Hey , I clicked the link to Beaufort, and it’s giving me Beaufort South Carolina . QAR ran aground in Beaufort North Carolina near Morehead City. not South Carolina . It’s a common mistaken but people here in North Carolina take pride in Black Beard and the QAR .
@@GoldandGunpowder No the link on the video that gives the location as “ Beaufort “. The link you just gave me was right and I believe it’s a link to the North Carolina Maritime Museum ( I have visited their many times ).
I am doing a game about pirates, and I really struggle to find good material about old ship engineering and phisics, how many timbers, the usual draft, details in shape.. Could someone help me find some good references about it?
I wanna put one thing in here: The Caribbean is one of the most treacherous waters to sail. It is incredibly difficult once you move away from the main routes. It is absolutely stacked with sharp rocks barely under water level (invisible rocks), shallow zones of barely 2-3 meters deep, wrecks. Take a good look at the sea charts and you will find that Blackbeard was not a bad navigator, it was just difficult.
I used to buy into the myth of Blackbeard intentionally wrecking the QAR myself, but given that experienced crews with engines and modern navigation technology manage to accidentally run ships aground all the time in modern day it's very easy to see how easily it could have happened back in the day, especially given that Blackbeard was a tactician and strategist not a navigator, it's very well explainable that he took the QAR into the sandbars as a strategic move but didn't know exactly how to navigate around the sandbars and having the ship on full sail with no reefing or whatever was either a poor call or overconfidence in his skills on his part.
Who ever you are 'Gold & Gunpowder' I like your style and have been binging on you since I boarded your Pirate ship. For your demo stats I'm from the Davy Crockett /Treasure Island boomer age & got much of my education from 'Mark Twain' who once said of his youth, " Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates. A person of a philosophical nature might find something poetic about a privateer warship being saved from a service as a bearer of human misery and set back to her true purpose of raising hell.
Picking a slave ship to alter into one of the most powerful pirate vessels of the time. Smart move imo. Got a big ship with a lot of cannons that is a pretty fast one too. A very effective vessel
First, I love the channel. I, being from the outer banks of North Carolina, grew up with a very different story. Ed was married and went home on the main land. His crew, not happy with the time off, decided to take the fleet to pirate without him. He caught up to them as they were on near oakcrakoe inlet. It was unfortunate that the English navy was in that area looking for his flotilla.
I have to think about the size of the ship. Forty guns are twenty perside. But at about 100 feet long the gun deck would be hard pressed to mount more then ten or eleven guns. Five on the quarter deck seems high, two on the forecastle. Pretty crowded, and crew hungry. Often ships of this time didn’t mount guns on the weather deck. I wonder if half of her forty guns were swivels??? I wonder that man
Are there any records that show how fast was she in knots? I know that the Whydah was around 13 knots, making her one of the fastest fully rigged ships in the West Indies.
@@GoldandGunpowder surely she would have been slowed down by the guns that Blackbeard had installed ? Would seem she would be slowed down by all the metal ?
