Watching Joplin perform was a TRIP! There were singers that had that special "cry" in their voice; Billie Holiday, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, but Joplin's was as "RAW" as an open wound. Her soul was was partially exposed in every song and performance. You felt it like a tremor from an earthquake.
To this day my aunt still talks about seeing Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead on the 1970 Festival Express Tour in Winnipeg, Janis Joplin was and still is her favourite singer. It was her first date with her eventual husband, they'll have been married 48 years in June 2020.
Janis wore her soul like a blanket trying to protect her from pain, hurt, anger, & even love! This woman was one of a kind, & sadly missed by everyone who loved & understood her music ❤️ 💚 💙 She truly was a gift that was only with us for a short time, but what a glorious time it was!!! Thank you both, for such a thoughtful reaction ❤️ 💚 💙
That song was DEFINITELY recorded LIVE in the studio, most probably in one take. Her voice was very flexible. She can go softer & smooth, then "ERUPT" into a raw razor sharp raspy blues voice & then bring it down again. VERY TALENTED & her band was equally talented. That raw, powerful sound on that record would be difficult to duplicate again.
Um,watched a doc on Janis. A voice analyst recorded her voice into his voice analyst machine. Then did it again...to confirm. She sang three notes at once on the clip he had..said he'd never seen such a thing. Looked again, said, yes.. three notes there..amazing...
I was 20, living in Montreal, Canada and when I heard this song I was blown away. Noone could put a song like that out there like Janet. Her emotion was raw and her voice, one of a kind. I remember watching a documentary about her, she had returned to her hometown with a film crew. She died not that long after that trip. She was a huge recording artist by this point but she was still unnerved returning to the town where, growing up, she had been looked down on and considered trash. Do we ever totally leave the experiences of our youth behind? She died way too young. She tried to overcome her addictions to alcohol and drugs but she didn't make it. I still love listening to her songs, Summertime, Cry Baby, Me and Bobby McGee and of course Piece of My Heart.
As metal as I am, Janis melts my heart every time I hear her. She's amazing. You guys should react to ball and chain Montgomery Festival Live. That's her most remarkable performance. Mama Cass was in attendance and she was caught on camera in awe of what she was seeing
Janis Joplin was given the title "Queen of Blue Eyed Soul" That upset some folks-but you can't deny she earned it She said in interveiws she didn't know she could do that until one night at a party she tried to sing with a recording of Odetta .Wouldn't that be one kick ass surprise to find that out!
you guys you don't have to apologize for not knowing the artist I love watching you guys experience the 60s artist for the first time ... I love your honesty and I love your reaction... So you keep on keeping it alive ... I LOVE THE POWER OF YOUR FIRST RESPONSES!
I think one of the things that broke her heart that she wasn't accepted in high school the other thing is that her roommate was Kris Kristofferson she was very much in love with him and one day he decided he wasn't going to make it as a crossover being that his roots were country he told Janis one day he was going back south broke her heart and I don't think she was the same again!
Agreed! The second that he said she sounded like Amy Winehouse it reminded me that they are both members of the 27 club. Just forty years apart from each other. Such iconic artists that we lost.
My sister bought the Pearl Album when we were in High School. I was with her when she popped it on the record player for the first time and this song came on. We felt like we had hit the switch for a Thermo-Nuclear Bomb! Janice came on like an absolute explosion of sound and emotion. She was no less than a force of nature! Love your reactions!! :)
Thank you for reacting to this. Janis did have an extremely lonely life..full of pain. She found the way to put that emotion into lyrics and create magic with her voice. Her spirit cried out from deep inside and spoke to everyone. Including underdogs and outcasts who all felt lost. She died far too young but touched so many lives. Some brief examples are Melissa Etheridge..Pink..Joss Stone..Stevie Nicks...ect.
I remember my older sister coming home with the kozmic blues album trying to explain to my mother how great Janis was . My mother wasn't having any of it , being almost 50 at the time. But me , i was 12 and Janis blew me away. Been my favorite singer from that day on.
My mother wasn’t too sure about the music, but she did like Janis’ passion! I was lucky enough to see her in concert. Boston, 1970. She died soon after.
Cry baby! That song showcases her voice like no other. She was a true star. She burned very bright and burned out very young. Unlike most of us however she left a legacy of music that will be loved throughout the rest of time and THAT is amazing.
All hail the queen of hard rock, blues and soul. I love her music so much, her passion, dedication and love for the music is second to none. Great reaction yall as always.
The first album I owned was Joplin. I love that you used the descriptive word “raw”. As a teenager with really bad hair, and REALLY strict parents, Janis spoke to my very soul. Now that I’m closing in on 65 years of age, she is still my queen but she shares that title with many. Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin also hold court with Janis!!!
I attended two Janis Joplin concerts - first at Newport Folk Festival around 1967/68 when she was part of Big Brother and the Holding Company. One of the highlights of my life. They performed Piece of My Heart twice - once as an encore. Next time was a year or so later in Toronto. She was a solo act at that point and already getting a little undisciplined. It was not the same.
I love her voice. Sadly she passed away at 27 due to heroine overdose after being clean for 6 months. She did her thing and caught a lot of criticism from the more conservative people back in the day, and had love life problems.
what you do for me is make me come alive with your first response is it takes me back to the first time I heard the song watching you ... And I know many of your followers feel exactly the same way!
You picked an excellent song for your intro to Janis Joplin. I would recommend "Ball and Chain" from the Monterey Pop Festival. She really belts out the blues. BTW, her favorite liquor was "Southern Comfort".
One of my favorite Janis songs is Turtle Blues. It really showcases her voice and also shows her sense of humor a little bit. But it really is a powerful blues song.
No one could belt the blues like Janis. Saw her at Winterland, August, '67, the summer of love, with Quicksilver Messenger Service; Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis); Jefferson Airplane; and The Grateful Dead, along with a little orange wedge. Whatta show.
Greatly written and taken from when she was growing up no one really believed in her but she showed the rock and soul world that she truly belonged thank you for reviewing I cant help but belt out with her when i hear the song
She was my idol . Discovered in the .60s at the Monterey Pop festivel. She was at Woodstock and was fantastic. I have all of her albums and still blast them and sing out loud (and I’m 72). She was the queen of Rock. Died to soon. You should listen to Me and Bobby McGee and Summertime.
Listen to Maybe by her and I saw her live and she cried out her songs and still one of the best concerts I have ever been to and she died six months later. She always had her bottle of Southern Comfort on stage with her. Back in the 60's 70's she was one of the few female rock stars that could rival the male singers.
Apparently, when Janis started out, some some record labels passed on her because they thought she was black due to her voice. But damn, she is one of the best female singers ever, of any genre. You can feel her emotion through that voice in a way most singers only dream of replicating. Shame she did the idiot rockstar thing and OD'd, her career could have been totally phenomenal.
Woodstock 1969 and now there is a young girl that sounds just like her in everyway she's from Ireland and performed on AGT. They always say that there will never be another one like them but in some cases we're blessed with another chance to enjoy those incredible sounds
I was fortunate enough to catch her three times at the Family Dog dance hall in Denver back when i was but a lad. She rocked the house. If you haven't listened to her version of Summertime yet, I heartedly suggest that you do so. It is a much softer Janis, but the pain still comes through enough to make your heart cry.
Love me some classic 70's rock and roll. Check out The Doors "LA Woman", "Gloria", "Riders on the Storm" "Soul Kitchen, and "The End" Jim Morrisons voice is incredible.
My God your hair is beautiful, just lovely in general. I'm a woman but I freely say you're just adorable. And thanks for giving Janis a chance, I've always loved her.
Janis Joplin my pearl this little lady had so much tragedy in her soul that she had to release it in her voice and music there is never another one like her she stole my heart the first time I heard her sing summer time.
Liked the reaction. Love Janis... Try Try Try, Bobby McGee and Move Over are 3 of my favorites... Very Bluesy and Soulful, but with balls!!! Peace Cheers!!!
I saw Janis in person at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco in 1968-69. I was and still am awed by her voice. Haha so much soul... Bro ur girl lookin at you like ur her next lunch snack... :) Beautiful lady, love your hair. Janis Joplin in her short life had a heart full of pain and in her music she wore it on her sleeve and let it out raw and unfiltered. Awesome live performances also.
My favorite song by the one and only Janis Joplin!
She sang with so much emotion! Her voice blows me away every time I hear her.
she's' been blowing me through the nearest wall since 1967..
She's an icon. We listened to her ALOT in Vietnam. Our mortar platoon would shoot fire missions and play Piece of my Heart. Strange day's indeed
Get some mortars bring the rain.
My big brother was in Vietnam, he made me cassette tapes of music and sent them to me. That’s how I fell in love with Sly and the Family Stone!
Thank you. For sharing and for being there. ❣
Welcome home!!
WE LIVED HARD IN THE 60'S AND 70'S NO WONDER MOST OF US ARE GONE NOW. BUT LIFE WAS ONE BIG PARTY AND HOW I MISS IT SO. LOVED THE FREEDOM.
Janis Joplin - still making people smile some 40+ years after her passing.
Hate to brake hearts or make people feel old but it's 50+ years now
So true 😁😁😁
and cry
Sure is .... 52 years actually

ᕼᑌᗰᗩᑎ ᖴᗴᒪᒪᗩ She’s a very fortunate woman to see so many great acts on that tour
There is a Festival Express movie
That's fkn badass 💯🤘
Oh my goodness!!! Has she seen the documentary, "Festival Express" featuring all of them? The Dead. Janis Joplin. The Band. ....Janis and Ian?

Thank you for sharing, you guys rocked it.
One of the best voices of all time

Hahahaha. Watching you two jam out to that was the best part of my day. Janis rules.

Sadly, she was a member of the "27" club- Drugs and alcohol did her in. She was a tremendous talent gone too soon.
She and others were meteors - they burned blindingly bright, flashed across the sky, exploded, and were gone, all too soon !
So was Amy Winehouse.
Agreed! The second that he said she sounded like Amy Winehouse it reminded me that they are both members of the 27 club. Just forty years apart from each other. Such iconic artists that we lost.
one of the most raw vocals of any woman. super powerful
