,900 lbs, over 1900 lbs less. There is NO way a truck that heavy is going work. The wear and tear on the suspension and frame ball joints is incredible. That is almost as heavy as the 9000 lb Hummer, which is huge.
2. The Silverado EV's software is a generation behind Tesla's.
3. Chevy's cruise control is clownish compared to Tesla's FSD.
4. The cost for the top end model fo the Chevy Silverado EV is $96,495. That's $16,500 MORE than a Cybertruck.
5. The Cybertruck is faster, more efficient and handles a LOT better than the Silverado.
6. The Cybertruck will two 11,000 easily. The Silverado's limit is 10,000 lbs.
As far as Chinese batteries, Tesla has licensed CATL's semi-solid state battery design, which is revolutionary and is building a US plant in Nevada to produce them.
In China, both the Model Y and the Model 3 cost more than competing Chinese cars, but both sell like hotcakes in China because the Chinese KNOW they are far superior to the Chinese competition.
China just rated the Tesla Model 3 to be the most reliable, trouble free vehicle in China, and China has the world's largest auto market. The Model 3 beat out every other manufacturer for reliability.
Simply put, you don't have a clue about what you are talking about, and that is being nice to you.
For you, Tesla is the best electric car simply based on the fact that you don't have more choices, in China, the opposite is true. There are more and better options here. That's why the US had to block Chinese EVs with 100% tariffs.

China has a lot of EV options because the government subsidizes them. But it doesn't have a single EV that can compete with Tesla. BYD is the ONLY Chinese EV maker that is making a profit and Tesla's Model 3, Model Y and Model S and X just dominate Chinese sales.
Further, the Model 3 was just selected as the most reliable trouble-free car in China, beating out the mighty Toyota's legendary reliability.
