@@harmonchandler6164 , I wired in a on/off switch next to the sensor. When we know for a fact it will be a methane evening. We turn off that switch for the night. and then back on in the morning. ** note that we have a secondary carbon monoxide sensor that is always operational. ** adding a switch is likely a safety hazard and we accept that risk each time we use it, and we sleep through the night every time. LOL! Flatulence! My unit just went off and on the unit itself said "red/red/green/green" means end of life. That's what mine did. It also says reset will last 3 days and then happen again. After 30 days it will be on continually. I guess I need to take it in and have it replaced lest it activate and I can't shut it off. btw my co unit is 5 yrs old.
What I’m still baffled about is the fact the alarm goes off between 2am and 8am randomly. So I would assume your up at that time using the products that are making it go off ?? Just a thought

It’s absolutely high humidity in our situation. I hate this! We clipped the wires (it’s our 2nd alarm) & so we are buying a google nest protect. I’d say methane too but this thing would go off in the winter when we are not doing such things but our temp gauge says it’s high humidity. It also would go off when we are driving on long hauls when the temps are all out of wack inside. Thank you for the experiment. Just what I expected. I am tired of living full time in this thing and getting woken up at 3-4am.
That is interesting how you have discovered humidity as an issue. It is easy to clip the wires, however I can count to 2 times in our camper where the propane stove got turned on without being lit and that alarm has prevented a big disaster. Being woken up is no fun, i agree with you. I have contacted a couple alarm manufacturers and they have no interest in providing answers. Possibly try another brand of alarm ?
@@RVKevin Yes, I agree with you that it is very serious to clip the wires. We ordered a Google Nest Protect battery operated CO/Smoke combo detector from Amazon and have seen great reviews for it. It’ll also alert our phones if there’s an issue when we are not home. $120. Done. Or at least I’m wrong that this is the issue. There are different types of monitors out there with their innards all made differently whether chemically or of other means. I think the ones coming stock in the RV are just not efficient. So we are trying this one out. I can report back if you like to see if I’m happy with it?
Ok so far so good! We’ve had this Google Nest Protect and it keeps a daily history of self checks (battery check and CO issues, if any). It’s been nice to sleep at night… I say for those still figuring things out to make the purchase!
Unit is on it’s 4th summer, never had a problem. First trip this season no issues. Parked in driveway at home reloading for next trip. Running off batteries while boss was cleaning and putting laundry away, no problem. Couple days go by batteries now discharged and CO detector is blaring. Tried reset, silence till I got out and locked up………warning again. Due for inspection today. Dealer will check. My theory is if there is no power to unit it will alert. Will see what happens when I hook up truck to tow.
I have a switch in mine now, but i have experienced what you described, for a test i would remove power again for 30 seconds and reconnect. It may be that you are at the 5 year life expectancy for the device. Hope that helps 👍
Thanks for the info. About a year ago my alarm went off and had a few sleepless nights. I bought a new 120v battery and safe t alarm. Went the whole year with no alarm. I'm alarming AGAIN. I live in the campgrounds as a camp host. I have access to a bath house so i don't use the bathroom in my TT. I also don't do any cooking which requires propane so i allowed a friend to use my propane about a month ago. Baffled. Guess i need to purchase a new alarm. I've read in another post that in fine print, that some may only last a year so i guess the four year warranty is a bummer. Happy camping.
I am not sure why my original reply did not show up so I will do it now :) @Kar Lar, if you feel like investigating, you could purchase a second detector and power it on at the same time as the first detector. If they both sound the alarm at night or other times, you will know that you DO have something triggering the alarm in your TT and not a bad sensor. From my experience, it has absolutely been ME and/or the dog setting off our TT alarm. MY wife would never do that she says ;) I purchased a Home depot CO detector for our TT for the times I turn off our dual mode detector this way i can be sure that we wont die in our sleep from CO. I have never had a problem until today.I decided to completely flush my hot water tank & filled it with vinegar.The alarm started going off & would not stop.Opened all the windows & put the ceiling fan on & it stopped.I had to completely flush the tank again to get it to stop because all I can figure is vinegar sets it off.Maybe because I turned the hot water on & the heating of the vinegar created a fume?Not sure but I think my sensor does not like vinegar.
Dave, you are right, it is the craziest thing about those sensors. The bad thing is it can be the "boy crying wolf" when the alarm goes off to many times. We recently had an actual Gas leak and we kept hitting reset until we indeed found a problem. IT is a pain but, I say ALWAYS keep those alarms active for an early warning to help protect family and loved ones. Nice find Dave and thank you for sharing the story. Kevin

So far I have not come across a company that is willing to stand behind any level of accuracy. Pretty sad since this is a very common problem that many including me face.
My detector alarms if is blocked. Setting a bag in front of it for example(or covering with a rag) it will sound alarm informing it is blocked it appears as it has done...
If your alarm is older than the 5 year lifespan, you may need to have it replaced. I have to say, the alarm is most annoying when they false alarm in the middle of the night

Had to disconnect for now, pulling fuse hot water heater switch was on same circuit..water heater kept my water lines warm also, it's getting cold..but yes detector indicated end of life with continuos beeps/lights..new replacement a week away...the one I removed was dated 2015.. thanks.
OMG I’m still, laughing. Farts? That’s methane. Hey it’s explosive so I guess the dang thing is doing what you want. But I have a problem on one right now, and I think it has just plain failed... it won’t reset! too. The beep is consistent every 30 seconds and a trouble shooting guide says its “malfunctioning”. It’s not the EOL....man I’ve learned so much about these things, so I think I know what to do. but your video was the funniest.....a fart...🤓... good job. Great question, I have not been able to do extensive testing for additional conditions that create more false alarms. I hope to have a follow up video in the near future with added testing.
you answered my question my dog is rather large it is a Labrador and she lays within 5 feet of the alarm and she farts constantly and that doesn't include my wife and I we sleep within 4 feet of the alarm.

Mine is beeping I’m just the winterizing my trailer and my propane isn’t even on as soon as I plug the trailer in that starts beeping but nothing else is on all I’ve done is drained my antifreeze But I thought it had something to do with my battery because my battery is not connected
unplug your power and then power it back on.. I think, but am not sure that it is a reset alarm. I suppose you could hit the reset button instead on the alarm and that might get you on track again.
High humidity and low battery ...your big battery are reasons for this idiotic piece of legislative crap to set off! The SafeT alert company gouges us and 50 % are not functionally efficient! My tiny RV fridge has the back up Propane supply in case of battery issues in the RV...which, always keep distilled water in your RV! Fill those cells every few months or void the warranty on your battery! So, right now, I have my detector not hooked up because it would not stop, at 3 am I had to literally cut the wires..and it blew one of the fuses doing that bit that’s fixable! I’m in a RV Park, and people were bitching the next day how nobody can sleep thru the night with the alarms ! So, I’m going to get one of the kiddie gas CO Alarms which are 9 volt or plug in...and portable! I won’t waste another $100 to that SafeT Alert Company when their warranty does NO good... Your Tests Show the ridiculously random things that set it off, but just to shower or damp mop the floor with water meant it was sensing humidity. I put my dogs bowl of water near it...1 your later, it went off and wouldn’t reset. I got my blow dryer and it finally stopped! I just have to say, it could give someone a heart attack some day. I won’t take my grandkids overnight because it’s too scary to awaken to that level of noise, which is in itself a serious safety concern! So until I get out of my county to the nearest Lowe’s or big hardware store, i won’t use my heater or put my refrigerator on Propane or “auto” settings. I do not hook up to the parks gas supply, I still use my small tanks...and that way I know how much I’m using BEFORE the bill arrives! PGE has become outrageously high in just a few short months, and it’s all political! $30 /month is now suddenly $130 ...with no air conditioning used. My rent is $750 ..but nearly 900 per month in a 17foot toy hauler! I can’t have it on my own property due to county Code Enforcement ! I can no longer rebuild on my property because my rebuild money all has been spent on renting a space with neighbors in my business and an oak tree that is destroying my trailer! Th acorns have taken out my last 2 vent replacements and this time my fan unit for the shower toilet. Even my car was damaged by acorns ,.now it’s weeping like it’s a willow tree! My camper is a 2010 and has the same detector as you. Rings anywheres from 2-7 in the morning. Did you ever figure out why it was doing it? Or did you replace it with a different detector. Makes a guy have trouble sleeping worrying about that
Linden, thanks for watching. For my situation i wired in an on/off switch for when we have kids and dogs and a gassy night in the camper. And YES, indeed methane does set the sensor off. I have proved it true on many occassions. Perhaps moving the sensor to a new location will help. I feel your pain, i lived that nightmare you describe. Open windows and other ventilation ideas will help. I am not kidding, even try an anti gas pill before bed to prove or disprove the idea. It will get you closer to the answer. I hope these tips help.
@@RVKevin so you kept the same sensor? My sensor is 11 years old so its probably time to replace it im thinking. I want to get another detector in there just to see if that one’s faulty or not. There a $200 for a new one same kind. Im thinking i might just buy a battery operated CO detector. There only about $40 instead
@@lindengauthier4407 , 100% get a new sensor. The life span is only 5 to 6 years. It never hurts to get an additional CO detector. GAS detector is too important in an RV do not skip that. I highly suggest replacing old unit with a new unit with no need for battery replacement later. There is a reason that EVERY rv has a GAS detector, i would look at it as a worth while safety item. No kidding, I was surprised to discover that methane problem 😉. Our dog now must sleep far away from that detector. No testing in the bathroom yet, that could be a future test. thanks for the idea.
My detector is in the living room. The bathroom is between the living room and the bedroom. When wife uses hair spray, it goes off every time. This morning, it went off about 0600. Opened doors, it stopped. Closed up and turned furnace on. It went off again, it appears to be associated with furnace. Side note; unit is 20 years old, and I just discovered that they are supposed to be replaced every 5-7 years. Bubble checked connections at water heater, fridge, and furnace with no evidence of leaks at the fittings.
20 years is a long time Oscar, totally time to replace that bad boy. Yep tooI have found ask the stuff that sets off the alarm . We had fun testing too. Thank you for watching and sharing what you found.
@@RVKevin New propane detector with CO detector should be on my porch by Monday. Hopefully that solves the issue. Three problems this morning and that was only one of them. Water heater has been intermittent. Show up at camper, fire it up, good for 3 days or so, then this morning only warm water. Cycle the switch and we are good in 10minutes. Fridge has an E-1 code. Usually it happens when the trailer is cold soaked. Arrive in North Dakota (in the past) for a pheasant hunt. E-1 code. Warm up trailer, and cycle the power switch, and the fridge will run fine. Not this morning. Fridge has been on for three days and this morning it was showing an E-1 code. After multiple resets, gave up, turned off gas and left to have Turkey Day with family. Tonight might be easy, OR it may be a royal pain. Temps are supposed to drop into the 30’s so I need a furnace and don’t need beeping.
This repair took allot of detective work and some phone calls to the manufacturer,
problem has been solved. sleeping better at night now :)

What about a handheld sensor and keep it in the bedroom and disconnect the faulty unit.
Whatever you do, make sure you have a sensor that can alert you. Nothing wrong with more than one for sure.

Anything in a aerosol can will set them off because of the propellants used. The propellants in the lysol or febreese in this case are flammable.

I did some more research and saw, if the battery drops voltage it can cause it to beep!! I connected my charger/tender and it has not beeped since!!

No kidding, I was surprised to discover that methane problem 😉. Our dog now must sleep far away from that detector.

I have a gas and carbon monoxide alarm and each time i fart it goes off almost scaring me to the toilet

My detector is in the living room. The bathroom is between the living room and the bedroom. When wife uses hair spray, it goes off every time.
This morning, it went off about 0600. Opened doors, it stopped. Closed up and turned furnace on. It went off again, it appears to be associated with furnace. Side note; unit is 20 years old, and I just discovered that they are supposed to be replaced every 5-7 years. Bubble checked connections at water heater, fridge, and furnace with no evidence of leaks at the fittings.
20 years is a long time Oscar, totally time to replace that bad boy.

Three problems this morning and that was only one of them. Water heater has been intermittent. Show up at camper, fire it up, good for 3 days or so, then this morning only warm water. Cycle the switch and we are good in 10minutes.
Fridge has an E-1 code. Usually it happens when the trailer is cold soaked. Arrive in North Dakota (in the past) for a pheasant hunt. E-1 code. Warm up trailer, and cycle the power switch, and the fridge will run fine. Not this morning. Fridge has been on for three days and this morning it was showing an E-1 code. After multiple resets, gave up, turned off gas and left to have Turkey Day with family. Tonight might be easy, OR it may be a royal pain. Temps are supposed to drop into the 30’s so I need a furnace and don’t need beeping.
