I am finding with a little modification this trick works well on the US Sharps .50-70 carbine. My modification is, heat the ladder to warm with a cigarette lighter, then touch the wax to the warm ladder while tilting it up. The wax melts and runs right down into the sight elevator and fills the voids and loose places. Cooled the problem is gone.
Marvelously simple, and ingenious fix!
