Without the catastrophe of Vietnam, LBJ would still be among the most beloved of our Presidents. But Vietnam consumed his time in office, ripped apart the American society, and left a huge ugly scar on our reputation. It literally killed LBJ himself, when he retreated to his ranch and drank himself to death at the age of 64.

I was surprised there was no mention of Chester Ronning's diplomatic mission to Hanoi as one of the reasons for the delay of the POL airstrikes.

I think the Vietnam question depends on one's political views. Johnson was a democrat and supposedly liberal, but his policy in Vietnam was conservative. Stop communist aggression. And aggression it was. At that time, the world could have easily slipped into worldwide Communism. The Philippines, Thailand, and many other countries needed the leadership of the United States. Plus, South Vietnam, a democracy, corrupted they were indeed, but asked for our help. My final opinion is that LBJ had to go into Vietnam to win. Perhaps we did stem the tide of communism in Asia.

Lynda Bird reminds me too much of Luci Arnaz. Not to offend anyone.
