  • Apple's Newton device made its public debut at CES in 1992. Marketed as a computer that fits in the palm of your hand, the device never fully took off. See how CNN covered the tablet three decades ago.

Those were the olden days. Way ahead of its time foreshadowing what’s here today.

At the time it wasn't a failure (Apple produced several generations of it). For Apple, the Lisa was a major failure (financially, then maybe Mac clones). The original Newton came out before the Palm Pilot (and really, we should see it has a PDA of the era). Just watched an episode of Computer Chronicles form 1995. They had a segment with several PDAs. The presenter said that the 3rd generation Newton still had some handwriting recognition, but was a good contender as it had the most software for a PDA and was good for databases. For now, it seems there's more hyperbole that Newton was terrible because it wasn't an iPhone or iPad. Humm....no, technology just wasn't there yet (for software or especially hardware). The Final nail for it was Steve Jobs: who insisted it had to go before he came back to Apple. Ironically, Palm Pilot was becoming the more popular PDA because it was cheaper, smaller, and it offered an ecosystem for automatically syncing data with your PC.

Let's not forget that iPhones were constructed in blue prints back in the 90s.

The first iPhone launched in 2007. As far as I am aware, there were no blueprints for the iPhone until the 2000s.
