    Only guessing but maybe the bit that's nearest the seats folds back separately so you can recline the rear seats.

    Oh well done… It definitely needed a parcel shelf and the one that you have shown in my opinion is perfect. Keep up the good work.

    The updated version of the shelf (1641293-00-F) has 3 folds which I puchased recently to replace the shelf I have. Much better design and managing it.

    We took delivery of a Y with parcel shelf. I don’t want to sound ungrateful but the design is awful. Every hatchback we’ve ever owned has had either a thin sculpted cardboard like shelf that lifts with the tailgate or a rolling retractable parcel shelf. The Tesla one is some thin planks of MDF covered in fabric and foam with extremely limited folding. When ‘folded’ you still can’t see the rear of the boot. To remove it (for a long or tall load) it has to be slid out entirely horizontally towards the rear and then where do you put it? There’s nowhere to store it in the car, it ends up standing on end behind the driver’s seat and falling over. This is an afterthought and a cost saving one at that.

    I can't get my shelf to stay in that folded forward position you demonstrate. It seems to want to slide back all the time when I'm putting groceries in which is a huge annoyance. Perhaps more friction would solve that, or I need to break it in more. But what I do instead is grab the front and pull up to release the magnets, then push the entire shelf forward and it slides and hangs down against the seat backs until it hits the floor. This gives me more room and doesn't have that annoying slip back. And just pull back to reset to normal position. Not sure if this would wear out eventually but it appears to work consistently and a good alternative to removing it permanently which I have considered. **Update** I just saw a video where someone can tuck and fold the flap pitched to the rear and I think that would solve my problem with the slipping. I guess I just learned something.

    Fantastic, my MYLR is due next month (wishful thinking I know), and this is a welcome relief that I won't have to fork out for a 3rd party option!

    The parcel shelf looks fine. My Model Y delivery is estimated for first half of September, and I am looking forward to getting a car with a parcel shelf. I was just looking on the Tesla accessories shop and they now sell a tyre repair kit for the Model Y / 3. It cost £74 and comes with a storage bag, compressor, and sealant. So, Telsa have appeared to change their advice regarding using tyre repair kits!

    I think that it's a good idea to have a parcel shelf. It hides what is under there! When the Model Y was introduced without it, people complained about it's omission.
    If you don't want it then it can be easily removed!

    thanks Rory - been following your model y experience - got one on order, delivery expected between Nov 22 - Jan 23 (latest text according to Tesla!) - and wondered if the parcel shelf would be included (prefer it to be for sound reduction)

    We don't get it at all here in Australia, not even the ledges to put one. Not too bothered, but it's nice to have the choice for those who do want them.

    Nice video sir, a quick question... Is there an easy way to stow that cover away, possibly under the main boot shelf like some other legacy car maker solutions? Or will it be a keep in the garage jobbie? Thanks in advance!

      @pocoyomc 2 года назад +1

      Unfortunately there's nowhere to store it in the car. It'll have to go into the garage.

    It's hard to see how a well-fitting parcel shelf /could/ lift with the tailgate given the hinge point and that opening. 🤔

    Nice video and explanation but tbh for me it’s totally unnecessary as we’ve a big dog and the shelf (if it was with my March model Y) would be stored in my garage as was its Audi predecessor 🙂. Enjoy your contributions as they are honest,simple and practical. 👍

    Being a non Tesla owner ( at the moment ), does the Y have reclining rear seats? Would that fold on the parcel shelf that butts up to them be anything to do with that? Whereby the seats can recline and push up that end bit? If all that makes sense lol

    • @cotswoldmusings
      @cotswoldmusings  Год назад +1

      Yes, self reclining seats with electric button release from rear door. Some people sleep/camp in their Model Y’s.

      Think he’sasking about it reclining like 15 degrees backwards. Yes it does. Idk how the shelf affects that.

    • @brentmsdn
      @brentmsdn Год назад

      When the seats backs are in normal non-reclined position there is several inches of gap between the seat backs and the self. So they don't interfere with the shelf.

    How does the parcel shelf impact audio since there are speakers in the boot /trunk door?

    • @brentmsdn
      @brentmsdn Год назад

      In normal position the speakers are just above the shelf so no impact.
