  • By 1968, at 47 years old, Suharto emerged as Indonesia's number one man. For the next three decades, Suharto and his family allegedly amassed the largest ill-gotten fortune in all of Asia.
    Most of which would likely never be recovered, constituting a $35 billion theft that continues to haunt Indonesians till this day.

And with the tradition embedded by Soeharto regime I don't think that corruption and nepotism will be that easy to rooted out since it very strongly rooted. Only by the new generations do we hope that they will break the root and chain of corruption and nepotism.

    Why US let him ruled for more then 3 decades although he did not implement democracy in Indonesia? Because US & his friends have reservered all of the Indonesia's natural resources, the biggest one is freeport (one of the biggest gold mine or others on earth)
    Those was opposed by the first president of Indonesia since he was so smart and really care for the people of Indonesia.
    US and the West actually do not care of one country condition, as long as the nation does not run Cummunist system and could give them what they need (natural resources and the market, these are the point) then you are free to do what ever you want to your nation.

      Disagree, the former was a communist puppet and the later was capitalist's.
      We didn't have the technology nor the resource to competently extract the natural resource at the time and had we kept going with our first president we would be similar to north korea (very poor and fanatically patriot).
      Neither president adhere to indonesia's "free and fair" approach to international politics (to be fair no young country at the time can escape cold war) and thus affecting our growth as a nation.
      As for your final point, this were the themes of the cold war era (even now probably), letting these dictator thrives as long they adhere to your side, neither power were really cared about their underlings; if you really think soviet union will help our growth i'd like to smoke what you smoked lmao

    The real life Don Corleone. My dad emigrated to Indonesia to start his own business in the 80s and told me a lot of things regarding the country from it's economical standpoint. The Indonesian Rupiah weren't that overpowered by USD. Then in the years following up to the riots of 98, you could see the plummeting of the inflation rate which one could still see to this very day. From a business aspect of things, it's good for foreign investors to come to Indonesia and commence business. But my dad always told me that in order to do business in Indonesia, it's not 100% about negotiating with your business associates whether it be a venture or investment. As long as you give a piece of the action to the government, you'll have no restrictions. Law is money.

    you cant mention the timor leste conflict like that without mentioning up north in Vietnam the Americans are not exactly being good samaritans and a lot of pressure was put by the western countries. it was the cold war. note how westerners call it an occupation,while the timor seperationwere actually made by europeans during colonialism. the east and west part of the island are actually one people

    • @professormathematics1637
      @professormathematics1637 2 года назад

      The issue is that it was never constituted in a legitimate manner. No fair and free election were held afterwards (after Indonesia invaded east timor) to determine its fate. It might well be the case that it doesn't want to join west timor (Indonesia in this case)...forcing the union without free and fair consultation to the east timorese would be disasterous as well (see for example the Biafran Civil war due to the forced union of the Igbo dominated Biafra region and Hausa-Fulanis in northern Nigeria by the british empire)
      Edit: On the point of North Vietnam. The issue was not that South Vietnam was separated from North by french imperialism but by the creation of south Vietnam itself to be illegitimate. Its independent referendum, after the french lost, was Mired with multiple issues (vote rigging, Violence against the opposition and bribery) - sometimes helped by the U.S. Meaning no "will of the people" was constituted in its creation. If the south Vietnamese people were able to vote freely and fairly and chosen to be an independent country then I don't see why the communist north must impose their economic system upon them...socialism within a nation without a significant support of its population would end in misery (see the afghanistan war in 1979 - 1989). Also, don't use the "we were a single people" argument...kinda close to the blood and soil vibe you know

      "Westerners"? More like just Australia, UK, and US. "Westerners" is just too broad definition. Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and even France never intervened in Indonesia's politics during that era. Even China and Soviet were more assertive in exerting their influence to Indonesia during 1948 and again in 1960s, but ultimately failed.
      Also, the invasion of Timor could've been just forgotten like India invasion of Goa (Goa is still India's territory today, noone protest it).. if only Suharto didn't abuse Timorese people with bad treatments. Didn't "tembak massal" (shooting) people at Dili city in 1991 (Insiden Santa Cruz)

    • @NurmaBP
      @NurmaBP 2 года назад +2

      @@notamoonraker Timorese weren't the only ones who's been treated like that. Aceh been militerized operation area (DOM) for decades, not to mention Papua. Even Javanese and Sundanese, the largest tribes, couldn't get away from him. In one pov, he's indeed a tyrant, but from geopolitic pov, he's done something that help Indonesia didn't end like Afghanistan just like The West planned, he doesn't end like Khadafi too. Before Arab spring, they tried Indonesia and South East Asia first. The year 1997/1998 was Asia financial crisis, it started when speculators attack Thailand Baht, then spread to Hong Kong, and so on. ASEAN foreign exchange basically collapse that decade. It leads to politic instability in South East Asia. Basically debt trap. Foreign investors and financial speculators ruined these SEA countries currencies and stock market. Spread to East Asian countries (South Korea, Japan, China via Hong Kong). Year 1997 is when Hong Kong back to China. You must understand, this is how geopolitic work. Using psywar (this include media play) to manipulate fear in foreign exchanges market, hedge funds, swindlers, and all.
      Timor Leste from the start is being targeted to become puppet country by Australia, UK, and US. They want to build military base there and all.

      @@NurmaBP LOL what? Are you defending him because "the west planned Indonesia to be destroyed"? Blaming wESt this wEsT that? LOL. It was BJ Habibie, Abdurrahman Wahid, up until Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who dome something to prevent civil wars in Indonesia. Suharto was actually the cause. His repressive reign plus his preference of developing Jakarta/Java island over non Java island prove the be the cause of Acehnese separatist movement, Papua separatist movement, and Timorese movement. The militarized operation area (Daerah Operasi Militer - DOM) was unsuccessful, it only fueled their dissatisfaction and anger!
      The Asia Financial Crisis in 1997 happened.. yes.. but Vietnam and Malaysia were safe. Why Indonesia was not? Might have something to do with Suharto corruptions.. he had been unpopular at this point of time, added by the fact that he already in rule for 31 years, continously. No wonder Indonesian people protested him, demanded that he needed to go down from his presidency.
      Even when the demonstration finally broke out in 1997, Suharto was allegedly the one who tried to divert the blame on ethnic Chinese in Jakarta, his agents were provoking violences against them.
