- In this video, I will walk you through the step of installing Home Assistant on VirtualBox in a Windows 10 PC. This home assistant setup, is usually don't on a RaspberryPi but for someone looking to test home assistant windows 10 install might serve them better. Home Assistant virtual machine setup allows you to spin up new session and really try out different setups without having to flash a SD card. The home assistant installation is fairly quick, so let me know if you have any questions below.

Struggled with Virtualbox on Toshiba laptop. Got halfway but could not get HA installed until this well structured guide got me all the way. Thanks, your guidance is much appreciated.
Still helpful 2 years later. Thank you! Liked and subbed
I struggled for a long time and then found this vid. Simple, calm and striuctured. Now HA is up and running. Thanks for a great vid.
For noobs out there as myself, be sure to activate Virtualisation from Bios to be sure that the Other Linux in 64 bit is available and not just the 32 bit. Thx for the vid, it was perfect.
thanks for pointing that out!
I can only see the "Other Linux (32-bit)" option, how do you find the option for 64-bit? I have gone through my Bios setting numerous times now where it just says SVM ---> YES. I have checked the OS settings and everything there checks out.
@@bradley2504 that's strange, what CPU are you running?
I'm facing the same situation. I wonder if it is because I'm running an AMD chipset. Or could it be Windows 11?
Thank you for a very clear tutorial. I got Home Assistant up and running with your help without much trouble.
He is installing and running every (flavour of) Linux operating systems on his VirtualBox.
Interesting because mine did not come up with a configuration setting, nor supervisor….. Please Advise….? Amazing video by the way….
VERY useful! I love clear straight to the point videos! Thanks! Though I do feel like an idiot after sitting here for nearly an hour wondering why nothing would happen after entering my Home Assistant IP address in the web browser, then I forgot I needed to add that IP address to my trusted zone to get around the firewall. SMH.
This is exactly what I needed, thank you!
Excellent video, best run thru while attempting to install where everything is so new for us wet behind the ears (novice at present). Cool ... ciao
Glad you liked it!
So very happy with the video so clear detailed and stepwise. Got it done on the first time only. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for your help and it´s very interesting. You can check so many things, build it in and many things more. That´s a nice software. Make more of this ideas.
Super useful from start to finish!
Thanks.. perfect tutorial.. Do you have a method that should the pc that running get powered up to have the virtual box load and the home assistant reload ?
Regards
Excellent video, very straightforward and easy to follow. Many thanks for a great job!
Awesome guide, worked like a charm on my first try! Thank You!
Thanks for the clear instruction. Very helpfull.
Great video. Detailed and very clearly explained.
thanks so much!
Thank you for this information. Have performed the download / installation several times on the virtual machine (windows 10) because of different computer(s). The question that I have is how do I completely delete the home assistant from the virtual machine? seems like every time I install the virtual machine it finds the previous home assistant (with previous set up). I'm trying to perform a completely new installation on everything, but cannot seem to remove the previous home assistant.
When i try to create a new virtual machine, in the first menu, VB asks me for an ISO, what should i do?
I feel like there are a few steps skipped here
I blew past the ISO part, left it empty. I think it only cares about he VDI disk.
Simple and straight forward. Thanks.
I'm using vbox 6.1 on my win 11 and I've enabled the DHCP on my router but it can't get the IP on my home assistant vm, tried this many times but no luck. any idea ?
Thanks for the video! Any idea why I'd need to stop and then start my virtual machine every 24 hours? Everything else works great except for that?
At 1:51 min I'm only showing the 32-bit version of Linux. Where do I find the 64bit version?
I added Virtualization in my Asus BIOS. It was under CPU / Advanced / SVM / Enable. Then the 64bit version showed up
What is the oracle VM icon. Not been told to acquire that first
this video is really useful, thx alot!
I can not use esp8266 in eaphome by using virtual machine. Can you please tell me how to do that?
Do you know why I would have to stop and restart my VirtualBox every single day to keep HA connected?
hi, I ran into some problem which is the IPv4 address is not showing. so I cannot copy the IP address. it only give for the IPv6 address. I have restarted the software but still ran the same. How do I solve this?
Man your video editing is super cool! What do you use for that?
wow.. thanks i am using Adobe Premiere ... it takes a lot of time :(
Thanks for the great video. I was thinking of installing on my home computer. Can I still use the memory for my every day tasks which was assigned to virtual box or do I lose that memory to Virtual box
can we close the virtual machine once we open the URLs on the browser?
Really Good, Guidance from beginners. personally i like your efforts to teaching to others. can you help me regarding this Home Assistant
You said minimum of 2 processors. If I have a 8-Core/16 Thread CPU (Ryzen 7 2700) will this use up 2 entire cores, or can it utilize two threads only so that two threads of those 2 cores are still available? Also, if I designate 2 processors of my CPU to HomeAssistant, does that basically mean my machine only has 6 remaining to utilize for other purposes? So if HomeAssistant is using 2 Cores, does that mean my performance will suffer for other tasks?
how could u get the supervised version? i ve 11.4version of HAOS_ova and i dont ve the supervisor option, could u help me?
How to install VirtualBox Guest Additions for a virtual machine Home Assistant?
Help, when i select bridged adaptor there are no options in the adaptor name drop down. Is there something missing?
Same here!
Any difference between Vdi and Vmdk files?
IN NETWORK SETTING AFTER SELECTING BRIDGE ADAPTER I ONLY GET WIRLESS is it necessary to select ethernet 3:29
Yes. What it means is that you have a wireless connection already and that would become the bridge.
ipaddress with :8123 gave me a not responding error
Hi im unable to connect to the server i font have any ip option only urls but they dont work what should i do ?
me too
Same here - I'm not getting the IP addresses, just the HA URL and Observer URL, and neither seem to work for me.
I solved it installing the microsoft.net framework

hello air great video.... and after seeing your video i aslo install Home assistant on my lenovo windows pc.. it worked very fine for a month but now when try to start the virtual machine... it says ERROR returned from Supervisor: System is not ready with state: setup.... what would i do can u please help
Great guide. I am currently running HA on Microsoft Hyper-V. Runs extremely well and happy with performance. But as you are likely aware, Hyper-V doesn't support USB pass-though. As my Lan based Vera Plus hub is no longer supported, I may have to migrate to a USB Z-Wave controller soon. Hence, I may now migrate VM off Hyper-V. Hyper-V is very lite and fast. Any chance that running VirtualBox as lite/fast when compared to Hyper-V? I've read from others that VB may introduce latency with the host Windows 10 system. Any insight or perspective from anyone is greatly appreciated.
Great video, I was just wondering. how does one unlock the supervisor mode on the left panel?
I wasnt sure myself, but i found this post on how to run supervisor mode... i hope its helpful community.home-assistant.io/t/supervisor-in-privileged-mode/170629
@@GEEKrarGuides Strange that you automatically have supervisor in the left sidebar ?
The link you provided did not help.
I think it's because of the version. Could you put the version in the video to the Internet
I installed haos 7.4 and its not there with me either.
Отличное видео. Все получилось.
приятно слышать. Спасибо за просмотр.
Works good except I can't figure out how to get my USB z-wave stick to show up. No devices on the USB list to choose from. I do have the extension pack installed.
I had to delete and reinstall everything again and then all the usb devices showed up.
Your almost there on 1k subs geeks
thanks man, its taking a lot of work
How do I find my Username? I was stupid and didn't write this down.
i am only getting 32 bit options listed in the create new, latest version of virtual box. help please.
Did you install 64bit version of virtualbox? And install the extension pack?
Turn on virtualization in your BIOS

Good vid

TKs!!!!!!!
it doesn't give me an IPv4
i have the same problem

@@michelvollmuller4008 look my reply
Anyone not getting the supervisor tab?
Yes… Have you solved the problem?
Hi I followed all these steps to the tee but I don’t see a supervisor option like you do on the left. Do you know why that is?
Hi. I think the problem is in the version of the HA. If you look closely, He used version 6.2 in the video.
Today is version 7.4.
If you have found a solution, then let me know...
It would be ideal if the "GEEKrar Guides" shared the downloaded source file with us
