What a wonderful experience you get to share with your son. Motors are just parts, and can break. Sure the cost is awful, but the experience of doing this with your son is priceless. I hope this P-car stays in your family for a long time.
For the rebuild, buy some of those cheap LED overhead light fixtures (2-bulb...they're like $15 at Ocean State!) hang them from garage ceiling and you will be very happy with the lighting. 2 on each side of the garage will be a huge improvement. Couple of those adaptors that you screw into your incandescent bulb holders that will allow you to plug the lights in and have them on the switch and away you go.

It will have to because I'll never recoup my investment. 😊 But I really did it because I enjoyed the learning process as trying as it was.
