these are great ideas on how to do water changes! i personally do a water pump system and i put the pump with suction cups at the measured level of 15-20% wc. Then i pump it with a vinyl tubing into the kitchen sink and there you go! EASY. NO BUCKETS. When i refill my 50 gallon tank i attach a adapter to the kitchen faucet and have another tubing going into a bucket and then i use the water pump again and pump it into the tank with another tubing. SIMPLE. i use it use buckets and a gravel vac but once i planted my tank and use the water pump system for water changes; it has now been really easy to care for my tank!! thank you Dustin, your an inspiration to people like me whom got obsessed with this hobby lol and now my 50 gallon planted community aquarium is my "Baby" ! have a great day guys!
I'm sorry, but Gary just crushes this. Guys like him need to be on film more....ooozing knowledge, thanks again for all of the positive feedback on this video folks!
+Dustin's Fish Tanks Im in and out of a wheelchair so i don't carry either. I use some of the same setups as Garry except a pre filter. We have no need for it here. We have spring water but real cool setup.
Gary is indeed the man. I've been in the hobby for 5 years and thought I had a nice system. I've never learned more in the space of one video. Thanks for sharing!
Sometimes I forget how easy I have it with straight well water. I've never had to treat the water, just let it get around room temp and dump it in. The plants love the iron and the snails love the calcium. haha
Great video and a great speaker. Had the pleasure of having Gary as a guest speaker and the ANGFA convention in Brisbane last week. Spoke about some of his amazing New Guinea rainbow trips. Legend.
I have been doing a bunch of Facebook LIVE as it fits my quick style - Click here to follow me on Facebook: facebook.com/DustinsFishtanks.And EVERY DAY I do 30 second videos on Instagram: Click here to follow me on Instagram:instagram.com/dustinsfishtanks/
I have been keeping fish since I was 10. 53 years. The one thing I despised was water changes. I had a 200g shallow reef tank. I took a 200g plastic cattle trough. At this time I was on public water. I would fill the tank with 100g water using 3 150W heaters and a whisper 1000 air pump for aireation with 4 air stones. Apply the declor and the salt, turn on the heat set to 85. I would run this for t a week before I would do the water change. The next weekend I used a mighty giant water to drain the tank and then with a hose from the basement where the trough was located I would pump the fresh salt water back to the reef.
Hi! I have a question about something. Do you know anything about using well water for aquariums? I supply my own house with well water (it's very hard water according to my test strips) and I use a water softener for my sinks, showers, etc. For the longest time, I've been afraid to use the softened water so instead I use straight well water. This becomes a very big hassle for water changes. I have to fill up ~20 gallon jugs well before the scheduled water change because I need them to sit in the house to get to a higher temperature (well water is very cold). I then siphon out the water into a large container, manage to dump it in the bathtub, then haul up the jugs to fill the tank back up. Now, I've just seen a 50ft Python siphon and that looks like it would give me a much easier time. But all the examples I've seen show it being used with typical tap water and treating it with Prime. So, would I be able to do the same? Need different treatments to my tap water instead of Prime? Thank you!
Seriously, I never was so amused by a Fishtank Video. Laughed more than over most comedy Movies these days. Gary is just the man! I think "Gary don't carry" is my new-old life motto. :D
Great video. I found that using larger diameter tubing and connections can nearly double the rate at which water can be drained and pumped out and into the aquariums. Cut the time for my water changes in half.
+HalfMan HalfCichlid i 100% second this. I am actually now, because of this trip, using 1 inch all over the GH for my water changes... Drains and fills mad quickly
After taking water out from the tank, is it safe to pour the tap water straight into the tank and then add seachem prime, or should I put the tap water into a bucket, condition it with prime and then finally move to my tank? Thanks.
QUESTION: What about siphoning to a 5gal bucket on the floor, that has a sump pump with a float switch that pumps up to the sink? You could set up as many siphons as the pump can handle.
Truly an amazing man this Gary fellow love the fish room. had a fish room like that one time not nearly as big as Gary's 85 tanks wow i only had 12 going then they came with a water meter and we now need to pay for the water that we use and with all the water changes was getting to expensive .I miss those days i sat there for hours enjoying the tanks even had a beer fridge what a man cave it was and now i'm down to 4 tanks instead. Great video Dustin keep them coming.
Tip for Gary - I wired a 12V buzzer to a 12V transformer and I used a 3 way plug with a an on/off switch, so when I turn the return pump using the switch the buzzer stays on reminding me to shut it off. I used to spill a lot of water. Now I don't spill any! Hope that helps.
I am young and got into fish about a year ago and have been doing alot of research and have found that I really like gar fish. so far I have a Florida gar and he's very interesting love watching this guy eat. I'm curious to what your views are on garfish?
also right now he's in a 80 gallon its not a big deal because he's still a baby no bigger then 5 inches but for Christmas I'm getting my first big tank of 220 gallons I'm really excited to see how big he will get
+Fish Behind Glass yeah- he's got all kinds of tricks up his sleeve. Guys like Gary are loaded with all kinds of great knowledge from big high level concepts to small little tips and tricks.
Hey dustin i freakin love your channel and videos and i was wondering if you have a tabk with shrimp and if you could make a video on it if so about the care and setup and whatnot and a cheap way to aquascape a 10gl tank
A great Video and a knowledgeable man... love the "Gary Don't Cary"..... thats priceless.. I already use a few of his ideas in a similar fashion due to my back condition.
To avoid waterfalls pick up a basement water alarm. I use The Watchdog Water Alarm and hook the sensor right to the rim of the tank and it sounds at the perfect level.
That is a great system, however, I would recommend using globe valves versus ball valves as they have a tendency to be a pain in the ass to open and shut.
+Chris Gill thanks, this video was taken after he drove me all over St. Louis to a bunch of other sweet fish rooms.... I had to share how he does it all as I think its important to have a good system
+Calvin Pederson hardly any to start.... it depends on how many water changes adn how often you do the work. Plant heavy, start with like 10 small fish
+L Snider There is a reason he has been my past two videos and an interview with him last year....He is also feature in Amazonas magazine and gives talks all of the time.
love getting a look at how someone like Gary handles this stuff! maybe I missed him saying it, but how often is he doing water changes? keep bringing great stuff dustin!
Noooooooo, don't get carbon blocks from Home Depot/Lowes/Menards. Get the ones from Bulk Reef Supply. They did a video where they tested all the differnt carbon blocks on their effectiveness and how fast they stop filtering. Most of them stopped working waaaaaaaaay under their rated gallons
THE WAY I DO WATER CHANGES IS VERY SIMPLE, JUT GET AN INEXPENSIVE PUMP AND JUST HOOK IT UP TO YOUR HOSE, AND LET THE PUMP DO THE JOB FOR YOU, AND WAY FASTER THAN JUST USING SYPHON

Im sorry to say: That I click away fast, whenever I meet you. RUclips exposes me to an overload of Americans and their fishrooms. Its ok. But not you, I cant stand listening to one sentence of hype coming out of your Mouth, so I click away as soon as I can find the mouse. Thats what I do, and you wouldnt care. But now after the 100th click away I thought I should tell you. Yes our interests are quite similar, you do interesting Things, and yes I have watched videos from you to the (bitter) end. But I cant stand your language and over American hype. Ii think you should calm down and Watch David Attenborough and relax a bit. And also it would be a good ting if you sort of imagined, if you can, that you are available for the World to Watch and that America is just a small country among other contries that populate the World.
The second I stop being who I am is the day I die a death inside- there is Nothing wrong with not liking me (I’m not always this excited). You are nothing to me. Many people are something to me and those are the people I make videos for-not you- and that’s ok with me that you don’t like me

Where do you get sponge filters like that? Are they just air run? Looks easy to clean
"Gary don't carry!" lolol -- Love, Love, Love it!!!

awesome setup, so jealous! any way you could show those lights? diy using guttering? thanks

+Dustin's Fish Tanks
What is the black material on the bottom of the tanks?
Thanks Dustin and Gary! What awesome information this was! Apparently it works well too, as Gary's fish tanks are so beautiful!
what are the sizes the the tanks behind him and on his left?
He might might not like water changes, but damn, it makes for a fascinating video . I'm taking notes. So many of his tricks are ingenious.
+Fish Behind Glass yeah- he's got all kinds of tricks up his sleeve. Guys like Gary are loaded with all kinds of great knowledge from big high level concepts to small little tips and tricks.
Those metal racks are pretty slick for the 40 breeders, are those custom made?
+Clifford Miller Not sure, I know he just got them not too recently.....the man is a guru!
Hey dustin i freakin love your channel and videos and i was wondering if you have a tabk with shrimp and if you could make a video on it if so about the care and setup and whatnot and a cheap way to aquascape a 10gl tank
Gary is my new hero!.. Well ONE of them, lol.. You are too, Dustin! Planted tanks for life!
he's such a ninja- I just suck in the knowledge
A great Video and a knowledgeable man... love the "Gary Don't Cary"..... thats priceless.. I already use a few of his ideas in a similar fashion due to my back condition.
Check out my new: No Maintenance Aquarium Videos ruclips.net/p/PLnw3D5LLGih3ry49t00hLjsktfBV-hG6f
anyone have resources on how to create those auto siphons similar as in this vid?
With the carbon doesn’t that remove chlorine?
To avoid waterfalls pick up a basement water alarm. I use The Watchdog Water Alarm and hook the sensor right to the rim of the tank and it sounds at the perfect level.
+J. Berger This is a great call!
dude this is legendary
Love what's he saying Gary don't carry. Lol. Way cool guy smart man at his fish tanks. Cool video guy.

+Mokaphyyr he is very active in the MASI club. I think meeting him wouldn't be hard for you if you are close
i am an hour away from Kansas City.
That is a great system, however, I would recommend using globe valves versus ball valves as they have a tendency to be a pain in the ass to open and shut.
And if you're worried about the copper content, don't. I have had this tank set up for months and my amano and ghost shrimp are doing just fine.
amazing setup wow!!!!..fish tankin at its easyest..thanks for great video
+Chris Gill thanks, this video was taken after he drove me all over St. Louis to a bunch of other sweet fish rooms.... I had to share how he does it all as I think its important to have a good system
I totally agree!!!!.
Really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing!
good system! I also use the remote controls and very familiar with the waterfall effect lol
Wait how many little fish do you recommend in a 30 gallon fish tank
+Calvin Pederson hardly any to start.... it depends on how many water changes adn how often you do the work. Plant heavy, start with like 10 small fish

This guy has mad skills, truly a fish tank legend!
+hanzifaction OOOZZZZING with knowledge. He yelled at me for my lack of knowledge about fish diseases :)

why dont you water ur garden with that water :) isnt that good for the plants too?
I think it's a good fertilizer because of the fish waste.
Is it a bad thing to do a full tank water change?
Ya got Gary all excited and running out of breath
I'm in MASI with Gary. When I see him next I'm gonna ask him if he's changed his "Gary don't carry" method at all lol
I think I'll be saying "Gary don't carry" for the rest of the day.
+Eric K haha- yeah- its a killer mantra for him. I was laughing when I heard it.
love getting a look at how someone like Gary handles this stuff! maybe I missed him saying it, but how often is he doing water changes? keep bringing great stuff dustin!
You can buy a siphon from Harbor Freight for $5 and attach it to your siphon tube.
A monstrous water bill!
Nice!
He needs to set up float valves on his barrels and fills.
Sweet ! Sweet ! Sweet !
