370. Save £000’s DIY Pram hood 1.0 for my Narrowboat

- A professionally made pram hood will cost me over £3,000 and the waiting lists for good companies are over 12 months.
The lesser companies will do it in 6 months but will still cost around £2,000.
I met someone who can build one for me as a prototype for a new business for him. So I need to creat the frame and work out the design

Perhaps consider a zippered window like a convertible car's back window for the front "air gap".
And the same in the sides covering and behind the tiller for good sight lines.

That’s exactly what I’ve been looking at today. I’m thinking that this popper things that you get on boat covers will work better and be easier than a zip
he paints fixes the hull, engines and everything else but he seems ti get the most enjoyment from fixing the material for boat😁😁

Great job on version one. Now you’ll get to find out what works and what doesn’t. You’ll be able to make adjustments to it before spending the big bucks on the permanent one. Smart man. Crack on.
James you know I have been with you since you started your boat/home journey. How the mods, you wish to develop, come together in your mind remains amazing to me. I hope the temporary pram hood works well and keeps you dry and warm during the coming winter. Hopefully the gentleman developing a permanent solution does so and you're not let down. James, as usual , my respect.
I’m hoping so too but to be honest it’s really not that complicated to get a fabricator to do the same thing

I reckon with some steel tubing, a small pipe bender and linking brackets you could sort this (including canvas hooks) as there is nothing you can’t master. Good on you for giving everything a fair crack

Well done 👍 It's a smart idea and will help keep you and your children safe from the elements. You did need to make a prototype for your final cover so ignore the negative comments. Blooming great James. Might not be perfect but the structure looks fine, the maroon colour is perfect against the green. Some tweaks and I think it will look really good. Your full of brilliant ideas. Yet again Well done James. 💚

When I watched this, I’d just had nuclear tests on my heart. I’m sorry but your cover looks like how I felt, lol. But it gets the job done and that’s what’s important.

You could ask your friend to make you a panel that will cover the bow hatch too, as it will hopefully keep your bedroom warmer and less drafty. I would definitely recommend getting the skirt/cover properly sewn with reinforcing tape inside the double rolled hem as the winter winds really pick up and you don’t want the eyelets ripping straight off. Getting the pram cover properly made, will keep you dry and hopefully less draughts steeling all your fire heat in the winter 🙌🏻

Thinking a bowed bit of metal tube could support the top of the skirt at the tiller location. Bowed enough to provide a clearance for tiller movement.

i would build a fiberglass cover that slides forwards
You should put some padding on all the sharp corners of that frame or the cover will very quickly wear when the wind blows. Those right angle ends of the frame look sharp for the black cover.
We have a wooden a frame for the winter cover for our sailboat. We have softened the edges by sanding them and then used old towels and bits of old carpet tied to all corners and junction points of the frame. It is not elegant but protects our tarp cover over the winter storage months. You would want something more beautiful for padding inside the cover since this is your home.

Maybe some pool noodles slit lengthwise and then cut into desirably sized pieces would do the trick. I’m afraid the pipe insulation foam tubing would be too small. That’s why I suggest using a larger foam tubing such as the pool noodle if they are available in the off season right now. They are super cheap over here in the USA in the dollar stores.
You are right it is hideous, but as you said it is just a prototype and it only has to be functional and not pretty. I didn't realise that pram covers were so expensive. That is several times more than I paid for my first car a 68 Austin Mini
Put clear plastic across the front gap staple it to the wood. Or plexiglass would even be better.
James for the tiller arm to get clearance/freedom of movement are you able to attach a couple of curved bars/pipes to your uprights either side to push the fabric out, so you don't have to cut.

It really makes a big difference temperature wise to the inside of the boat. It traps the warms air too
looks really great. Did I miss you saying you would seal the turn ups? Jut to stop them filling with water?

I would have gone with velcro to attach the skirt to the main cover and then you could have used velcro to get the right angle to attached to the side of the boat.
Apologies if someone has already made the comment but couldn’t you glue the hem with pva glue.?

You remind me so much of one of my sons who at 22 yrs old successfully tackles projects in a similar vein. Another job well done, and , for now, you'll be more cosy and secure through the Autumn.

Mate, I just bought a half decent brother sewing machine off eBay for £30. I’m about to embark on making the curtains for AWOL having watched a few RUclips vids. Once I’ve cracked them I’ll be moving onto the dinette seating and then the cratch cover. I’ve got the curtain material that is very similar to your denim seat covers. Enough to make 10 pairs of curtains it’s a grands worth from John Lewis but I got it for 50 quid 😅. Would anyone be interested if I vlogged the process ?
